Abstract

The Bali Arts Festival, locally known as Pesta Kesenian Bali (PKB), is an annual colossal festival of performing arts intended to preserve and explore cultural arts, as can be observed from the variety of programs performed, the number of artists involved and the number of viewers. This study analyzes how the public space at the Bali Arts Centre is managed not only to perform a professional and high-quality festival but also to make artists, entrepreneurs and viewers feel comfortable in enjoying it. The data were obtained through interviews, library research, and observation of the 2023 PKB and analyzed using the theory of public space proposed by Gottdiener and Lefebvre. The study concludes that the government has realized that improving the public space and the Arts Centre supporting facilities proves that public space management is as important as the arts curatorial process to present the quality of the PKB and public viewing experiences.

Abstract

In recent years, artists from various cultures have increasingly drawn on the spiritual and philosophical principles of ancient tantra. This article explores the influence of ancient tantric traditions on contemporary Balinese arts. It employed an innovative art-based research methodology utilizing qualitative, interpretive, and practice-based research methods. These included observation, interviews, and document analysis while integrating theoretical frameworks, symbolic perspectives, and theo-aesthetic considerations. The research reveals how artists transform and reinterpret tantric themes in their work, highlighting the complex relationship between modern expressions and ancient inspirations. Balinese art, as the study shows, achieves beauty by blending opposites, such as masculine and feminine qualities, through the concept of lanang-wadon. By examining this topic, the research provides valuable insights into the evolving relationship between spirituality, creativity, and cultural exchange in Bali and the interconnected world. This study underscores the dynamic interplay between ancient traditions and contemporary artistic practices, showcasing a unique fusion that enriches both the art and its cultural context.

Abstract

Mitra Bali Fair Trade is a business entity that collaborates with craftsmen to implement fair trade practices in the export of Balinese handicraft commodities. Despite the potential, the effectiveness of the entity is affected by craftsmen’s lack of understanding of fair trade. Therefore, this study aimed to discuss craftsmen’s understanding as small producers regarding fair trade principles as well as their benefits. The study procedures were conducted in Gianyar Regency among craftsmen working with Mitra Bali using a qualitative method and a phenomenological approach. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews with seven informants accompanied by relevant literature studies. The results showed that craftsmen understood the ten principles of fair trade, and the implementation of fair trade could bring social welfare to the participants. The results of this study aim to contribute to the academic discourse regarding fair trade and address the practical issue of its implementation in Bali.

Abstract

The Bali Provincial Government collaborates with desa adat (customary village) to enhance their strength and resilience, notably through the enactment of Province of Bali Regulation Number 4 of 2019. However, excessive regulatory impact may diverge from this goal. This study explores the ideological framework shaping interactions between desa adat and the government post-regulation. Using a qualitative methodology, data were collected through literature review, observations, and in-depth interviews. The findings draw on theories of hegemony, ideology, discourse, and the power of knowledge. Hidden ideologies of power, capital, and religion influence these interactions. The regulation's uniform framework on diverse desa adat leads to resistance and inefficiency, reflecting hegemonic control and the use of ideology and knowledge to legitimize power. This article contributes to developing legislation that empowers the desa adat while maintaining their unique characteristics.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the traditional cultural practices of pasantian reading clubs in facing globality and subjective perceptions of modernity, transformation and change. Pasantian members sing and interpret conventional Balinese texts, thus playing a crucial role in maintaining the artistic and ideological identity of Bali Hindu people. However, engagement in these practices is significantly challenged by rapid sociological changes, which have led to a notable decline in the number of people involved in pasantian. The study focused on understanding how pasantian interact with notions of globality and how these groups can be strengthened to preserve local cultural and ideological values. A qualitative approach employed ethnographic methods such as participant observation and in-depth interviews to explore the practices of pasantian in terms of continuity and change. Findings highlight the importance of practitioners of traditional art forms in negotiating the local-global nexus and suggest strategies for revitalizing pasantian groups.

Abstract

Shopping for souvenirs is often considered an essential part of the travel experience for many tourists. This study examines the relationship between place attachment and shopping motivation as independent variables, shopping satisfaction as a dependent variable, and shopping experience as a mediator. The findings indicate that place attachment may influence shopping pleasure indirectly, through the mediating role of shopping experience. In contrast, shopping satisfaction is affected by shopping motivation both directly and indirectly. A sample size of 308 respondents who had participated in tourism shopping at Sukawati Art Market, Gianyar, Bali, was used to validate the proposed model. The validation was conducted using PLS-SEM through outer and inner models with SmartPLS 4, using a 1-tailed test. The study employed a quantitative approach and collected data through a survey questionnaire. The results of this research hold theoretical and practical implications for increasing the understanding of shopping satisfaction of domestic tourists.

Abstract

This article attempts to look deeper into the Udayana School of Kajian Budaya compared to the spell of British Cultural Studies to understand both modes and critical discourses in debate. It hopes to widen the horizon on the plurality of cultural studies versions existing beyond Britain, the United States and Europe; specifically the Udayana School of Kajian Budaya in Bali and broadly in Indonesia. Hence, the authors conducted a literature search to compile relevant publications, interviewed Kajian Budaya lecturers and alumni, and employed critical interpretive analysis to the data. The study indicates formation of the British and the Udayana School variants were influenced by critical theory of the Frankfurt School and postmodernism ideas of French and American thinkers, which critiqued institutions of modernity, capitalist society, positivism in scientific inquiry, ‘classical’ enlightenment thought, and the culture industry. However, the Udayana School of Kajian Budaya exhibits distinctiveness in its study areas, approach and paradigm.

Abstract

While States have traditionally formed the focus of International Relations studies, the contributions of local government actors have become increasingly important in both influencing and responding to the forces of global politics, including in the Global South. In this vein, this preliminary study explores the practice of the local government in initiating sister province cooperation in Bali, Indonesia. This study uses three conceptual frameworks: paradiplomacy, sustainable development, and critical discourse analysis. Primary data were collected through interviews with relevant local government officials in Bali and secondary data were gathered from academic articles, official websites, and online news items. This paper identified two most prominent sectors of this cooperation, namely: tourism and culture. These two areas align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While clearly connected with governmental and international goals, challenges remain in implementing sister province cooperation, achieving continuity among the parties involved, and dealing with funding limitations.

Abstract

This article examines the influence of local culture on tourist loyalty, focusing on a case study in Bali, Indonesia. Through a quantitative approach, this study uses structural equation modelling (SEM) with smart partial least squares (PLS) to analyse data from a survey involving 276 tourists. This study identifies and measures the direct impact of two independent variables, namely local ‘cultural richness’, and ‘cultural interaction’, on destination loyalty, with ‘tourist satisfaction’ as the mediating variable and ‘previous travel experience’ as the moderating variable. The results show that local cultural richness and cultural interaction have a significant influence on tourist satisfaction, which in turn affects destination loyalty. Nonetheless, previous travel experience has proven not to moderate the relationship between tourist satisfaction towards destination loyalty (? = -0.021). These findings provide valuable insights for destination managers and policymakers in developing marketing strategies that focus on local culture to increase tourist loyalty.
