Abstract

This study discusses nationalism that has been portrayed in seven novels written by A. Hasjmy, an Acehnese writer. The novels are Melalui Jalan Raya Dunia (1938), Bermandi Cahaya Bulan (1939), Suara Azan dan Lonceng Gereja (1940), Nona Pressroom (1951), Elly Gadis Nica (1951), Meurah Djohan: Sultan Aceh Pertama (1976), and Tanah Merah: Digul Bumi Pahlawan Kemerdekaan Indonesia (1976). The aim of the study is to analyze doctrine of nationalism in the context of Indonesian politics. The main finding of this study shows that Indonesian nationalism is obviously well represented in the novels. This finding is contrary to the public opinion that most of the Acehnese are supporters of the separatist movement, i.e. Acehnese nationalism. Thus, in portraying the nationalism, A. Hasjmy has exploited certain writing techniques in his novels, such as epistolary, speeches, diary, poems and footnotes to camouflage its doctrines and missions. With these findings, the significance of this study is it could elucidate academically that not every Acehnese agrees with the idea of Aceh separatism.

Abstract

As Homo Ludens, human beings inherently possess a penchant for play. They exhibit the remarkable ability to craft various forms of playful devices, one of which revolves around the skillful use of language as their primary vehicle for verbal communication. This paper explores the humorous dimensions inherent in language usage, as artfully harnessed in the signage adorning truck containers. By meticulously scrutinizing these container signs displayed on trucks navigating the highways of Indonesia, this study unveils that the creators of these signs employ three fundamental mechanisms, as articulated by Bergson's (1983) theory, to elicit smiles and laughter from their audience. These mechanisms encompass repetition, inversion, and, most notably, the concept of reciprocal interference within series. Such effects are achieved through various techniques, including phonological alterations, ambiguities, juxtapositions, and the deliberate incorporation of taboos and insults.

Abstract

Understanding English literary works is evitably a big problem for the students of non-English-speaking countries. The writer proposes that intertextuality may help the students to understand them better. Through her study, she tries to find out the problems the students have in understanding literary works, in this case, novels; and to investigate how intertextual study through films can help them to solve the problems. By doing observation and interview to the students in her class of English Prose, she finds out that the problems are the difficulty to understand the sense of the language, the cultural gap, the uncontextuality with their experience, the difficulty to grasp the imagery, and the lack of information about the literary works. Through the films adapted from the novels they read, the students can overcome their problems. The films make them understand the sense of the language, understand the culture, more aware of the relation among people and the situation, feel that they become part of the issues in their lives, get more vivid images about the setting, the characters and other elements, familiar with the issues in the works. All of them help them to understand more the novels they are reading. Keywords: Intertextuality, Film Adaptation

Abstract

This article discusses the discourse of Lombok tourism in Paox Iben's novel Medulla Sinculasis. In Lombok, discourse on tourism was initiated by Tuan Guru Bajang, a religious scholar, after he was elected the governor of West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, in 2008. Within this context, the novel Medulla Sinculasis is discussed. The novel constructs an understanding of Lombok as a tourism destination, beginning with Europe. In this story, Nuruda is driven to visit Lombok after seeing a painting titled Medulla Sinculasis being auctioned at the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands. After returning to Indonesia from Europe, Nuruda decides to travel directly to Lombok and meet Husin Nanang, the painter. His meeting with Husin Nanang, as well as the situation in Ampenan City, leads Nuruda on a transformation from tourist to social activist, fighting to protect the rights and promote the interests of marginal groups. Nuruda's struggle is ultimately unsuccessful, and he is killed in a hit-and-run. The Lombok in this novel is part of the discourse from the 2000s and 2010s, a period that was dominated by the economisation of Lombok. The novel Medulla Sinculasis may be seen part of this dominant discourse, and thus having the economisation of Lombok as part of its agenda.

Abstract

This study relates the discussion of discourse markers to their functions from a social context. It aims to identify discourse markers and analyze their function to construct a social situation in Steve Jobs’ speech delivered at Stanford Commencement Address. To analyze the data in this study, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. This study showed that the dominant discourse markers used were connective, followed by cause result, temporal adverb, and marker of response, respectively, in which the last marker was the least used. Furthermore, all discourse markers functioned to gain coherent message delivery in the speech by considering the “setting and scene," "participants," "ends,” “act sequence,” “key,” “instrumentalities,” “norms of interaction,” and “genre,” all of which were shortened in the acronym of “speaking.”  Finally, based on its social situation, the present study is expected to broaden the understanding of discourse markers in a particular text.

Abstract

The development of semantics as part of Balaghah (Rhetoric) is necessary because of the fact that the semantics got less popularity and it is thought to be hard to learn. For this reason it is necessary to design the learning of ma’ani (semantics) that has orientation to the re-systematization and re-structuralization of the learning material. There is fundamental change in the system of rhetoric, that is placing the ma’ani at the beginning, followed by bayan and badi’. Ma’ani has to be presented easily because it is the gate for the balaghah. The position of Maani in the hierarchy of balaghah can not be separated from grammar that is familiar to be learnt by Indonesian students. The consequence of Ma’ani as the follow up of nahwu is the change of system of learning materials that differs the nahwu perspective and balaghah perspective. Eventually, rhetoric of Arabic language is not only used when analyzing the divine text such as Quran and Hadith but also literary works, poems, prose, advertising , journalism, and others. By having such application balaghah is expected to be more inclusive, not only for analyzing literary works but also for many other analysis, because the final aim of the balaghah is forming civilized people indicated by the ability of adapting oneself properly, beautifully, according to the situation and condition.
