Jayapura city is the capital of Papua province, located at the eastern end of Indonesia and the borders with neighboring countries, Papua New Guinea. From the results of population census in 2010 the population of the Jayapura city is 256.705 inhabitants with a number of indigenous people as much as 89.773 people (34.97%) and as many as 166.932 nonPapua population (65.03%). Â This figure shows that in Jayapura city, the number of migrants is much more than the indigenous people. Â The term amber and komin then appears that refers to the indigenous people of Papua (komin) and immigrants nonPapua (amber). Â The high migration flows in Jayapura resulting diversity in socio-cultural and economic structure of the population. Â This impacted on the formation of the population settlement patterns. Â This paper discusses the ethnic heterogeneity in Jayapura city community in shaping the urban spatial pattern. Â From the discussion, it is known that the existing settlements in Jayapura city consists of settlements indigenous peoples, settlements inhabited by a mixed population of Papua and nonPapua population, settlements inhabited by ethnic Papuans from outside the city of Jayapura and settlements inhabited by ethnic immigrants certain nonPapua. Settlement indigenous peoples still survive as indigenous settlements that have a spiritual religious meaning that must be maintained and protected. While the settlement of migrants Papua and nonPapua formed by some preferences, namely the ties of kinship, proximity to sources of livelihood (workplace) and social status.

Local communities are frequently judged as the main driver of forest degradation and deforestation because of the weak recognition to local ecological knowledge (LEK) or traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). We assessed that it is important to elaborate the attributes of LEK and TEK as a way to describe why and how the local community clears the forest, as well as its relation to local practices, named parak and rimbo. Our research uses case study method to describe the local practices in Simancuang community, Alam Pauh Duo Village, South Solok District, West Sumatra Province. We conducted unstructured interviews, observations, and documents selection which were analyzed through categorization and codification as well as complemented with history analysis, spatial analysis, and related document analysis. The results showed that Simancuang community knowledge can describe the attributes of LEK and TEK as a unified whole of local knowledge for sustaining their livelihoods. Therefore, the forest clearing by Simancuang people is one of the livelihoods strategies, but they were not the main driver of forest degradation and deforestation in South Solok District.

The paper concerns a youth environmental movement in Bandung to save the urban forest Babakan Silawangi. It is proposed that space for protest plays a significant role in social movements such as environmentalism. Public assembly allows activists to voice their political objections and make their discontent known to the citizenry. Yet political space is different to physical place. According to Henri Lefebvre, political space is an assemblage of co-creation by individuals who occupy the space and demonstrate their subjective meanings for it in expression and lived experience. Since the subjective/collective meanings perceived and experienced by the activists are powerfully enacted, the space itself may shape their identity and this study explores those meanings, which are relational, contextual, and spatial.

This paper aims to explore the beliefs in society toward traditional healing regardless of the more accessible, affordable and improved modern health services. This ethnographic study was conducted in Yogyakarta in 2013-2014. Phenomenological approach was used to analyze the data using the theory of health seeking behavior as the guiding principle of this research. The main factor influencing Javanese community’s belief in traditional healing was the power of placebo effect. Placebo can arise from both the patient and the healer. Additionally, other factors such as compatibility between the patients and the healer, patient’s aversion to doctor’s therapy, and the fact that traditional treatment is cheaper, easier, and more effective than modern medicine were the main considerations for patients in choosing traditional treatment. The benefit of psychotherapy provided through traditional medicine is in the form of life advices or counseling. In addition, healers’ attentiveness in listening to patients’ complaints was also the main appeal of the traditional health care service.
