Abstract

AbstractThe Indonesian language has developed very fast inmodernizing its vocabulary by taking in many influencesfrom foreign languages including Arabic, Dutch, English,Sanskrit, Tamil and Chinese. Similar tendencies areapparent in local languages, taking vocabulary in limitednumbers from limited sources. Balinese, for instance, hastaken loan words in classical and traditional religiousmatters from Sanskrit through Old Javanese and haslet itself be influenced almost exclusively by Englishfor modern vocabulary. Meanwhile Indonesian, whichoriginated from Malay, has developed progressively froman early history, such as Sriwijaya kingdom, to becoming acoastal linguafranca across the country and the declarationof the language as the national language. Nowadays thegovernment and educated people do very little to controlinfluence on the language. A careful academic examinationin relation to microlinguistic and macrolinguistic systems, cultural identity and nationality should be consideredseriously when new foreign words are taken as part ofthe Indonesian vocabulary. Otherwise, in the long run, thenational language will lose its identity and spoken andwritten Indonesian will be massively shaped by Englishelements. This kind of tendency has been very widespreadin recent years.

Abstract

This research aims to study the revitalization of quotidian ties as a medium of establishing social reharmonization between the Balinese Hindu diaspora and Sasak Moslem in Mataram city. This revitalization was carried out post-conflict between the two ethnic groups in a number of areas. This phenomenon is related to the representation of local wisdom as posessing noble values instilled by the ancestors of the two ethnic groups toward realizing mutualistic communication and interaction. This study was designed using an interpretative-descriptive approach in order to conduct an in-depth analysis of the research focus. This study found innovations relating to the implementation of quotidian ties, specifically through the revitalization of individual and collective consciousness based on quotidian ties, the strengthening of multicultural ties between the two ethnic communities, the valorization of local wisdom involving the participation of different ethnic groups, and the contestation of cultural capital in the implementation of adat and religious practices. Recommendations of this study are to build cultural awareness through attitudes that mutually recognize and accept differences. Keywords: revitalization, quotidian ties, Balinese Hindu, Sasak Moslem, social reharmonization

Abstract

Karangasem City is one of the heritage cities of Karangasem Kingdom in Bali which has a typical spatial layout and society life. The society of Karangasem City is divided into several classes based on the catur wangsa (social group) which is presumed affecting the realization of spatial layout of Karangasem City physically. It is interesting to conduct a deeper investigation on it to identify the effect of the system, so that it can be used as an input to manage and develop Karangasem City in the future. In investigating the effect, the method used in this study is qualitative method with inductive-qualitative technique and three data collection techniques, they are field observation, in-depth interview with purposive sampling, and literature study. Based on the results of the study, it is understood that the catur wangsa system took part in affecting the spatial layout of Karangasem City in which divided the city area into three layers of concentric circles according to the level of social classes that inhibits each of the layers. It also shows the suitability of Karangasem City spatial layout with the tri mandala (three spaces) concept which divides the area of Karangasem City into three layers.

Abstract

AbstractThis article discusses evolution and present problems of Ubud as a tourist town in the context of Bali tourismdevelopment. Ubud has always provided an alternativevision of what tourism in Bali could be. The metaphor of an Open Fortress provides a useful lens for looking at Ubudover the past century. “Tourism” is in Ubud has always been closely linked to an expatriate community and other international economic activities. Tourism is not a oneway process – it is always a dialectical process between local communities and visitors (as Michel Picard told uslong ago). This process is always changing and in Ubud ithas now entered a new phase – involving a tourism/expatnexus that is quite disconnected from local community andculture.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conserve the agricultural culture and to review the symbolic meaning and local wisdom in certain agricultural rituals. This research is conducted in Subak Kedua Pasedahan Yeh Lauh, Peguyangan Kangin Village, West Denpasar, Bali. Data is collected using the methods of interview and literature review. From the data collected, there are twenty four ritual steps found that should be performed by the farmers in Bali. Those indicate farmers’ religious nature and appreciation of their cultural tradition. Each ritual from sowing to harvesting contains symbolic meanings and cultural values embraced as the guidance in farming life. From the analyses concerning its ritual and tools used, it is concluded that the symbolic meaning of ritual discourse performed by the farmers are: (1) expressing gratitude to God for all abundant harvest grace; (2) asking permission for farming to the motherland as the manifestation of God in term of the ruler of the land; (3) asking for safety for having a successful agriculture to God (Goddess Sri); (4) offerings to the rice field rulers to be kept away from pests that damage plants; (5) keeping the environmental balance –in the philosophy of Hindu society in Bali, it is one of Tri Hita Karana’s best practices.

