Abstract

The current study explored the use of deictic expressions by the first semester students of English Letters, FBIB UNISBANK in their oral presentations of Performative Spoken English. Included in the deictic expressions are those of  personal pronouns, time, place and discourse. Note taking was used to collect the data from the total population during oral presentation in PSE (performative Spoken English) classes. The data were purely analyzed qualitatively without any numeric calculation.  Errors made by the students  were then analyzed employing Richards’ Error Classification Criteria (https://www.professorjackrichards.com/ ). The findings indicate that all types of deictic expressions were used except that at discourse level.  At first it was assumed that the students failed to observe gthe rules of deictic expressions. But, after Focus Group Discussion (FGD), it also turned out that some students actually only made errors in the use of deictic expressions. The students  managed to identify the errors and to correct them It is therefore recommended that more practice be done on the part of the students.Key words: deictic expressions, oral presentation, error analysis, focus group discussion

Abstract

Children’s stories consist of colorful and beautiful illustration to support the children’s understanding when they read the stories. As the readers they will be interested if the story books whom they read are easy for them to comprehend. The way the children read the book might be different especially when their parents involved in reading stories for them as bed time stories. Sometimes their parents used their own way in reading the stories as they are the characters in the stories. Instead of reading it they are telling it. Simpson (1993) develops a typology of narrators based on the modality of the discourse. Modality is particularly important because of its strongly interpersonal function (Black, Elizabeth, 2006:55). When the story makers tell the story they have the function as the participants in the story (first person narrative or type A) on the contrary the third person narrators belong to type B.Keywords: narrators, typology or narrators, first person narrators, third person narrators

Abstract

One of the foreign languages used in Indonesian schools is English. Before teaching it to the students, teachers should know the characteristics of the students and how to teach them both in spoken and written forms appropriately. It is provided by students to minimize the breakdown of communication in their daily life. In this paper, I would like to propose inventive media: E-INK (Enjoy writing texts using colourful ink) for writing recount texts to the eighth graders of junior high school consisting of three ways: Idyll, Nest and Key. Plomp’s model of Research and Development (1997) was used to develop this product by conducting a preliminary study, development and expert judgements in the evaluation stage. Three results of this research revealed that a) All of the E-INKs’ tasks and activities were suitable for basic competence and the students’ need. b) The E-INK afforded songs to develop the students’ ideas in creating recount texts. c) The writing template offered save and edit models pertaining to the students’ interest. This study is conducted to analyze the conversational implicature recognized in children story book. The object of the study is the story entitled Rumpelstiltskin published by Indian publisher. This study is conducted aimed at finding kinds of conversational implicature recognized in the Young Learner’s story book. Children story book written in English is published to help them learn English. English in Indonesia is as the first foreign language learnt while other countries within Asian continent have English as their second language. TEFL in Indonesia needs more time to make Indonesian students accustomed to use English in their daily conversation. Book is written in many genres and one of it is narrative. Narrative text type is commonly found in the story therefore the author used their imagination in order to help the readers build their own imagination. Building imagination is part of the activity to help children to be creative. The children are still on their growing period therefore they need many stimulus to help them gain more information stored in their brain. India is one of Asian’s country which English as their second language therefore Indian people speak English better than Indonesian. Though Indian as a country is similar to Indonesia in terms of population but they are more productive in using English. Indonesian people should learn from Indian people in using English since English language is used formally at public places including school. Indian authors are also more productive in writing and one of the writing that I analyze in this study is the children’s story belongs to Young Learner’s series. Abstract

Foreign language teachers need to motivate their students to learn English. Literature can be a good means to achieve motivation in literature classes. There has recently been a revival of interest in literature as a practical, motivating and an effective resource available for language learning. Therefore, we can assume that literature and authentic literary materials, especially short stories can enhance students’ motivations. This study focuses on how students’ motivation can be lifted through the use of group discussion as class activities and contemporary literature as learning material. This study is a descriptive qualitative which used questionnaire as main instrument to find out how college students rate English Literature Course and how students can be motivated with certain group activities with certain learning material. The result of this study shows that students rated 82 out of 100 for English Literature Course using group discussion as class activity and contemporary literature as learning material. From this study, there is an obvious implication that college students may enjoy learning English Literature through the utilization of contemporary literature and group discussion. This study found that instead of reading short extracts presented in course books, or any classical short stories, contemporary literature were more suitable complete texts for students to become fluent and competent language users. By learning English through literature, the students’ knowledge and competence are enhanced not only through formal English lessons, but rather through informal cognitive ways, in where the students are invited to examine and analyze how human’s life are portrayed through vocabularies, grammatical structures, and sociocultural dimensions of language.

Abstract

Teens are identical with instability and anxiety for which they need to express as their individual self-actualization. So far there have been no such efforts to accommodate their needs through literary works. The current study explores the dictions employed in English poems written by the students (identified as teens) of English Letters Study Program to find about how far a poem can be as a means for teens to express their feelings. The subjects were assigned to write poems of their interests. The 32 poems were then analyzed and interpreted to find out how most students expressed their anxieties in terms of love to parents, love to boy/girlfriends, friendship, hope, admiration, disappointment, encouragement, divinity and educational goals. The findings indicate that they turn out to be able to write poems when they are emotionally touched. In particular, they employed a limited range of lexical items to express their love to their parents, boy/girlfriends, in addition to love to their college in pursuit of their educational goals. As the general practice of teaching literature ending up with the students’ analyzing literary works, it is high time that they were assigned to write poems to express their feelings. Abstract

Literature represents and portrays variation of society and all human life’s aspects. This includes common happenings. On behalf of this matter, there is an importance to study the literature as a model of real life and society, followed by certain phenomena happened in certain time. For ages, oppression and depression are one of frequents phenomena. Oppressions are often found in women, especially in housewives. This may lead to implication that housewives may undergo psychological problem, such as depression. In literary work, both woman-oppression and depression are often found in many kinds of works, such as movie and short-story. This research focused on two short-stories written by Thomas Hardy “An Imaginative Woman” (1893) and Jhumpa Lahiri “Interpreter of Maladies” (1999). Both were analyzed using feminism and psychoanalysis approach in terms of proving the hypothesis that woman-oppression can become source of depression in housewives’ lives. The findings showed that domestic women, especially those who only work as housewives experienced depression because of their lack of social-connection. In both short-stories, the depressed housewives would lead her life into troublesome habits, such as having delusions, having affair beyond marriage, being ignorant toward her family, being in destructive behaviors, and even wishing her own death. This findings surely became an implication that women-oppression will indeed lead women into self-destructing behaviors.
