Abstract

The complexity of connubiality in the two plays can be interwoven by many factors. The discussion of the connubiality or marriage in the plays may not be easily separated from issues of racial sentiments and prejudice since both plays are not free from such issues. Therefore, this article highlights the complexity within three aspects: the purpose or the motive of the marriage, the matrimonial ceremony, and the racial prejudice overshadowing it. Making use of narrative study and documentary analysis, this article closely studies the existence and inter-relation of those three aspects in order to better comprehend the plays. The results show that the aspects of motive and as well as racial sentiments and prejudice are present in both plays while aspect of matrimonial ceremony is not clearly present. It is because of this amalgam that makes the plays more aesthetic from narrative standpoint.

Abstract

Aktan is someone or something that is perfecting or undergoing action. Yabu no Naka's short story research using the Greimas act scheme aims to analyze the actions of characters in short stories using Greimas act theory. Acting scheme includes seven function actions, namely as sender, receiver, object, subject, opposant and helper. While the Greimas functional model consists of three stages: the initial situation, the transformation stage and the final situation. The seven parts of the story in Yabu no Naka's short story are discussed with an approach using a qualitative descriptive paradigm based on the act scheme theory and functional model. The results of the study show that in the seven parts of the short stories analyzed, there are 8 act schemes and 8 functional model tables. There is 1 act scheme that show zeroization (some function roles are zero or none) and 5 functional tables that show zeroization (there are zero or zero stages). Meanwhile, 7 act schemes and 3 other functional tables have a complete or perfect role.

Abstract

Literary works cannot be separated from culture. As Abrams(1998) stated that literary works represent the universe. The relation between literary works and universe is never pure. Nothing is ever pure, being at one with itself, and paradigms are no exception. Between the literary studies paradigm as defined and the cultural studies paradigm advocated there are a range of empirical positions. The object of literary study presumes an equation between the aesthetic and the experiential in which the complexity of life is synthesized with the unity of art. Novel as one of the types of literary work serves the variation and interesting development of topics. A novel may be the portrayal of human reality. Its subject matter may be taken from patterns of life, or set in an imaginative time or place. (Nurgiyantoro, 2002:24). A character builds or appears as the implementation of real world and good author is someone who can bring the character outside the literary works. Vampire myths, legends and folklore have existed throughout the ages all over the world. They have appeared in some shape or form in almost every culture and society. Vampire myths are as old as human civilization. The myths change from culture to culture and from geographical area. The myths have evolved along with the times. Literary works make the character famous and mingle with the culture. The aims of this research are to find out the image of vampire in modern culture. Furthermore the research is to find out the changing image of vampire in literary works. The data of this research are Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula as the representation of vampire character in the early ages and Stephanie Meyer’s novel Twilight as the representation of vampire character in modern culture. Thecharacters in both novels are analyzed by using structural approach which focus on characterization and setting, and mythopoeic approach. The result of this research showed that there is a difference in vampire depiction in both novels. The difference depiction of vampires in the both novel is a result of cultural difference which related to society, psychology, historical background of the novel and build new image of vampire in modern literary works. Keywords: character, changing image, modern literary works, setting, vampire

Abstract

This paper aims at describing students’ difficulties in spoken utterances. To achieve the objective, the research site is some schools in Yogyakarta Special Province, both public and private schools. The reason to choose is first, the schools provide English from the very beginning level, that is the first grade of elementary school, second, the teachers are from English educational background and third, the schools get A for the accreditation. Observation and interview techniques are employed to collect data. The results reveal that English teachers tend to teach form and vocabularies. As a result, a complete text in a form of dialogue or a descriptive text is still difficult to reach. The students perform uncontextual and uncomplete text. The text is not a monologue or dialogue, a short functional text, or a descriptive text as suggested by the curriculum. Most utterances are in a form of words, phrases and sentences; the text produced is sentence copying from textbooks or from teachers. The teaching learning process then is divided into three steps of teaching, namely pre-teaching, while-teaching, and post-teaching. Of the three steps of teaching, English teachers tend to be teachers centered teaching and the focus is still on vocabularies and English rules. They teach about the language. They speak more in Bahasa Indonesia starting from pre-teaching up to post teaching. The tasks given are on vocabulary and forms. As the result of teachers’ teaching then it affects on students’ performance. The students are in doubt even do not know how to communicate or perform a simple dialogue among friends in English. It contrasts to the aim of English learning for children, that is performative level. They actually should be trained more on formulaic expressions rather than on rules. In brief, to be an English teacher for elementary level needs to have good ability in English classroom instructions, be a grammar sensitive teacher and be a creative teacher in conducting teaching learning process.

Abstract

Writing is one of the language skills which shows how a second language learner performs his or her verbal competence. Writing performance of an English learner can reflect the learner’s knowledge in English language patterns through the written discourse they present. However, due to several factors, writing in the target language is not always easy for a second language learner. Thus, there are some Indonesian students fail to perform their best in writing though those who can not achieve good mark in writing are not always the left behind students.Second language learner’s verbal performance is determined by three internal factors namely filter, organizer, and monitor (Dulay, Burt, Krashen, 1982:45-60). The first factor is a subconscious process  related to learner’s affective state which includes anxiety. This research starts from a hypothesis that students’ high level of anxiety is followed by lower students’ achievement. Thus, this research is aimed to prove the hypothesis as well as seeing if there is a strong correlation between the students’  level of anxiety and their achievement. The data were gained through document, questionnaire using Westide Test Anxiety Scale and Focus Group Discussion. The results of the study indicate a weak negative correlation between students’ level of anxiety and students’ achievement. From the result of the Focus Group Discussion,  it was found that the sources of students’ anxiety were varied.

Abstract

This spoken discourse analysis adopted the model of casual conversation analysis as suggested by Eggins and Slade (1997).The corpus of data of this study was a taped English casualconversation between a non-native speaker (NNS) and a native speaker (NS). The transcribed conversation was analyzed to know the mood patterns and the speech function patterns of the interactants. The mood patterns were studied from the types of clause structures chosen by the interactants, while the speech function patterns were studied through the choice of speech functions when the interactants acted on each other. The interpersonal relationships between the interactants wereinterpreted from the synoptic quantification of the mood and speech function patterns. The study revealed that NNS was the dominant interactant and played his role as initiator, while NS is the marginal interactant and played her role as supporter; the conversation was the one of information negotiation rather than goods and services negotiation signed by the dominant production of declaratives by both NNS and NS; and NNS favoured on negotiating opinion information, while NS prefered factual information negotiation.. It is suggested that casual conversation needs to be considered in designing syllabus to complement the current practices of conversation which focus on pragmatic conversation; authentic text, such as casual conversation, needs to be used in language classroom to avoid genre shock in students’ daily activities; and speech functions and their lexicogrammatical realizations need to be introduced to students to enrich them with possible moves in sustaining a conversation.Key words: English interaction , interpersonal meaning, representation

Abstract

The term tense in Japanese is called by jisei. According to Nitta Yoshio (1976), tense or jisei is a grammatical framework that is related to an action happened, on going, and will take place in some framework of time. Meanwhile, the term aspect that is called by so or asupekuto, is a linguistic framework to elucidate an action processed within point in time. Aspect and tense marker are commonly similar to some other languages, for instance: a morphological change in its formation or the emergence of some other words as a lexical marker. This study discusses about the appearance of aspect and tense in Tokyo Fuusen Nikki (Note of a Tokyo Sailing Boat) written by Midori Nakano in 1993.
