Abstract

This study applies Yule's theory to evaluate the use of deixis in the lyrics of Sam Smith's song "Love Goes," which appears on his album "Love Goes." 'Deixis' is derived from the Greek word deiknymi, which literally translates as "to demonstrate" or "to point out." In this case, it is employed to draw attention to the elements of the speech that are pertinent to the current context. According to the research, the many types of deixis, their meanings, and why they are utilized in specific song lyrics are explained. The writer explores the numerous sorts of deixis that may be derived by listening to and reading song lyrics from Sam Smith's album "Love Goes," which is based on the descriptive qualitative technique. In the next section, the writer identifies and categorizes the deixis that can be found in song lyrics. The writer's next step is to conduct an analysis of the data, which is supported by Yule's theory at this point. The writer discovered deixis types such as person deixis, geographical deixis, and temporal deixis after examining all of the data from Sam Smith's song lyrics from the "Love Goes" album. All of the tracks on the "Love Goes" album feature 486 deixis per person, 41 deixes per spatial location, and 44 deixis per time. Each of the three forms of person deixis has its own classification: first-person, second-person, and third-person. The first person deixis is employed in order to identify the person who is speaking. This song uses the second person deixis to convey the addresser's identity, which in this case happens to be his girlfriend in the song. The third person deixis is supposed to show an undetermined referent; nevertheless, in this album, it alludes to the persons who are in the immediate vicinity of the singer and his love interest. Spatial deixis is used in every song to identify the location of a participant in a speech event to which the singer or speaker belongs, whereas temporal deixis is used to signify a specific time period that the singer or speaker has lived through or experienced. Keywords: deixis, Sam Smith, song lyrics

Abstract

This article discusses how a speaker should recognize refusals of requests in English. The choices of whether or not uttering refusals or the selection of expressions to be used in uttering the refusals could disrupt or maintain the interaction with language in progress. Therefore, a discussion on related theories needs to be presented in this article in the effort as to provide insights of significant aspects in uttering refusals of requests. It is a descriptive discussion that it only presents arguments on speech acts of refusals by reviewing its related theories. Speech Acts of Refusals  ( SARs ) may gain much attention in the discussion since it is the central focus of the discussion. Conversational Principles and Face Threatening Acts of Politeness Theory are also touched because they also help the speaker to think of how to utter refusals of requests. Thought Patterns, on another side, culturally and pragmatically color the manner a speaker should utter refusals of requests in a given cultural context. Finally, the discussion also presents the degree of sensitiveness to social status, social distance and gender between the interlocutors in expressing refusals since those factors influence the choices of expressions of refusals.Key words: Speech Acts of Refusals  ( SARs ) , Conversational Principles, FTA in Politeness Theory, Thought Patterns.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to identify the subject-verb agreement errors in the students’ descriptive writings. This study discussed the reasons for the productions of subject-verb agreement errors in students’ writings. A total of 25 writings were collected from the second semester students of Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies of University of Stikubank Semarang in the academic year 2009-2010. The average number of clauses of each writing was 40. The researchers took 20 clauses (50%) from each writing as samples, so there were 500 clauses to be analyzed. The frequency of errors was identified through the analysis of the students’ descriptive writing. The findings of the study showed that there were 124 errors (24.80%) in subject-verb agreement produced by the students in their descriptive writings. From the findings of the study, the researchers summarized that the errors produced by the students were due to the L1 (Indonesian language) interference whereby the students transferred and translated their L1 into L2 (English language).  Other reason for the error production was errors whereby the students could not apply the rule of the subject-verb agreement appropriately in their writings. The results of the study showed that the students still need more instruction and practice in using subject-verb agreement in their writings. Keywords: descriptive writing, subject-verb agreement, clauses
