Abstract

Research and development are aiming to develop critical thinking skills-based modules on the respiration system materials to empower the learning outcomes; verify the effectiveness of critical thinking skills-based modules with teaching materials in schools based on student learning outcomes. Research and development method are using Borg &amp; Gall development procedure with nine phases. Data analysis that used for the research and development are qualitative and quantitative descriptive. Research and development results show that critical thinking skills-based modules on the respiration system materials were developed according to the indicators of critical thinking skills and knowledge dimension that visualised on the objectives, materials, activities and evaluation questions which are developed to empower the learning outcomes. The result of module effectiveness test, showed by Anacova test result are FCount = 180,4 on factual, conceptual, procedural learning outcomes which are visualised in the form of multiple choice questions and FCount = 40.2 metacognitive learning results are visualised in the form of essays.

Abstract

Science Education Seminar course aims to develop the communication skill of students. The materials and assignments are given to train how to communicate effectively both written and orally. The tasks consist of the scientific papers analysis, conceptual article draft, and other assignments. It took longer time to assess those assignments with only pencil and paper methods therefore a web-based alternative assessment was designed to assess the assignments. Web-based alternative assessment (e-assessment) can facilitate students and lecturer in the process of collecting and assessing tasks. The validation score by the assessment expert of the four aspects resulted 94,64%, 92,86%, 91,07%, and 92,86% meanwhile the score of expert information systems was 90, 63%. Thus the product can be said as valid in very feasible category with the average score of 81.5%. The percentage of positive responses of students was 84,43% that indicates the product is effective to help students and lecturers in the assessing students’ assignment and performance. Therefore, it can be said that the research has met the indicator of feasibility to result a valid and effective product.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the differences in learning outcomes of between students that are given the Physics learning models of Inquiry-Student Team Achievement Division (ISTAD) and guided inquiry, between students who have high achievement motivation and low achievement motivation. This study was an experimental study with a 2x2x2 factorial design. The study population was the students of class X of SMAN 1 Toroh Grobogan of academic year 2016/2017. Samples were obtained by cluster random sampling technique consists of two classes, class X IPA 3 is used as an experimental class using ISTAD model and class X IPA 4 as the control class using guided inquiry model. Data collection techniques using test techniques for learning outcomes, and technical questionnaire to obtain the data of students' achievement motivation. Analysis of data using two-way ANOVA. The results showed that: (1) there is a difference between the learning outcomes of students with the ISTAD Physics models and with the physics model of guided inquiry. (2) There are differences in learning outcomes between students who have high achievement motivation and low achievement motivation. (3) There is no interaction between ISTAD and guided inquiry Physics models learning and achievement motivation of students.

Abstract

Learning science is not limited to reviewing the concepts, but strengthens the identity of a nation that has a diversity of cultures. Science learning objectives that have been set in Indonesia, including the student is able to apply the science wisely, to maintain and preserve the cultural survival. The study aims to measure students' ability to relate concepts of science with local knowledge to use mind maps compiled individually. The results showed that 85% of teacher candidates are able to determine the relationship of science and local knowledge correctly. The ability to link the two domains, through the literature review, observation and interviews.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students’ decision making strategy to answer TIMSS science reasoning test in cognitive reasoning domain. This research is quantitative descriptive research. The result shows that students tend to use compensatory strategy for decision making in solving multiple-choice questions and use rational category to answer essay questions. The result shows that more than half of students have been able to answer the questions TIMSS science tests correctly.

