Abstract

Science generic skill is very important for students to solve every problem in learning processes and daily life. The purpose of this research was to explore the students’ needs of the chemistry module based on search, solve, create, and share (SSCS) to increase science generic skills. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. There were 61 students in XI Grade from two Senior High Schools at Surakarta. The data were collected using questionnaires sheets, interviews, and materials analysis. The research revealed that the module and teaching materials used in the schools have not empowered the science generic skills maximally; also, the teachers remained to adopt discourse method which resulted in a teacher-centered learning. Such learning made the learning activities seemed monotonous, uninteresting, and less motivated the students in building concepts. Thus, the students required alternative teaching materials to increase their science generic skills. In sum, it is necessary to develop a chemistry module on the atomic structure which oriented to the SSCS.

Abstract

This study explored effectiveness of Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) strategy to enhance concept comprehension of junior high school students in hydrostatic pressure and Archimedes law concepts. Subjects of this study were 31 students of a private junior high school in East Flores in even semester year 2015/2016. By mixed-method design, this study concluded that (1) average score of concept comprehension was significantly increase (p = 0.000) from pre-test (36.77) to post-test (63.26) with strong category of effect size (1.62), and moderate category of N-gain (0.40); (2) learning was also succeed identifying some misconceptions and remedied it. Those misconceptions were: (a) hydrostatic pressure was influenced by liquid volume and or the shape of the container, (b) an object was floated for there was air within, (c) a sunken object had no buoyant force, and (d) the magnitude of buoyant force was equal to liquid volume; (3) some of common problems around the students in applying hydrostatics concept and buoyant force were as follow (a) related to mathematical representation of hydrostatic force Ph = P0 + ?gh, most all students interpreted h as the depth measured from the bottom of the liquid column (not from the surface of the liquid as it should be), (b) related to buoyant force, the problem depended on the context where the question given. In context of immovable objects in a certain fluid, almost all student was hard comparing buoyant force magnitude to the weight. In context of sliding object in liquid, almost all students failed to explain the object position to its buoyant force.

Abstract

One way to improve students’ chemistry literacy which is demanded in the modernization of modern technology-based chemistry learning is by studying ionic liquids. Low level of scientific literacy of students in Indonesia as revealed in the PISA in 2012 was the main reason of the research. Ionic liquids-based technology are necessary to be applied as a context for learning chemistry because: (1) the attention of the scientific an technology community in the use of ionic liquids as a new generation of green solvent, electrolyte material and fluidic engineering in recent years becomes larger, in line with the strong demands of the industry for the provision of new materials that are reliable, safe, and friendly for various purposes; (2) scientific explanations related to the context of the ionic liquid contains a lot of facts, concepts, principles, laws, models and theories can be used to reinforce the learning content as a media to develop thinking skill (process/competence) as demanded by PISA; (3) The modern technology-based ionic liquid can also be used as a discourse to strengthen scientific attitude. The process of synthesis of ionic liquid involves fairly simple organic reagents, so it deserves to be included in the chemistry subject in school.
