Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop computer-based experiment of free fall movement to improve the graphical literacy of the Physics Education students. This study employed quasi-experimental design, particularly the pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample was 58 students of the first semester of Physics Education study program. They were divided into two groups, namely 38 students constituted an experimental group and 20 students constituted the control group. Both groups joined learning activities at laboratory and classrooms with the same topic which is the free fall movement. Computer-based learning models were used to design learning activities for the experimental group, while the control group used a traditional learning model with manual experiment with stopwatch and never use experiment tool of free fall movement. It was indicated in this study that the use of such learning model improved the graphical literacy capability better than the traditional learning, which covered ability to identify experimental variables, using the experimental tools, making a graph, formulating mathematical equation, making predictions on the basis of the graph.

Abstract

Student’s critical thinking and their learning result depend on learning design and student’s activity.  Most students use their spare time with playing game.  Students are more challenged by the difficulty in playing game rather than facing the difficulty in understanding the lesson.  This phenomenon is the basic reason of the researchers to develop a game that has the essence of the subject matter, namely Chemistry Board Game (CBG) or we can call it with Al Chemist Knight.  This research aims to develop a suitable digital game based on android system. In this research media was used to improve the cognitive learning and critical thinking. It also has purpose to evaluate the response of learners in learning chemistry through alkane derived compound topic. The development of this game was adapted from the procedure of game development process in mobile 3D presentation.  The collection of evaluation data model applied was pre test and post test in trial class.  The result showed that in the pretest the learning result average was 34.35 with classical target of 5%.  While the posttest learning result average was 80.51 with  classical target of 85%. The  n-gain factor was 0.703.  Based on the result of the students questionnaire data analysis, 3.025 of students responded positively to the implementation of CBG.  A CBG media makes an assessment of critical thinking, in which the indicator of critical thinking which are focusing on questions get 3,1 point, giving arguments get 2.95, asking and answering questions get 3.0, making decision get 3.05, and the average score of critical thinking indicator is 3.025 which belongs to good category. Based on the students’ response questionnaire, we get the average score of 3.3 or 82.5% which is classified in good category.

Abstract

Normalized change is a familiar expression used to measure student’s improvement in physics education research, including critical thinking skill improvement. A widely used standardized critical thinking test is the Cornell Critical Thinking Test. The CCTT scoring method, rights minus one-half the number wrong, results from possible interval scores ranging from the negative minimum score to positive maximum score. The problem then arises in the use of the normalized change in CCTT scores, particularly in the situation when the post-test score is worse than the pre-test score. We reveal the used equation deficiencies and demonstrate the mistakes made by undergraduate researchers, as well as suggesting a modified equation that can be used under the normalized change rationale, i.e. the ratio of the gain or the loss of the maximum possible gain or loss. Some frequently asked questions about normalized change are also discussed.

Abstract

The results of previous studies show that students of Physics Education (S1 and S2), FKIP Syiah Kuala University more than 50% do not understand the programs and roadmap of Pilar ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community as a part of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The inference of those results to the implementation of learning physics and science education system needs to be implemented through a link and match learning model that can improve the ability to think critically and creatively, and students need to be trained to be problem solvers, not the problem makers.Based on these problems, through this research has been applied physics learning by using Problem Solving strategies on 25 students of Master of Physical Education and Science. At the end of the implementation study measured the ability of students to apply problem-solving strategies in accordance with Answer Sections of Problem Solving adopted from previous research. The results showed that the majority of students (78%) are able to implement the stage I (Focus on Problem) with a complete, almost all respondents (91%) was only able to implement the stage II (Describe the Physics) of about 40%, almost all respondents (91% ) can apply for the stage III (Plan The Solution) approximately 80% of all respondents have been able to implement the stage IV (Excute the Plan) perfectly, and all respondents have been able to apply the stage V (Evaluate the Answer) completely. It is expected that all staff of teaching Science materials (Physics), they are recommended strongly to implement Problem Solving as an alternative strategy for preparing students to face global competition in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

Abstract

The global climate phenomenon in the context of climate change is the impact of both the dynamic complex climate system and human behaviors that affect environmental sustainability. Human is an important component that should be considered in science teaching that is believed to improve human attitudes towards the environmental sustainability. The research aims to investigate the perceptions of pre-service science teachers and science teachers in South Sumatra who teach climate change and global warming. The data were collected from 17 science teachers and 53 pre-service science teachers from April to August 2016. The instruments were 17 modified questions which were developed from Pruneau’s framework. There are three linear perceptions regarding climate change. First, greenhouse effect causes global warming and global warming causes climate change. Second, ozone leakage causes global warming and global warming causes acid rain. Third, greenhouse effect causes ozone leakage and ozone leakage causes global warming; then it causes climate change and other climatic phenomena. Both pre-service science teachers and science teachers argue that climate change is caused by global warming. Actually, climate change is not only global warming but also global cooling. Those phenomena occur because of interactions among climate system components. They do not believe that education is able to change human attitudes in saving environmental sustainability from global climate change disasters. They believe that media give stronger effects than teachers in shaping those perceptions. Factually, most of wrong perceptions come from media.