Abstract

AbstractActivities pertaining to development of spatial planningpolicy, its execution, its evaluation and review in spatialdevelopment at a national, provincial, and regencial level inIndonesia is first mandated by the Indonesian State RegulationNo. 24/1992. In line with the instigation the State LocalAutonomy Policy, this regulation has then been substituted bythe Indonesia State Regulation No. 26/2007 on Spatial Planning. For its implementation, this regulation is later completed withthe release of the Indonesian State Regulation No 26/2009.Conformance with these regulatory products as well as theIndonesian State Regulation No. 5/1960 on Land Reform, havegenerated problems, which are different to those of othercountries.Problems relating to spatial planning in Bali are morecomplex compared to those generally encountered by otherprovinces in Indonesia. As an illustration here is a list ofspatial predicaments that Bali has been faced with for the lastfour decades: dispute over land tittles situated in both socioculturallyand environmentally strategic zones; problemsrelating policy development; ambiguity in regard to the integrityof each regulatory product imposed on the society; provisionof financial requirements as well as provision of adequateexpertises required to bring policy into its implementation;development of spatial database system; conflicting interests inland development; economical aspects; socio cultural concerns;environmental protection; politics, demography; security andsafety. In terms of policy implementation, Bali has problems withpermit and public participation. And in term of control, Bali hasdifficulties in regard to the roles of each local government, thepublic and its various social groups. This paper emphasises that the problems stated above canbe approached using a local to national strategy. The proposedstrategy is to be excecuted by providing every community witha definitive framework, that is completed with a detailed policyattached to every single spatial zone exist at a village level.Govenrment at a district, regencial as well as provincial levelsare also equipped with detailed governing functions and rolesto ensure that they are fully informed and have the capacity toimplement the imposed spatial plan adequately. Within thisstrategy, the main controling position will be held by the public, medias, as well as other parties who have great commitmentsand concerns in protecting Bali’s natural environment, itsculture, and promoting growth and development activities thatconsciously embrace local wisdoms within the dynamic of theIndonesian State.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the netizen perceptions related to Balinese family planning (KB Krama Bali) discourse on Facebook. Unlike general principle of family planning in Indonesia which limit family to have two children, in Bali the allowing number is four. To achieve the study objective, the method used is qualitative. The study show that: 1) There are variations in the coverage of the KB Krama Bali discourse on Facebook by several online media, seen from the title and intensity of the news. The variety of news coverage is inseparable from the internal policies and external influences of the media; 2) Most of the attitude of netizens towards the KB Krama Bali discourse is agree (47%). This shows that some of the netizens were enthusiastic about the existence of the KB Krama Bali, indicating that Balinese cultural values ??have a more important role than other values ??related to child ownership; 3) Netizens expectations of the KB Krama Bali discourse vary, but only 3 things stand out, namely no further expectations, incentives, and priorities in other programs. From this expectation, it is identified that economic and cultural values ??have a vital role in children's values. Keywords: KB krama Bali, perception, social media, facebook

Abstract

In this article I discuss a Kamasan painting in the Charlie Sayer’s collection in the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. I begin by explaining the way in which the painter has organised the design of his painting to tell the story of the Brayuts, a commoner Balinese family, and to draw attention to important aspects of family life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the lower part of the painting we see the Brayut family celebrating the festivals of Galungan and Kuningan and in the topmost sequence of scenes the circumstances in which the head of the family, Pan Brayut, abdicates his religious and customary duties on behalf of the family in favour of his youngest son Ketut Subaya. I argue further that the painter draws attention to a radical distiction between the roles of men and women in family life in this period and to his manifest interest in illustrating the virtue of Pan Brayut, the male head of the family.

Abstract

This research examines the habitus creation in the neighborhood of Al-Amin which is located at Banjar Sanglah, Denpasar City. This neighborhood evidently is able to actualize the inter-religious harmony since 1970 until now. In the related study, the concept of habitus from Pierre Bourdieu with formulation (Habitus x Capital) + Field = Practice was applied, while adopted the ethnography method. Through the conducted study, Bourdieu’s concept of habitus was able to explain the cognitive structure of various actors who play an essential role in the creation of the Al-Amin neighborhood, starting from the system of symbolic capital disposition, social capital, economic capital and cultural capital. Furthermore, the continuous harmony in the neighborhood of Al-Amin is due to its strong social and cultural capital. However, the harmony is inseparable from the framework between majority with minority, thus the character of social capital and especially the cultural capital in the neighborhood of Al-Amin tend to coopt other forms of capital.
