Abstract

This research entitled Character Belief and Behaviour Potrayed in M. Night Shyamalan’s Devil (2010) As A Psychoanalysis Study. In this research the researcher analyzes the character belief and behaviour toward superstition in M. Night Shyamalan’s Devil (2010). The object used in this research is a film by M. Night Shyamalan entitled Devil In analyzing the data researcher applied a qualitative research. The technique that used to analyze the film is by reading the script and watching the movie and then the researcher applied Carl Gustav Jung's theory of consciousness, namely personal unconscious, collective unconscious, and archetype. Data is collected by watching films and reading dialogue scripts. After analyzing the data it can be concluded that the reason why the character believes in superstition is due to the story of the character's mother and opinions that are repeated over and over. The behavior that is reflected by the character after believing in superstition is the character trying to solve the case using a religious point of view. Meanwhile the effect that arises after believing in superstition is that they succeed in knowing and realizing that the mastermind behind the case is devil.

Abstract

This study is descriptive qualitative study, the focus of discussion is the archetypes of the characters in the short story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry 1905. This short story represents a love story of a married couple who life in the low economic condition. The main characters are Jim as the husband and Della as the wife. It focuses on the explanation on the characters they have. There are some types of psichologycal study by Carl Jung (1953) that can be used to analyze, but the researcher only choose archetypes with three kinds: Ego, Soul, and Self. The researcher found the characteristics and the types archetypes they have. The most archetypes found is the Lover, it might happens because they are couple and the story tells about their struggle in doing the life together after married. This is also make the reader realize that love does not only come from something luxury, but also from suffering together. The result in this study is archetypes can be found in everytone. This sudy might give and improve the knowledge about artcehtypes for the researcher and readers.

Abstract

This research paper entitled Women Independence in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility as a Feminism Study. This research paper aimed to show the form of women independence of Elinor Dashwood and Marianne Dashwood as the main characters in Sense and Sensibility novel. This research is using feminist critical approach and applies Simone de Beauvoir’s theory with her book The Second Sex that was published in 1949. This research used qualitative research methods from which the data are taken from books and online sources. Data is classified into main data which is taken from the book itself and supporting data which is taken from online sources that related to this paper. Beside analyzing the forms of women independence, the researcher also analyzed the causes of women independence and the effects of women independence towards the main characters. The novel presents the independence of thought and behavior of women in the 19th century. After all data have been collected and analyzed, it concludes that the causes of the independence of the main characters is their parents, the forms of their independence is Elinor and Marianne Dashwood can prove that they have a good attitude, good knowledge and ability in the world of art although they are just from the middle social class and the effects is they have a positive and negative effect of their independence and get some obstacles of it. However, after overcoming all their conflicts they finally found what they really wants in life and they can live happily.

Abstract

The current study is aimed to find out the circumlocution especially the kinds and roles of circumlocution used by language learners in their daily interaction. In this research activity, the researcher apply the descriptive qualitative as a research tradition and based on the theory of circumlocution proposed by Arteaga & Llorente (2012). The researcher analyze the gained data with five steps, those were reading the segmented utterances, identifying the utterances, categorizing the utterances that contain circumlocution, tabulating the result of the utterances, and interpreting the findings. In the findings, the researcher found that there are four kinds of circumlocution used by the learners and those were paraphrase, gestures, demonstrate, and switch the code. Paraphrase and gestures are dominant (33,35%), followed by demonstrate (26,68%) and switch the code (6,67%). Alongside the kinds of circumlocution, the researcher also found two roles of circumlocution that were elaborations (15,43%) and confident (26,66%). From the data, the researcher concludes that language learners interact effectively and feel confident by applying paraphrase and gestures.

Abstract

Kick-Ass is a superhero movie. The study aimed to find out about the main character hero’s journey patterns and the characters archetype that occurs in this movie. The data of this study is from watching and analyzed the Kick-Ass movie. This study employed Hero’s Journey from Joseph Campbell to find the patterns with the support from Christopher Vogler for the characters archetype. There are the differences between the hero’s journey Campbell and Kick-Ass movie. In this Study the researcher find 9 stages; The Call to Adventure, Supernatural Aid, The Crossing of the First Threshold, Refusal of the Call, The Meeting with the Goddess, Woman as the Temptress, The Belly of the Whale, Apotheosis and The Ultimate Boon. As for the characters archetype that appearing in this movie are; The Hero, Mentor, Ally, Threshold Guardian, Shape shifter, Trickster and Shadow.

