Abstract

It is believed that the students’ habit of listening correlate with their listening proficiency. This study tried to investigate this view. The learners’ ability in listening to the spoken language is indicated by their ability to give response or comment to the spoken language that they have listened. The research was conducted in EFL class setting. Thirty five of the seventy nine students were taken as the subjects of the research. The research subjects were the fourth students of English Department Dian Nuswantoro University taking “Listening Comprehension IV”. They were asked to answer the questionnaires to measure their habit. The student’s scores in “Listening Comprehension IV” weredocumented and used as their proficiency level. The two variables were then analyzed by using Pearson Product-Moment test. The output of the statistical analysis showed that the two variables have significant correlation indicated by 70.4% coefficient correlation and the level of significance was 0.0. The results of the statistical analysis indicate that the better the students’ habit of listening the better their listening proficiency. Based on the findings, the teacher of English is recommended to shape the students’ habit by giving much task in order to expose them toEnglish especially spoken English.Key words: Listening, Pearson Product-Moment test, Spoken English, Students’ability,

Abstract

Hedges are linguistic resources which convey the fundamental characteristics of science of doubt and certainty. Hedges are mostly verbal and adverbial expression such as could, perhaps, may, suggest which deal with degrees of probability. Hedges can be considered as the interactive elements which serve as a bridge between the propositional information in the text and the writer’s factual interpretation. Based on Meyer in Miller (1994: 109-110) hedges are expressed in the following strategic stereotypes: modal auxiliary verbs; modal lexical verbs of varying degree of illocutionary force; adjectival, adverbial, and nominal modal phrases; approximators of degree, quantity, frequency, and time; introductory phrases; if clauses; and compound hedges. While the reasons why people use hedges are minimizing the “thread-to-face”, being a way of being more precise in reporting results, being positive or negative politeness strategies, and conforming to an established writing style. Keywords: hedges, taxonomy, style of writing, politeness strategies, strategic stereotypes.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to see the morals taught in the novel Little Women by American white writer Louisa May Alcott. Through these morals, it also aims to study the roots of these morals as part of social values as well as the society of mid-19th century mirrored in the novel.Since the emphasis is on the cultural study, the research is done in the perspective of American Studies. In this case, historical, sociological and cultural approaches are, inevitably, used besides literary approach. All the data used in this research are written text, library research methodology is applied. Books, journals, and many written materials, including internet-based materials, are treated as secondary data, while the novel itself is considered as the primary one. There are three steps in this library research, namely, collecting data, selecting data, and analyzing data. The other method used in this research is analytical-descriptive method, by which all the data obtained are analyzed and presented descriptively. The research shows that American socio-cultural situation in the mid-19th century is basic environment and driving force for the characters’ love, emotion as well as behavior. Its writer Louisa May Alcott arranges the novel structure and preaches proper morals also in accordance with that. A detailed analysis of the American culture here includes its social reform thinking — transcendentalism, literary traditions, women’s social status in the time, and the religious origins behind these values. These cultural heritages reflected in Little Women point out the room for further research on this topic.

Abstract

Colonialism continuously brings about the complexity of excess either to the colonizing country or the colonized country. This essay discusses the post-colonialism effect on African society reflected in Sembene Ousmane’s A Black Skinned Girl. It tells an African black skinned-girl with her obsession to be a successful housemaid in France, yet living a life in misery and sorrows she has passed through every day as a result of her mistress’s colonial conduct. The European white-skinned woman does such a cruel treatment to the African black skinned-girl since she thinks that she has a very dissenting cultural and racial identity. Anti-colonial resistance done by the African black skinned-girl really means nothing, not changing the heart-breaking fate but her death. Not merely oppression, but also African natural resource richness that her white-skinned master and mistress have already exploited.
