Abstract

This study is a linguistic analysis on literary works, especially of poem. It is mainly based on the study of cohesion given by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The study intends to describe how the cohesion works in two poems ‘Marks’ and ‘the way and the way things are’ written respectively by Linda Pastan and Nila Northsun. This is in line with Halliday and Hasan (1974:328) that a “linguistic study of literature is not an interpretation of what the text means; it is an explanation of why and how it means what it does.” The cohesive devices realized in the poems were identified and the cohesive ties among them were, then, described to show why and how the two poems mean what they do.Keywords: poem, cohesion, cohesive devices, and cohesive ties

With the use of metaphor analysis "Knowles and Moon" (2006), this research examines twelve metaphors from the data source entitled Kokoro no Tomo. It can be concluded that metaphor is used by writer to describe his’ real meaning’ that can not be described with ‘ordinary’ words.

Abstract

When learning a foreign language or second languagelearning (L2) for native language users (L1), there are somedifferences which learners cannot avoid. Several factors underlie thatproblem. Chinese learners in Indonesia also experience the problem.Pinyin spelling system is quite different from Indonesian spellingsystem and it causes some distinctions in L1 and L2. ContrastiveAnalysis approach (henceforth anakon) can be the answer to solve theproblem. A subordinate study by Carl James discusses two maindifficulties in phonology and structure. Anakon can be understood byoutlining the meaning of L1 and L2 words. By using anakon, thedifferences between L1 and L2 will get clearer.

Abstract

The development of pragmatic linguistics cannot be separated from the development of analytic philosophical tradition which focuses on ordinary language. Analytic philosophy falls into three main branches: logical atomism, logical positivism, and ordinary language philosophy. According to the philosophy of logical atomism, a reality is expressed in language propositions, not ideas. A proposition is everything which can be verified to be true or false. Meanwhile, logical positivism philosophy is characterised by positive evaluation of knowledge and scientific method. Unlike logical atomism and logical positivism, ordinary language philosophy does not base on language logic, but on the ordinary language which human beings use in their daily activities. In thisordinary language philosophy, language is studied from both structural and functional aspects. Language is studied from its fundamental function in daily life. This idea of language philosophy inspired the development of pragmatic linguistics. Some language philosophers, such as Austin, Searl, and Grice, initiated the development of pragmatic linguistics through their ideas on speechacts and cooperative principle. Keywords: logical atomism, logical positivism, ordinary language philosophy, pragmatic linguistics
