Abstract

This study aims to explain the causes of the main female character conflicts, the effects of the conflicts experienced by the main female character and also Ego defense mechanism performed by the main female character in the Maleficent’ s movie. This data was taken from Movie script. The author examines the dialogue and the scene. The view of ego defense found in the Maleficent's movie is well supported in literary criticism, but the discussion focuses on ego defense on Maleficent's character as seen in striking behavior with a revenge plan in the film, namely the curse of Steffan's daughter named Aurora. The theory used in this study is psychological approaches by Sigmund Freud. Meanwhile, qualitative descriptive method is used in the study with the implementation of Ego Defense Mechanism theories. Results showed that in terms of importance, Maleficent was categorized as the main female character. Also, the causes of the main female character conflicts are about disappointment has been betrayed by Steffan. Second, the effect of the conflicts experienced by the main female character is Maleficent curses Aurora as revenge to Steffan because he cuts off both wings. Third, Maleficent changes her characters become good characters because she realizes that she sincerely loves Aurora. Also, there are two ego defense mechanisms she used include projection and repression. Key Words: Ego Defense Mechanism, Sigmund Freud theories, Revenge, Maleficent character conflict.

Abstract

This article entitled “Mispronunciation of English Fricatives and Affricates Produced by English Students of Stikubank University.” This research aims to reveal the similarities and differences between English and Indonesian phonetic and to find out the fricatives and affricates categorized as difficult to be pronounced by the final semester students. The research focuses on phonetics, which is divided into two categories, fricative, and affricate. The researcher used the qualitative method in analyzing the data supported with some linguistics theory such as English Phonetic by Fromkin (1988), Indonesian phonetic by Chaer (2012), interference by Lado (1965), Saville (1971) Richards and Stenson (1978), Ellis (2006), and interlanguage by Ellis (1994)). The study revealed that there are six Indonesian fricatives that similar with the English fricatives, they are [f, s, z, ʃ, h}, besides the different fricatives and affricates found on [v, θ, ð, ʒ, ʧ, ʤ]. The respondents failed in pronouncing labiodental fricatives [v] the deviation is 65% caused by devoicing mispronunciation, dental fricative [θ] with deviation 80% as the result of mispronunciation of two consonants which are in a close place of articulation, and palate-alveolar fricative [ʒ] is 68,3% as the result of spelling mispronunciation. Abstract

The aim of this research is to prove that the main female character in this film is fighting the patriarchy system in her tribe to gain the equality by becoming the leader. As the lineage of the leader, she thinks it is her rights to take the leadership in her tribe and continue the line of her family’s destiny as the leader. Even though, her grandfather objected it because she is a female. The subject of this research is Whale Rider film. The primary data of this research is the script of Whale Rider film. The data will be obtained from the writer’s observation of the film and some sources, such as books, article, and journals which related to gender inequality. The data analysis was conducted using feminism approach. The finding shows there are two events of gender inequality which the main female character faces: (1) Pai turned on the boat machine, her grandfather was mad at her and forbade her to do that again. (2) Pai was scolded by her grandfather because she used taiha secretly. Moreover, there are two effects such as: (1) Pai secretly followed the sacred class by hiding behind the window’s class. Abstract

Teaching media becomes one of the problems faced by teachers in teaching English as a foreign language for young learners. The use of appropriate teaching media is essential for teachers to be successful. This study aims to discuss the contribution of flash cards in introducing English vocabularies to the first graders of SDN Brumbungan Semarang. The model of Classroom Action Research by as proposed Kemmis and McTaggart was applied in two cycles and the data were analyzed qualitatively by involving data reduction, data categorization, data synthesis, and stating action hypothesis. The findings show that flash cards can motivate students, help students in remembering vocabulary, and helping teachers in introducing English specific vocabularies more easily. It can be shown that students who were participating in the activities were active, responsive, confident, enthusiastic, and enjoying the learning process. It can be concluded that teaching media used for young learners is really helpful in introducing English. However, teachers should understand the students’ level and have innovations in creating variations in learning activities using teaching media. Abstract