Abstract

This research is to investigate the students` critical thinking skill by using STEM education through Project Based Learning. The study applied descriptive research design. In these lessons, the participants were 160 first grade Japanese middle school students from four classes. They were divided into nine groups each class. The instruments are worksheets to explore students’ initial knowledge about how to clean up wastewater and critical thinking processes. The worksheet consists of the designing solution, and understanding of concepts to identify critical thinking based on purpose and question, selection of information, assumption, and point of view the solution, and implication. Students were asked to design tools to clean up the wastewater. Students were given more than one chance to design the best product for wastewater treatment. The lessons consist of six lessons. The first lesson is the introduction of colloid, solution, and suspension, and discussion about wastewater. The second lesson to the fourth lesson was finding solutions and designing products. The fifth lesson was to watch a video of wastewater treatments in Japan and to optimize the solutions or products. The last lesson was to make a conclusion, to exchange presentations, and to develop discussion. Implementation of STEM education can be seen from the students` solutions, some students used biology or chemistry or physics or combination concept and Mathematics to design solution (technology) for treatment of wastewater. The result showed that the mean score of students` critical thinking skill was 2.82. The students` critical thinking skill was categorized as advanced thinker: 41.6%, practicing thinker: 30,6%, beginning thinker: 25%, and challenged thinker: 2.8%.  And the category for students` critical thinking was practicing thinker.  Practicing thinker is a stage of critical thinking development, they have enough skill in thinking to critique their own plan for systematic practice, and to construct a realistic critique of their powers of thought to solve the contextual problem.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the differentiation between high school biology olympiad in the District of North Kayong and the National Biology Olympiad. The analysis is used to provide feedback to students regarding their knowledge in the forms of factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive traits. This research is a descriptive study consisting of two phases: the stage of designing test items carried out by four Biology teachers who joined the group, Science Teachers Council, and the test tryout phase given to 33 high school students of class XI. This research resulted in the dimensions of knowledge which indicates that there are 79% (63 items) being in the dimension of the factual, as much as 15% (12 items) in the conceptual, as much as 6% (5 items) in the procedural, while the metacognitive dimension is 0%. The question package which was given in the preliminary phase test was 5% considered difficult, while in the final stage such difficulty was not found (0%). Therefore, it is concluded that the question items need to be revised because they have differentiation between high school biology olympiad in the District of North Kayong and the National Biology Olympiad.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain a profile of students’ creative thinking skills on quantitative project-based protein testing using local materials. Implementation of the research is using quasi-experimental method pre-test post-test control group design with 40 students involved in Biochemistry lab. The research instrument is pre-test and post-test using creative thinking skills in the form of description and students’ questionnaire. The analysis was performed with SPSS 22.0 program to see the significance normality, U Mann-Whitney test for nonparametric statistics, N-Gain score, and the percentage of student responses to the practicum performed. The research result shows that the pretest rate in the experimental group is 8.25 while in the control group is 6.90. After attending a project-based practicum with local materials, the experimental group obtained the mean of posttest is 37.55 while in control class is 11.18. The students’ improvement on creative thinking skills can be seen from the average of N-Gain in the experimental class with 0.32 (medium category) and in the control category with 0.05 (low category). The experimental and control class have different creative thinking skills significantly different fluency, flexibility, novelty, and detail. It can be concluded that quantitative project-based protein testing using local materials can improve students’ creative thinking skills. 71% of total students feel that quantitative project-based protein testing using local materials make them more creative in doing a practicum in the laboratory.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) explore students’ learning achievement based on scientific inquiry learning on the materials of reproductive material cells reflected on pre-test and post-test; (2) obtain the achievements of scientific inquiry activity based on the different time of problem distribution; and, (3) analyze students' ability in scientific inquiry activities based on the indicators of scientific inquiry in the different time of problem distribution. The design was research & development. The participants were two classes of PGMI. The research data were pretest and posttest obtained from close-ended test and scientific inquiry activities obtained from student worksheet. Research shows that learning outcomes of students in each class increases, though there is no significant difference in the increase indicated in the learning outcomes between the two classes. The technique of distributing students’ work in different time influence the students' scientific inquiry activity. Communication is a dominant indicator of the successful scientific inquiry activities in both classes. Using the data and creating an image are other indicators affecting the scientific activity.

Abstract

Impulse momentum theorem is one of the fundamental principles of physics, especially in mechanics. Therefore, students’ understanding of impulse and momentum will contribute to their success in learning physics. This study exposed common students difficulties in solving problems related to impulse and momentum. The subjects consisted of 175 students of a Senior High School in Malang, 70 students of grade XI who recently learned about impulse and momentum and 105 students of grade XII who relearned the topic for national examination preparation. The data were gathered using multiple-choice test with open explanation and confidence rating scale. The study concluded that the students’ difficulties were not only caused by their lack understanding of the concepts but also by their deficiency in using vectors.
