Abstract

In EFL context, it is believed that developing writing skills is more complicated than developing other language skills. In order to be able to write well, the foreign language learners need to be equipped with early and continued writing experiences. Thus, the teacher’s task to develop the students’ writing skill is more complicated than the other skills. One of the most current issues to deal with such phenomena is to ferret out the writing strategy that is able to enhance the students’ writing ability as well as to reinforce their critical thinking in writing by maximizing the use of both sides of the brain (the left and the right hemispheres). In response to such issues, this paper takes into account mind mapping as a strategy in writing and elaborates the theoretical review of mind mapping for better understanding. Keywords: Mind Mapping, Writing

Abstract

This paper attempts to discover the characteristics of the human being through William Blake's Poems as an alternative definition. Among Blake's poems, The Divine Image and The Human Abstract are the most representative of discovering human characteristics. Moreover, this study strives to establish the correlation between Islamic values and European literature. The study uses new criticism in discovering the characteristics in the poems by two steps of analysis; paraphrasing and explication. After conducting the analysis, it is found that there are four positive characteristics in The Divine Image and four negative characteristics in The Human Abstract. The positive characteristics consist of mercy, pity, peace, and love, while the negative ones are exploitation, cruelty, conflict, and hypocritical humility. An Islamic expert, Murtadha Muthahhari, perceives the result of the analysis of the poem. Muthahhari explains fourteen positive and eight negative points of humans following the Holy Qur'an. It is found that the poems' human positive and negative characteristics include in MurtadhaMuthahhari's points of thought. Thus, the ideas of human being’s characteristics in the poems are related to Murtadha Muthahhari’s thoughts.

Abstract

Substantially, “Tasawuf” as the way towards God had been existing since the prophet age; but it was just at the end of the second Hijriyah this term that was known as zuhud became then popularly known as tasawuf. After Islam develops, marked by variety of traditions and sciences as the result of the contribution of various culture expressed through knowledge, tasawuf becomes clear in Islam. Some intellectuals don’t see tasawuf as pure Islam, because some teachings related to certain rituals reflect some tradition and culture. Many intellectuals agreed to Nasr’s opinion, and there are many western intellectuals know tasawuf (Sufism) better than Islam. Now tasawuf has been considered by many people as a universal spiritual value and it is as eternal as Islam. Syawqi Doif, an Arabic intellectual who wrote a lot about the history of Arabic culture and literature, in his book entitled al-Tarikh al-Adab fi al-Ashr al-Abbasyi al-Tsani, especially about zuhud and tasawuf. This paper discussed about tasawuf followed by poems written by mutashawwifin discussing about sufi’s terms. Many sufis left behind them literary works which describe the way they believe. The writer quoted and discussed some poems based on his understanding. Keywords

Abstract

This study aims to describe the patterns and kinds of the prefixes and suffixes of the Selogudigan dialect, a Javanese dialect used by the Selogudig society living in the Probolinggo district. The study is descriptive qualitative and uses a morphological approach to analyze the data, especially in affixation. An interview was done to collect and clarify the data. The interview is transcripted in a phonetical transcription by using IPA symbols. Based on the analysis, it is found that there are five significant prefixes and eight significant suffixes used in the Selogudigan dialect. The prefixes are {N-, i-, mən-, sə-, a-}. The prefix {N-} has allomorphs. They are {m-, n-, ŋ-, ɲ-, ŋə-}. The suffixes are {-i, -an, -ane, -ni, -ən, -nɔ, -ɔnɔ, -e}. The result of this study implies that the affixes which form the morphological pattern of Selogudig vocabularies are often pronounced not in a way the original affixes do. Not to mention, several affixes also change the word class of the root morpheme.

Abstract

The use of English in judicial interactions has increased during court proceedings. A glossary is necessary to design bilingual usage in the context of real-life scenarios. This study is grounded in two theoretical foundations: legal terminology and an ethnographic approach. Qualitative research is employed to investigate the cases presented in the issue. Data are obtained through document analysis and interviews containing technical terms related to the field of judiciary and its scenarios. The data are analyzed using domain, componential, taxonomy, and cultural themes to implement the glossary design based on interviews with language practitioners in the judicial domain. Ten data samples are presented to consider the context, connotations, and clarity of the translations in judicial practice. The findings of this research indicate that implementing an ethnographic approach in designing a scenario-based bilingual legal terminology glossary has significant benefits in ensuring the appropriateness and accuracy of translating legal terms between Indonesian and English.

Abstract

This study discussed students’ perception of translation competence with eco-translatology approach. It aims at understanding the students' perception of translation competence and adaptation to the translation activities in class.  The eco-translatology model proposed that students be active as the translator; most activities are students-centered.  Students act as a translator in which they benefit from resources around them as in an ecosystem life.  The method in this study is descriptive by identifying the students’ perception of translation competence. Translation competence is often associated with students taking part in translation subjects only as mastering linguistics competence without knowing the basic translation competence principle. Therefore, by applying eco-translatology, the students know that translation is not merely transferring the language unit and meaning from source texts (ST) into target texts (TT). The research results show that students had a better understanding when eco –translatology was applied. They acknowledge that translator competence should be grasped to be a real translator. Besides, it also indicates that students are aware of the importance of translation competence to develop their knowledge.
