Abstract

The term Autism has become popular in Indonesia since the end of 90’s. The suspicious and peculiar cause of autism is stil debatable until today. There are experts who suspect mercury substance of deep water fish to be the main cause of it and some others claim that it is caused by a particular vaccination before a child gets two years old. There are two common symptoms of a child labeled autistic; speech delay and mental retardation. This article describes the ways of an autistic child acquiring his first language in addition to the available theories of language acquisition for children and it also shares the writer’s personal experiences living together with an autistic child of his own.Keywords: Autism, speech delay, mental retardation, languageacquisition, speech therapy

Abstract

This writing analyzes the issue of selecting politeness variation in Japanese apology. This research is focused on the Japanese socio-cultural factors which arises the use of politeness variation in Japanese apology. The source of data was taken from the transcript of a drama serial entitled Oshin which was produced by Sugako Hashida. The data are 6 forms of apologizing, they are sumimasen, sumanee, gomenshitekureno, mooshiwakearimasendeshita, mooshiwakegozaimasen, and owabiitashimasu. Apalogizing is carried out as to maintain a harmonious social interaction. Socio-cultural factors are social status difference factor (vertical), social distance factor (horizontal), formality, and value from mistakes which are produced by the user. The use of politeness variation is aimed to smooth and minimize the speakers’ mistakes.

Abstract

‘Jalur Gula’ culture is one of tourist destinations in Semarang city. The existence of ‘Jalur Gula,’ culture cannot be separated from the role of a person named Oei Tiong Ham, the king of sugar in Southeast Asia. This culture is located in the old area of Semarang city. This area used to be the center of trade and industry during the Dutch colonialization.This culture is expected to give the real contribution to the tourism sector in Semarang city. This study is aimed at describing the potency of ‘Jalur Gula’ cultural tourism in increasing the hotel occupation in Semarang city. To get this data, observation and library research were conducted. The result showed that ‘Jalur Gula’ culture has the high potency in increasing the hotel occupation in Semarang city. Since Semarang city is a part of sugar trade in the world, there are many tourists visiting Semarang city. When the number of tourist increases, it will also increase the hotel occupation in Semarang city. Keywords: cultural tourism, king of sugar, ‘Jalur Gula’ culture, hotel occupation in  Semarang.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss “Links in Journey of Idea to Productin Creative Writing”. The study explores influencing elements in creative writing process up to be a literary work as a masterpiece. Methods of the study consist of qualitative design in explaining discourse, library research in collecting data, and causal approach in answering the problem statement that is how and why creative writing can promote local culture. Units of analysis cover the factors in the elements building the literary work as the product of creative writing conducted by author. Writing is a form of personal freedom. It frees the author from the mass identity he or she seesall around. In the end, he or she will write not to be outlaw hero of some under culture but mainly to save him or herself, to survive as individuals. Furthermore, creative writing is anything in which the purpose is to express thoughts, feelings and emotions rather than to simply convey information.Keywords: journey, creative writing, literary work, author

Abstract

The number of Indonesian workers who work abroad especially to Japan has given different working experience. These former apprentices intensively interacted with the Japanese who are working in Japanese firms so that they had little effect on the apprentices’ character. This study aims to describe how the work experience of the ex-apprentice in Japan has an effect on working ethic with the concepts of working culture in Japan especially ganbaru concept, after they returned to Indonesia. The approach used in this study is qualitative ethnographic. The results show that the experience of working with Japanese people influences the ex-apprentices’ character. The most influential concept is the culture of ganbaru (unyielding). The effect is seen in the time the ex-apprentices starts a business, they faced business constraints and they find a solution to be able to expand its business.   Keywords: former apprentices, ganbaru character, influence, working ethic

Abstract

This article discusses 'The North Ship', a poem written by Philip Larkin. The poem was examined by using stylistic approachproposed by Leech and Short. Stylistic study is a field of empiricalenquiry in that linguistic theories are used to analyze literary text(Leech and Short; 1994 and 1996). Considering that stylistics deals with a very broad area, this study is limited in two aspects namely foregrounding and cohesion. The whole lines of 'The North Ship' were examined line by line to find out foregrounding techniques used by its writer. Any linguistic features such as diction were classified. Likewise, the poetic features of the poem were identified. Both linguistic and poetic features were then analyzed and described based on the given theory. In addition, the cohesive devices in the poem were identified and traced. They were described one by one based on the classification given in Halliday and Hasan Model. The ties among them were described and showed in the cohesive links and chains Based on the analysis of foregrounding and cohesion, the interpretation of the poem was finally made. The findings showed that foregrounding and cohesion are very supportive each other in creating meaning of the examined poem.Keywords: cohesive devices, deviation, foregrounding, , parallelism, stylistics,

Abstract

Gender does not refer to biogical facts of a man or a woman, but it is rather considered as a social construction toward the roles of a man or a woman. Patriarchal world makes men dominate in public field, while women are seen asdomestic beings. Gender inequality is an ordinal hierarchy between men and women in material resources, power, and status. In discussing this matter, libertarian radical feminism can be used because it discusses gender as the main cause of oppression toward women. One of the TV series discussing the theme is Sex and the City, the First Season. The show follows the lives of a group of four women who are single, successful, and independent. This series changes the view of seeing women’s gender roles as the oppressed side, particularly in sexuality. The power and money that they get make them can treat men as a sexual object.

Abstract

Character’s emotions in a romantic novel, the ones represented either through its characters, can be used to analyze the psychological conditions of its characters. The personality condition of a character can be analyzed deeply using the theory of personality system and ego defense mechanism. It also can be applied to Putri Lanhsiang, one of the characters in Putri Bunga Meihua. Her personality system and effort to defend her ego to overcome her anxiety and traumatic experience can be seen clearly using psychoanalytic theory. Several ways such as repression, sublimation, fixation, and self-defense are cathexis used to defend her ego.Keywords: Ego defense mechanism, trauma, personality, fixation,sublimation

Abstract

The relationship between literature and psychology commonly derives from psychological dimension in literary works and the application of psychology theory in interpreting literary texts. This essay discusses a psychological study in Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory. Rebecca is a very psychological novel, since a lot of psychological phenomena emerges from the beginning to the end of the novel. Psychological phenomena found in the novel among other things are dream analysis, Narcissist complex, Cinderella complex, Electra complex, impulsive id, ego, and super ego, cathexis, as well as various types of ego defense mechanism. Each character within the novel such as Rebecca, Maxim de Winter, Maxim’s second wife, and Mrs. Danvers, have his or her psychological characteristics, reaction, and problem. Dream in the beginning and the burning Manderley house at the end of the story are symbol of the ultimate psychological phenomena in the novel Rebecca.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the entrepreneurial potential that can be attempted in Translation learning and propose a learning model that allows students to achieve professional translator competencies. The results of the discussion show that Translation learning has great potential in the development of entrepreneurship, such as the potential of the profession as a translator, interpreter, and film translator, in terms of financially this profession is also quite promising. The learning model proposed in this study is an internship learning model.
