Abstract

This article explores the use of storytelling by the Muslims of South Sulawesi in their efforts to confront the formalization of Islamic law in the province. My specific objective is to nuance the existing approach to Islam and Muslim life, which to date focuses on scriptural argumentation, or analytical reasoning based on the Quran and other Islamic sources. The exclusive focus on scriptural argumentation as the main approach to explain Islam does not help us to understand how Muslims use non-analytical forms of human communication in response to shari’a formalization. The experiences of Muslims in South Sulawesi demonstrates that storytelling can be a meaningful and direct means to express Islamic identity and to challenge the formalization of shari’a. In the hierarchies of reasoning used in South Sulawesi by Muslims, scriptural argumentation is not the most important

Abstract

This paper elucidates a map of Indonesian Muslim communities around Sydney in order to observe the possibility to promote a moderate and tolerance of Indonesian Islam worldwide. Indonesian Muslims who live in Australia are relatively small if we consider that we are the closer neighbor of Australia and have the biggest Muslim populations in the world. Most Indonesian Muslim communities in Sydney are in a form of kelompok pengajian (Islamic study group), which is commonly based on ethnicity, regionalism (province and regency), and religious affiliation with Indonesian Islamic groups. The main problems of Indonesian Muslim communities in Sydney are an ambiguous identity, laziness integration, and dream to home country. Most Indonesian Muslim diaspora in Sydney only consider Australia as the land for making money. Therefore, their inclusion to Australian community is just being “Indonesian Muslim in Australia” and it seems hard for them to be “Australian Muslim”, especially in the case of those who already changed to be Australian citizens. This kind of diaspora attitude differs from Muslims Diasporas from the Middle East and South Asia countries who are mostly ready to be fully Australian Muslim. Naturally, most Indonesian Muslim communities put their emphasis to develop their community based on social needs and try to avoid political idea of Islamism. In this case, the Indonesian government, through the Indonesian Consulate in Sydney, has great resources to promote moderate and tolerant views of Indonesian Islam to other Muslim communities, as well as to Western media. In optimizing resources of Indonesian Muslim communities in Sydney to envoy Indonesian cultures and policies, it is necessary for Indonesian government to have a person with integrated knowledge on Islamic Studies who are working officially under the Indonesian consulate in Sydney.  It is based on the fact that most Indonesian Muslim communities needs a patron from the government to manage and soften some differences among them, especially related to problems of identities, as well as to link them with the wider Australian communities.

Abstract

Stereotypes as being impoverished are often attached to the inhabitants of coastal areas in Indonesia. But the stereotypes cannot be applied to the residents of Suradadi village where the villagers are quite prosperous. The economic advancement occurs in the village follows the transformation of fishing methods from miyangan (traditional fisherman) to longlenan (modern fisherman). The transformation is influenced by role of social networks that exist in the coastal village communities Suradadi. In this research, the author examines the roots of transformation from miyangan to longlenan, the role of social networks, and the social changes following the transformation in the community. The research use qualitative method. The study found that that the economic factor, prestige, a desire to see the outside world is the basis of transformation from miyangan to longlenan. To be longlenan, fishermen use social networks by sharing information and by being a broker. The impact of longlenan fishing is economic changes, higher social status of longlenan fishermen and the changes of lifestyle, family relationships and values

Abstract

Over the past decade, a shift has occurred in the Sedulur Sikep community’s attitude since the increase in its popularity and coverage in the mass media following its involvement in the anti-cement movement in Central Java. However, not all members of Sedulur Sikep participate in or even approve of this movement. This anthropological study attempts to illustrate how this situation has pushed the Sikep community members to (re)recognize their values, the influence of these values on environmental discourse, and how the relations between them are understood and practiced by Sedulur Sikep and the movement fighting in its name. By examining the adaptability of ecological knowledge and the ordering of visible space as a result of complex interactions between nature and nurture, it is possible to examine the shifts in their understanding of environmental dynamics and their cultural identity. The ‘fragmentation’ that has occurred is rooted in different understandings of the reciprocal bonds between the Sedulur Sikep’s tani mligi identity and natural resources. The dynamics and stagnation seen in how Sedulur Sikep positions itself in relation to cement production is also apparent in various methods of (re)interpretation, particularly regarding the relevance of Sedulur Sikep’s beliefs to its ecological contestation and struggle for living space.