This research primarily aims to analyze the psychological aspects of the main character in The Black Cat short story. This study, used Psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud to analyze the short story, to find out the anxieties and defense mechanisms used by the main character. Qualitative method was equipped in this study. The data was taken from The Black Cat short story by Edgar Allan Poe. In this study, the main character showed many psychological problems in shape of anxiety. The Main character showed Neurotic, Realistic, and Moral Anxiety. This study also revealed several types of ego defense mechanisms used by the main character to overcome his anxieties. They are: Displacement, Denial, Acting Out, Symbolization, and Projection Defense Mechanism. Keyword: Psychoanalysis, Anxiety, Defense Mechanism, The Black Cat short story.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to compare the language uses between two different genders who are communicating in twitter. The data were taken from Taylor Swift and Harry Styles’ tweets; 50 random tweets from each gender were collected to be analyzed. The data were analyzed using internet language theory by Danet (2001). The descriptive and qualitative method was used. The result showed that two similarities found in their tweets; there were four types of internet language they took and two were not used. While, the two singers also created several differences, such as; most of Taylor Swift’s internet language was emoticon while Harry Styles was capital letter, Taylor Swift used eight types and Harry Styles only five out eleven, and the last was that Taylor Swift succeeded to type 154 numbers of data but Harry Styles typed 259 data. The researcher concluded that Taylor Swift who reflected as women, turned out to be more expressive and chose more forms of language than men. While Harry Styles who represented as men tended to be assertive, did not like to express his feeling, and use fewer types. The study is important to know how different gender communicate to make a good relationship in social life. Key Words: langugage, gender, internet language uses, tweet

Abstract

This study aims to answer the statement of the problems: (1) what kind of point of view is used in the movie entitled “The Princess Bride”, (2) What kind of focalization is used in “The Princess Bride movie”, (3) How does the narrator know everything regarding the story. The researcher uses theory by Genette (1980) and the researcher uses qualitative method. The result of the analysis showed that: (1) this movie uses third-person perspective in the movie because the narrator uses nominative form and accusative form in the movie, (2) the researcher found that the narrator as omniscient narrator, this is indicated that this movie used zero focalization because the narrator knows everything regarding in the movie such as the main character feelings and activities in the movie and the narrator also knows the minor character feelings, past, and activities in the movie. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is held to: (1) To highlight the discrimination faced by P.T. Barnaum and his circus friends as lower class people, (2) To disclose the reason why the upper class people hated P.T. Barnaum’s circus, and (3) To find out the effects of discrimination experienced by PT Barnaum and his friends and how they overcame it using marxism theory by Karl Marx. This reasearch used qualitative methodology. The result of this study is that the discriminations faced by P.T Barnum and his circus friends were social class and physical appearance discrimination, upper class people hated P.T. Barnum’s circus because it was consi-dered fake and because of its performers’ appearances, P.T. Barnum and his friends experienced seclusion and inferiority complex. They overcame it by doing self-acceptance and looking for recognition. Keyword: Discrimination, popular culture, social categorization.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study analyze how the political discrimination happen in Royal Family and how the main character response from her action to get the throne. This study used Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement movie as the data. This study used qualitative method. In collecting the data the researcher watched the movie and read the script. The theory used in this study is Kate Millet: Sexual Politics. Millet’s theory provides that sex is politic. It means the relationship of women in society with men is a political relationship, a relationship that is based on the structure of power, namely a group of people which is controlled and dominated by other humans. The findings show that the main character gets political discrimination from The Royal Parliaments and there is an ambition from a third part who wants to overthrow position in the first place in the throne. The researcher has found the action of female characters to gain the throne in this movie. There are some activities that Mia should learn to be a queen. Mia learns to practice all outdoor activities with the traditions of the Genovian Royal Family. Starting from learning archery to prepare for the night of ceremony when she later took the throne, and horse riding as a review Royal Guard. The end of the movie, Mia asking all member of The Royal Parliaments to change that law who purpose a woman to get married first before she gets the throne. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis writer's thesis discusses one of the elements of feminism, namely radical feminism in the Disney movie, Mulan employing Kate Millett's Theory, Sexual Politics (1970). This study uses a qualitative study as a reference in the preparation of research. Data collection was taken by watching movies, identifying data, and classifying data. Theanalysis is based on the statement of the problem.They are how Mulan's struggled to prove that a woman is also able to become a hero and What the factors that make Mulan unable to be a proud as a daughter in her family.Sexual politics is a belief that struggles for women to have masculine and feminine behaviors by fighting for gender equality so that actually women also need to do men's roles. of serving their husbands and caring for children, it is also considered that good women are only able to do. Besides that, Mulan wants to change the mindset of society if women can also do men's jobs. Women are able to fight if they have determination and courage. The purpose of the writer in writing this study is that readers who are currently studying feminism get a better idea of ​​the history of feminism especially radical feminism, and the writer also wants to invite readers to fight and struggle for women's rights in a good way, because society needs to understand equality, namely women's rights such as women's empowerment, etc.Keyword: Feminism, Radical Feminism, Patriarchy, Sexual Politic
