Abstract

Students’ difficulties commonly are analyzed based on misconception theory. This paper aimed to analyze students’ difficulties on the rotational dynamic based on resource theory. The subject of research consisted of 108 first-year undergraduate students of Physics Education, State University of Malang. Firstly, the students were asked to solve 15 multiple-choice questions and gave open explanation. We then implemened a constant comparative method to identify and categorize some resources that students employed in solving several problems that most the students failed to respond correctly. The results indicated that the students had difficulties in solving problems related to the torque and the equilibrium of rigid body. The students’ difficulties were not merely caused by the lack of correct knowledge. Instead, they have the correct knowledge or resources but they activated them on inappropriate context. The students will be successfully used the resources to solve problems if they activated them in the right context.

Abstract

Biology is a leading science and a foundation in everyday life for all people. Biology student teachers need to be equipped with biological literacy and critical thinking skills in order to teach biology in the future. This research is aimed at determining the effect of socio-biological case-based learning on biological literacy and critical thinking skills of biology student teachers compared with the traditional learning (lecture-based learning). Socio-biological case-based learning is a model of problem-based learning by placing biological cases as a problem to be explained and solved through a series of investigative activities. This research was a quasi-experimental conducted at the Department of Biology, Universitas Negeri Malang. The research samples were the first year students who programmed the General Biology course, consisting of 29 students as a control group and 33 students as experimental group. This research was conducted in September-December 2015. The data of biological literacy and critical thinking were collected from pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using ANCOVA test. The research showed that there was a significant difference of biological literacy and critical thinking skills between the students taught by using socio-biological case-based learning and those taught by using lecture-based learning. The research indicated that the socio-biological case-based learning could enhance the biological literacy and critical thinking skills of biology students teachers.

Abstract

Many recent studies have reported that feedback plays a very important role in students’ learning outcomes. However, currently, feedback has not been utilized by lecturers and students in the learning process effectively. This study aimed to explore the impact of feedback as a soft scaffolding in the ongoing assessment of Quantum Physics class for the students as prospective Physics teachers. A quasi-experimental design non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group was used to examine the effectiveness of feedback based on ongoing assessment. The results of the study revealed that students who received feedback based on metacognitive and social constructivism on studying Quantum Physics showed better average results compared to students who received traditional feedback based on the cognitivism in the form of correction.

Abstract

Optical wave courses at the Department of Science discuss waves and optics. The purpose of this study is to describe the problem-solving ability of students in optical wave courses. The method used is quantitative descriptive with one group pre-test post-test design. Method of data collection involves a test given to students before and after the student worksheet was provided in the course of optical waves. This study showed an increase in scores experienced by as many as 15 students. This shows that the problem-solving ability of students has increased.

Abstract

This classroom action research was conducted to analyze the development of the students’ inquiry abilities in science learning by a learning model of mindmap educative by using game observation normatively (Megono). The study was conducted in three cycles. In each cycle, the students were divided into five groups, each groups consisted of seven students. Each group was mandated to observe and to analyze the images/photos. After the image observations, they were asked to discuss, write and compile the information into a concept map.  One of the students was act as a representative of the group in a game of observation. Data were obtained through the pre-test, post-test, and observation by the observers as well as from the photo and video recording. The results showed that the students’ inquiry ability increased by 63.27% at the end of the cycle. At the initial conditions, the ability of the student was low (0.49). After the first cycle, it increased to 0.63 (medium), and then increased to 0.68 (moderate) on the second cycle, and finally it increased to 0.80 (high) in the third cycle. The average increase in every aspect was 68.59%.  The highest inquiry capability was achieved in aspects of reasoning amounted to 89.29 (very high). It was suggested to use the observation games fairly and needed more time adjustment to obtain higher learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research intended to understand the effect of Isomorphic Physics (FORFIS) application to the analogical transfer and self-diagnosis skill of high school students. The use of Android applications in physics learning has given a considerable influence in improving the various abilities of learners. However, no one has measured the influence of the Android application on the analogical transfer and self-diagnosis skill of students, especially in physics subject. This research type was experimental research of pre-test post-test control group design. The subjects involved in this research were 1 physics teacher and 87 students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang; 28 students in the experimental class I (G1), 35 students in the experimental class II (G2), and 24 students in the experimental class III (G3). The data obtained were analyzed using the ANOVA Mixed Design method in combination with General Linear Model. The results of the analysis show that the FORFIS application could improve 0.912 or 91.2% of the students’ analogical transfer and self-diagnosis skill. Therefore, the FORFIS application employed in physics learning had a great influence on the improvement of analogical transfer and self-diagnosis skill of high school students.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to strengthen characters and ecopreneurship of students who enrolled in science, environment, technology, and society (SETS) course. The focus of the students’ characters in this study included responsibility, discipline, creative and innovative, commitment, and cooperative. This course supports the students to develop ecopreneurship to create products from organic and inorganic waste treatments. To achieve the purpose of this research, a teaching and learning package including syllabus, lesson plan, and assessment criteria were developed using the Research and Development (R&D) method. A total of 42 science education undergraduates and two experts were involved in this research. The data were collected through validation sheets, observation sheets, and assessment of students’ecopreneurship products. The validation results showed that the developed teaching and learning package categorized as very good. In this course, six stages of learning were implemented including identifying a problem, making a plan, conducting an observation, collecting information, exhibiting a product, and writing ideas. The observation results showed that the overall developed teaching and learning package was effective to support the students’ learning in each of the six stages. Moreover, the improvement in students’ scores on the focused characters was observed. At the end of the course, the students’ ecopreneurship products were also accomplished. Nine of the products were made of organic waste, while the two of them were recycled from inorganic waste. Thus, it concluded that the course of science, environment, technology, and society could strengthen the students’ characters and ecopreneurship.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve the mastery of knowledge, attitudes, and skills of students in disaster mitigation in prone areas of volcanic eruptions. The subjects of this research were fifth (V) graders in three elementary schools situated in prone areas of Merapi volcano eruption in Srumbung subdistrict, Magelang regency, Central Java. The data collected in this study consisted of disaster knowledge, attitude, and mitigation practice. The data of disaster knowledge were obtained through a test and analyzed using t-test and N-gain. The attitude data were collected using questionnaire with an improvement analysis using N-gain. The mitigation practice data were collected through observation and analyzed by descriptive percentage for attitudes and skills. The research results showed that the implementation of thematic learning of Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) integrated with local wisdom was able to reconstruct and increase the disaster management knowledge. This can be seen from the N-gain score obtained by each elementary school which the highest Gain Score was 0.46 and included in the medium category. There was an enhancement attitude toward disaster having the highest Gain Score was 0.77. All disaster mitigation indicators were successfully mastered by more than 70 percent of the students, who were in the good category (70≥X≤85) in all three elementary schools implementing the thematic learning of SETS integrated with local wisdom.
