Abstract

Plectranthus amboinicus or bangun-bangun is a traditional medicinal plant used for postpartum recovery in North Sumatera. The aims ofthis study were to detemine antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of leaves Plectranthus amboinicus. The leaves of Plectranthus amboinicuswere extracted with using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol, successively. The extracts were tested to antioxidant activity assay usingDPPH with two fold dillution tehnique and ascorbic acid was used as standard. The antimicrobial activity was conducted using agar diffusionmethod against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The Amoxsan used as positive control for antibacterialassay, while ketokenazole was for antifungi test. Extracted solvents were used as negative control. The n-hexane and ethyl acetate extractsdid not show any antioxidant activity. While, the IC 50 free radical DPPH of methanol extract was 90.96 mg/mL and ascorbic acid was 58.792mg/mL. The antimicrobial activity of n-hexane and Amoxsan againts Escherichia coli were 11.95 and 7.53 mm. The inhibition zone againtsStaphylococcus aureus were 11.30 and 11.57 mm. The antimicrobial activity of ethyl acetate and Amoxsan againts Escherichia coli were12.29 and 7.71 mm. The inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus were 13.72 and 11.57 mm. The n-hexane and ethyl acetate did notshow any antifungi activity towards Candida albicans. The methanol extract did not show any inhibition zone againts the selectedpathogens.

Abstract

Dahlia variabilis is one of plant that commonly growing in highland hills in Indonesia. The preliminary screening on secondary metabolitesshowed that the presence of flavonoids, phenolics and saponin in methanol extract of this plant’s tuber. Its methanol extract was subjectedto the evaluation of non-specific parameter of extract standardization as well as antimicrobial assay using disc diffusion method againstEscherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The result revealed that the methanol extract contained 25.48±1.63% of water content,4.06±0.15% of ash content, and there was no heavy metal contamination detected. Antibacterial activity assay of three differenceconcentrations of the extract (10; 8 and 2%) demonstrated that extract with 10% of concentration gave the strongest activity against twotested bacterium with diameter of inhibition of 8.67±0.57 and 8.33±0.28 mm against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively.

Abstract

A compound has been isolated from n-hexane extract of fruits skin of palm (Elais guinensis Jacq). Separation of 2 g extract was conductedby using column chromatography with step gradient polarity method and using n-heksana, ethyl acetate and methanol as the eluents. Thisisolated compound is yellow fatty (573.9 mg, 28.96%) which melted at 26-28oC. Based on NMR spectroscopic datas, including, 1H-NMR, 1H-1H COSY, 13C-NMR and DEPT, the compound was suggested as oleic acid.

Abstract

A research on effect of ethanol extract of tampa badak (Voacanga foetida) to renal function of male white mice at doses 100, 200 and300mg/kgBW of weight has been studied. The employed parameter was measuring creatinine clearence and the kidney weight ratio of malewhite mice in the 61st day. In this study, four group of male white mice, each of which consisted of five mice, were utilized. Three groups weregiven suspension of ethanol extract of tampa badak and the other group as a control was simply given suspension of NaCMC 1% orally. Themeasurement method used was the method of chemical reaction with using reagent Diasys and by using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry(Microlab 200) at wavelength 505 nm. The result showed that application of ethanol extract of tampa badak did not give significant effect(p>0,05) to 24 hour urine volume, urinary creatinie quantity, serum creatinine, cretinine clearance as well as kidney weight ratio of malewhite mice.

Abstract

The clinical study on effect of supplement psidii folium and red fermented rice extract in management for increasing thrombocytes in patientsufferings Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) at RSUP. DR. M. Djamil Padang has been done. The research was conducted using quasiexperimental method with pre and post test design. The subjects were 20 patients and willing to give informed consent was included. Patientswith hematology abnormality, heart and lung disease, salicylic acid treatment, severe hemorrhagic condition, and descent consciousness wereexcluded. An amount of thrombocytes were measured every 12 hours in a day. Furthermore, the changes of thrombocytes count from startto end were analyzed using t-independent-test (to analyze the difference of changes between groups) and chi-square (to analyze the responserate between groups). In this trial of 20 subjects, the thrombocytes count of the test group was significantly increased compared with thecontrol group p<0.05 (p=0,0120) and the increasing of thrombocytes response rate in the test group was significantly different from thatin the control group p<0.01 (p=0,0034). As conclusion, the results of this trial have proven that psidii folium and red fermented rice extractcould treat thrombocytopenia.

Abstract

The formulas of antiacne gel preparation of ethyl acetate extract of gambir have been formulated by using carbopol 940P as its bases. In thisstudy, five difference gel formulas F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5, were prepared with 0.5; 1; 2; 4 and 6% of concentration of extract, respectively. The result showed that organoleptic of al formulas was found unstable, while the appearance of gel F1 and F2 were homogeneous and stableat room temperature as well as cooling process. In addition, all formulas exhibited stable value in pH evaluation and did not irritate the skin.

Abstract

Glutinous rice contains 99.7% of amilopectin. The amilopectin does not swell in cold water and it could retard the desintegration anddissolution of drug. Physical modification of glutinous rice by pregelatization can enhance the swelling power of starch in cold water. In thisstudy, glutinous rice used as sample was collected from three difference places which are kecamatan Air Tiris, Rumbio Jaya dan Salo kabupatenKampar, Riau province. Sample was subjected to pregelatization process manually as well as by using Spray Dryer. The result showed thatpregelatized glutinous rice starch gave the higher swelling power than glutinous rice. Glutinous rice from Rumbio Jaya showed the highestswelling power of 343.87%. This value indicated that it could be potential candidate as sustained release agent.
