Abstract

Grounded theory has proven to be a very popular methodological choice for researchers in areas such as education, health, and social since 1960. This review aims to identify and describe the use of grounded theory in the field of psychology. The online database was used as a source including psycINFO, ScienceDirect, and Proquest. There are (N = 18) articles resolved through the screening process by setting exclusion or inclusion criteria. The results of the review on the application of grounded theory in psychology research can be grouped in several points including how to write the title of research, research objectives, to step-by-step grounded theory implementation, technically ranging from researcher attitude, role, and treatment to literature, data collection, its findings. Two grounded theory versions are identified (i.e, classic grounded theory and constructivist) and described in detail the technical applications that can be chosen by the researcher by considering the differences (strengths and weaknesses) between the two. Understanding and disciplined and consistent application of grounded theory will help contribute either in the building, developing, or filling the theoretical gaps that exist. Keywords: classic grounded theory, constructivist grounded theory, psychology

Abstract

AbstractLack of adapted health-related quality of life measurement in Bahasa Indonesia may create difficulties in concluding the effects of heart disease and its treatment on a patient's health-related quality of life in Indonesia. MacNew heart disease health-related quality of life questionnaire (MacNew) has been proven a valid and reliable health-related quality of life measurement. It also has been adapted in several languages.  This study aimed at translating and assessing the Indonesian version of MacNew questionnaire validity evidence based on the relation with other variables on and internal consistency. Validity evidence based on the relation with other variables was assessed by correlating the Indonesian version of the MacNew questionnaire score with cardiac anxiety, gender, age, education level, left ventricular ejection fraction score, and comorbidity. Two hundred thirty-six patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction (MI) filled out the questionnaire at a one-time intake. Results from confirmatory factor analysis revealed three domains of health-related quality of life, namely emotional, physical, and social. The three-domain explained 42.31% of the health-related quality of life total variance. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was good (0.816-0.900). Health-related quality of life was negatively correlated with cardiac anxiety. Male patients had a higher health-related quality of life compare to female patients. However, there was no significant correlation between health-related quality of life and left ventricular ejection fraction and comorbidity. The Indonesian version of MacNew questionnaire demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties and can be recommended to measure HRQOL in heart patients in Indonesia. Keywords: Health-related quality of life, MacNew Heart Disease HRQOL                    instrument, instrument adaptation

Abstract

Abstract The article examines the phase of aggressive behavior, deprivation, among the inmate's age group of Nigerian prison. However, the study elaborated the meaning of aggressive behavior; factors contributed to aggressive behavior, theory of aggressive behavior, literature review, method of information collection and data analysis. Therefore, prison setting can instigate aggressive behaviors, especially in Nigeria, where inmates are deprived of their particular right and are treated brutality in some instances studies shows, that Nigerian prisons are not adequately organized and made do as such, inmates are exposed to all kinds of atrocity. It should be noted that a condition of privation and lack of societal well-being especially among people being in an isolated environment as in the case with most prisons in Nigeria can degenerate to frustration and aggression which in turn can result in dangerous situations such as riots/ violence in the prisons. Aggression can lead to violence that may be adaptive under certain conditions regarding natural selection. That is most obviously the case regarding attacking prey to obtain food, or in anti-predator defense. The results showed that there is significant difference between the levels of aggressiveness with respect to the classes of age groups. Recommendation will be discussed further. Keywords: Aggressive behavior, inmates, wardens, phase, and recommendation

Abstract

AbstractThis study intended to peek into Iranian EFL learners’ metal lexicon through word association tests (WATs).  31 male and female EFL learners studying at Bonab and Marageh language institutes participated in this study. A WAT comprised of 8 English words adopted from Roux’s (2013) word list administered to the participants. The results analyzed and interpreted according to both WA conventional classification and Fitzpatrick’s framework. Within conventional classification (syntagmatic, paradigmatic, and clang), the results confirmed the syntagmatic to paradigmatic change hypothesis (S→P) only between intermediate and upper-intermediate levels. The results also indicated that low intermediate learners besides other conventional factors, associate words based on phonological and orthographical relations. Within Fitzpatrick’s framework, the results indicated that learners generally associate words according to meaning and position across all proficiency levels. However, at low-intermediate level the rate of meaning-based association overwhelms position-based association. Form-based association and erratic association drew the least attention of the participants respectively. Finally, pedagogical implication of this study along with further research idea is discussed.Key words: conventional classification, Fitzpatrick’s framework, mental lexicon, word association test

Abstract

Abstract Globalization has resulted in an increased number of foreign workers in Indonesia. Nevertheless, not all foreign workers can easily adapt to the culture, business, and social situation of the host country. According to cross-cultural literature, the cultural adjustment has been considered as the prerequisite for the success of the expatriates overseas. This study aims to investigate factors that affect the success of the international assignment. Using a qualitative case study approach, this study interviewed five expatriates working in the education industry in Central Java based on the U-curve cultural adjustment theory. The result of this study demonstrates that the inability of an expatriate to adjust with the host country was due to the lack of preparation toward the culture of the host country, resistance with the new culture, conflict-avoiding behavior, and the lack of two-way communication between the expatriate and the local staffs. Keywords: Cross-cultural adjustment, cross-cultural management, expatriate, international assignment, U-curve.

Abstract

AbstractStudents’ low level of motivation becomes a matter of concern to be addressed immediately. Students' motivation needs to be improved as it is a factor that will affect their lives in the future. This study aims to observe or examine the effectiveness of motivation training in increasing students' motivation. The research method used was the pre-experiment with one group pre-test post-test design. The subjects of this study were 15 boy and girl students of Grade X of SMK who had a low level of motivation. The measuring instruments were the motivation scales given during the pre-test and post-test. The quantitative data were statistically analyzed using the Wilcoxon test with non-parametric measurements to determine the significance of difference in the motivation level before and after the training. The data were tested using SPSS 17.0 for Windows. The result of Wilcoxon analysis to test the hypothesis whether there is a difference between the pre-test and post-test of students' motivation showed that the p = 0.025 (p < 0.05). This means that there was a significant difference between the motivation before the treatment (pre-test) and after the treatment (post-test), which indicated that the students' motivation increased after a treatment in the form of motivation training. Keywords: motivation training, motivation
