ABSTRACTElderlies who lives in nursing home conceive a high risk of experiencing depression. Music that is usually heard by the elderly in Java Province is Javanese gamelan and there was a few of research that examined its effect on the elderlies depression. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of listening to Javanese gamelan on the depression score of institutionalized elderly. This research used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach. The researchers screened 88 elderlies who live in one of nursing home in Yogyakarta with GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale), which acquired 49 depressed elderlies. A purposive sampling technique (criteria: Javanese, not experiencing the hearing loss, cooperative, and not in an isolation room) conduced 26 elderlies as samples. The subjects were divided into two groups with same proportion of ages in each group. Wilcoxon test indicated that there was a decreasing of the depression score in the intervention group (p-value 0.000). The depression score in the control group increased from 7.46 to 9.46. Javanese gamelan is effective in reducing the depression score in institutionalized elderlies. Keywords: Depression, elderly, Javanese gamelan

Abstract

Neonatal jaundice is a clinical condition in infants characterized by yellow staining of the skin and sclera due to the accumulation of unconjugated bilirubin excess. This is the leading cause of deathin 60% -80% of newborns. This research was aimed to investigate the effects of exercise on neonates with nutritional status and vital signs who were receiving phototherapy. In this quasi experimental study, 34 full term neonates with jaundice admitted for phototherapy were selected through quota sampling. Subjects were assigned to exercise and control groups. Neonates in exercise group received a passive extremities exercise for 15 to 20 minutes on extremities twice a day for 3 days, while the control group did not received any exercise. Statistics analysis used independent t test and mann-whitney test. Demographic and clinical characteristics, the defecation frequency, vital sign, total feeding amount and body weight were identified and compared between two groups. On the third day, the exercise group showed a significantly higher defecation frequency (p=0.000) and significant in respiration rate (p=0.029); not significant in vital signs (heart rate p=0.583 and temperature p=0.807;) enteral feeding (p=0.202) and body weight (p=0.181). Exercise could increase defecation frequency in neonates with jaundice receiving phototherapy. The effect of exercise was limited to stabilize temperature and heart rate.

Abstract

Bullying is a universal phenomenon and a common problem amongst school-aged children. Bullying can have a negative impact on the mental health and welfare of children. One strategy that can be done to prevent bullying is to practice assertiveness skills. This study aimed to identify the effect of assertiveness training in reducing bullying behaviour amongst students of Junior High School Padang. The study design was Quasi-experimental with a sample of 81 students (43 controls and 38 interventions). The intervention group received assertiveness training that consisted of 5 sessions, including communicating with others, declaring "no" to irrational requests, expressing complaints, rewarding others and accepting rewards and reinforcing the assertive behaviour with social-drama. Each session duration was 30-45 minutes. Adolescent Peer Relation Instrument (APRI) was applied to measure bullying behaviour. The statistical tests used were Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney. The results showed that there were differences in bullying behaviour before and after intervention between the control group and the intervention group (p-value 0.001). It can be concluded that assertiveness skills training could be maintained as an intervention that would be able to prevent bullying in adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) was the leading cause of death in Healthcare-Associated Infections (HCAI) requiring treatment in its specific prevention. Prevention of VAP had not been done optimally, such as nurses had not done hand hygiene and oral care according to procedure, head elevation not yet done as indicated. Purpose: applying Theory of Planned Behavior to nurse compliance behavior to prevent VAP case in ICU of Catholic Hospital Surabaya. Methods: The study was explanative observational with cross-sectional approach. The population was associate nurses working in the ICU and obtained 30 sample with total sampling. The research variables were general attitude, age, education, experience, knowledge, attitude toward VAP, subjective norm, perception to control, intention, preventive compliance behaviour VAP. Instruments in the form of questionnaires and observations. Data analyzed using bivariate Chi-Square (p<0,05) and Partial Least Square. Results: The results showed that: 1) attitudes, age and experience were associated with intentional support factors (p <0.05), while education and knowledge were not related to intentional support factors 2) intentional support factors related to intention (p <0, 05) 3) Intention related to VAP prevention compliance behavior (p <0.05). Conclusion: Nurse compliance behavior in VAP prevention consider their background factor, support factor of intention, and intention.

Abstract

Fear of falling causes a decrease quality of life of elderly. Tool for identified fear of falling is Modified FES I adopted from FES I. FES-I needs to be developed because it’s used for people with disabilities so it’s not sensitive to assess fear of falling in elderly. Content validation and internal consistency of tools need to be done. Original instrument was translated into Bahasa by two linguists and health professionals. Translation results were translated back into English by two other translators. After considering language equality, content validity was tested by 7 geriatricians (physiotherapists, lecturers and doctors). 105 elderly (±76 years old) in nursing homes were selected by proportional random sampling. Validity index (CVI) and Cronbach's alpha are used to analyze the questionnaire. Modified FES-I contains 16 items. CVI results was > 0.8 for item level and> 0.9 for the entire questionnaire. Questions 1, 3, 4, 5, 10, and 11 need to be modified according to the culture and conditions in Indonesia and 12 need to be modified because it overlaps with number 11. Internal consistency is very good (0.957). The results showed, Modified FES-I is valid and can be used to measure fear of falling in elderly in Indonesia

Abstract

Background: Nurses are the majority health workers in hospitals that have a very large contribution in improving the quality of health services provided to patients. Based on the research of Sulung (2013), it was found that career development was a variable that significantly affected the quality of nursing services. Objective: To determine the factors that influence nurse career development. Method: This study used a cross sectional approach with a sample of 103 nurses. Data was collected using a questionnaire compiled by researchers. Data analysis was performed in univariate, bivariate (chi-square) and multivariate (multiple logistic regressions). Results: Factors related to career development were: displacement/rotation (p = 0.003), opportunity to grow and develop (p=0.001), and organizational policy (p=0.032). The most dominant displacement/rotation factor is related to career development (OR =10,820). Conclusion: In developing nurse careers, hospitals must pay attention to aspects of displacement/rotation, opportunities to grow and develop and organizational policies.

Abstract

Breastfeeding support can increase postpartum maternal confidence when breastfeeding so that it will indirectly increase the success of exclusive breastfeeding. But there are still many postpartum mothers who still do not get good support due to differences in perceptions between mothers, families and health workers. This study uses a descriptive analytic study method that compares the perception of breastfeeding support perceptions in postpartum mothers and health workers in hospitals. 197 postpartum mothers and 37 health workers in the postpartum room of the hospital in the Purwokerto region filled out a questionnaire containing questions related to breastfeeding support. Sampling for postpartum maternal respondents was carried out by consecutive sampling method, whereas for health workers respondents used total sampling. The results of this study indicate there is a gap in perception between postpartum mothers and health workers related to breastfeeding support for postpartum mothers in several indicators of breastfeeding support, namely teaching how to position and attach correctly, act IMD, provide information on signs your baby is getting enough milk, breastfeeding assistance in hospital, information about cadre and lactation counseling, and information to overcome breastfeeding problems at home. Conclusion: There is still a gap in perception of breastfeeding support between health workers and postpartum mothers during hospitalization.
