Abstract

Conflict theory is born as reaction toward structural functional approach for social change analysis. This theory gained its popularity in 1960s, rooted in Max Weber concept of power conflict and Karl Marx’ theses focused on economy conflict. This article emphasized Marx concept concerning social change which is frequently used in conflict argumentation. Although widely used for social analysis, Marx theory has weaknesses, too. Ritzer and Goodman described some critics toward Marxian approach: (1) failed to prove social revolution; (2) unable to comprehend capitalist system flexibilities; (3) too radical; (4) ideological-biased; and (5) unable to prove the success of Marxist-Communist states.

Abstract

Frankfurt School of Thought, which rooted in Marxism and Critical paradigm, provided many ways to interpret the meaning of communication. This school of thought is primarily based on the main tenets of Critical Theory, i.e. totality, consciousness, anomie, and critic. Some questions arise concerning the ontology, epistemology, and axiology dimensions of Frankfurt School of Thought. Ontology discussion concerning the nature of communication involved an intensive outlook of Giddens’s Structuration Theory. Epistemology involved a discussion with Gramscian concepts of hegemony. Meanwhile, the problem of axiology is best addressed in Habermas fashion of agent-structur-dialectics.

Abstract

TV violence becomes one of the main polemics nowadays. Communication experts, media activists, and parents are strongly opposed and debated bad TV content due to its effect on children’s aggressive behavior. As stated by George Gerbner, communication expert who theorized Cultivation Theory, TV power comes from the symbolic content of the real-life drama shown hour per hour, week after week. Furthermore, television is easy to access and relatively cheap. More than 90 percent residents watch TV everyday. Cultivation theory theorized by Gerbner recently has developed and gave birth many other theories such as mainstreaming, resonance, desensitization, and priming.

Abstract

Bagaimana Kita Menjelaskan Penerapan Teknologi?Bagaimana kita menjelaskan penerapan dan penggunaan teknologi? Cukup membingungkan memang.