Abstract

This study is a descriptive qualitative study, focused in discussing the domestic violence and man domination that are potrayed in Zora Neale Hurston “Sweat” in 1926. This story presents a woman who is trapped in a bad marriage. This story has protagonist character and antagonist character. The woman in this story is protagonist, and the man is antagonist. The woman becomes victim of domestic violence. She has to struggle to provide her living. As a part of feminism study, the researcher uses feminism approach. It focuses on the explanation on how the character gets violence using Simone de Beauvoir theory “The Second Sex” (1949) which is applied to analyze this research paper. The aim of this research is to analyze the problem of domestic violence towards woman. The researcher shows the domestic violence happened in that era, and men are dominant because of the social construct build to make men are powerful. Domestic violence and man domination in the early 20th century can truly be seen in Zora Neale Hurston story.

Abstract

ABSTRAK This study reveals kinds of gender discrimination experienced by female characters and their efforts against gender discrimination in Hidden Figures movie by Theodore Melfi. The purpose of this study is to find kinds of gender discrimination happen towards female characters and their effort to against gender discrimination based on power feminism which applied in this problem to show that they are strong female character. In analyzing the movie the researcher applied qualitative method and applies feminism approach especially liberal feminism theory by Naomi Wolf (1997). The data were collected by reading the movie script comprehensively and identify the utterances based on the problems. After that the data were analyzed by applying Wolf’s theory. The results show that the female characters experience gender discrimination in work and gender discrimination in education because their gender as woman. Meanwhile although the female characters experience gender discriminations, the female characters in Hidden Figures movie also shows their power to have equal rights such as rejecting the help of man and proving themselves to be capable of man’s work, making direct verbal objection and protest toward male character, explaining about the importance of woman in work place, and also taking legal solution to fight for the fairness in education. The efforts apply power feminism concepts as Wolf suggest. Key words: Gender discrimination, liberal feminism, power feminism

Abstract

The study focuses on the prohibition of women to work that are experienced by the female characters depicted in The Book Thief movie. The prohibition of women to work has many reasons. One of the reasons is that they cannot have the same opportunity to determine their wish, not just in work but also in education. The limitation in having jobs for women is because of the limited education that they have. Which is the education for women is usually categorized as women’s education that is related to the housework considered as appropriate education for women. The method in this study is essentially qualitative research with content analysis technique in The Book Thief movie script by collecting certain information that relates to the research questions on the prohibition of women to work, based on feminism theory by Mary Wollstonecraf “A Vindication of the Right Of Women”. Finding of the study shows that education for women has an important role, such as economic growth and also for the welfare of their own family. If women do not have enough education it will hamper them from the opportunity of employment, with those opportunities they can help their family's economic condition. Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the ego defense mechanism found in the main female character in the Divergent movie script directed by Neil Burger. Divergent is an interesting movie, telling about five factions in the life of humans. This concept makes the audience imagine what if the five factions exist in the real world. This movie presents anxiety experienced by Tris as the main female character. Tris is a divergent person, characterized as having more than one nature. With this characteristic, her life is threatened by the society around as she is considered ‘dangerous’. The research only focused on the defense mechanism employed by Tris to cope up with the anxiety in her life. This research used qualitative methods to reveal Tris’ anxiety and her defense mechanism based on a psychoanalytical theory by Sigmund Freud especially that of anxiety theory. The findings show that Tris undergoes two types of anxiety in this movie script, realistic anxiety and moral anxiety on which to perform featuring five types of ego defense mechanisms, namely Displacement, Reaction formation, Sublimation, Repression, and Regression. Abstract

This study attempts to construe (1) the appraisal devices reflected Bo Seo’s argument, (2) how Bo Seo position arguments that they became viral in debating community. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative. The data in this study is Bo Seo’s argument in the Open Grand Final of World University Debating Championship 2016 Thessaloniki. Furthermore, the data source in this study is the transcribed arguments from a shortened Youtube video by LiveMedia through this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tngaDNSlCpU. When a categorical technique based on Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White (2005) was applied, the results indicate that they are Mono-glossic-Engagement (79.24%), Hetero-glossic-Engagement (20.76%); Affect-Attitude (6.66%), Judgement-Attitude (66.67%) and Appreciation-Attitude (26.67%); Force-Graduation (90%) and Focus-Graduation (10%). Based on the analysis of Appraisal System, the debating community may accept Bo Seo’s argument about the global poverty pursuing Marxist revolution.
