Abstract

Limit was to basic concept of derivative. The results of previous research found that learners have obstacles in understanding the limit function, consequently, the occurrence of difficulties and mistakes learners understand the concept and derived principles. This study aims to determine the obstacles of learners in applying derived properties. The approach of this research is qualitative by applying task-based interview with subject of 10 students selected by certain condition from 70 students in Mathematics Education Study Program of University of Bengkulu. The researcher is the main instrument in this research which is guided by the interview sheet and duty sheet. Data analysis was performed by genetic decomposition analysis. The results of this study indicate that the barriers of learners in applying analytic concepts and properties analytically include, the tangent line almost parallel to the y-axis, the break point (cusp) at x = -4, the second derivative, the extreme point, the emergence of contradictions, asymptotes flat, and do not understand conceptually. To overcome the obstacles of learners in understanding the concept and the nature of derivatives and its application, it is suggested to apply the mathematics learning model based on the extended triad++.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the high-level thinking. Mathematics learning in globalization era usually uses critical thinking in solving problems. Mathematics is always thought as the difficult one to be learnt. This research will describe students critical thinking profile in solving the function of compositions through collaborative learning. This reseach can be used as the reference for teachers to recognize students critical thinking profile in their class, and also it can be used to motivate students to enhance their critical thinking ability. The critical thinking criterias are focus, reason, inference, situation, and overview. That criterias include eleven indicators. The type of collaborative learning in this research is Learning Together (LT). This research is descriptive with qualitative approach. The data were collected by documentation, observation, test, and interview. The subjects of this research are six students who are two high-achiever students, two medium-achiever students, and two low-achiever students from one of senior high school at Jember. High-achiever students can achieve all criterias of critical thinking and they dominate the role in learning and teaching activity. The medium-achiever students only fulfill focus in the first and second indicator, reason in the second, and inference, situation, clarity, and overview in the second indicator and also can join in the collaborative learning. While, the low-achiever students can only look to other students without get engaged actively in collaborative learning and only achieve focus in the first and second indicators of situation.

Abstract

Mathematics learning activities would not be separated from the problem of mathematics. The  mathematical will be a problems if  in solving  problem  students does not immediately know the answer, but it takes time to think what steps should be taken to resolve the issue. In fact, many students are good at solving mathematical problems often use smart ways beyond of expectations and habits, thereby providing a short and accurate answer. in contrast to the students who have moderate or low mathematical ability, the way that used to solve the problem tend to give answers  lengthy and sometimes less accurate, although many low of  students math skills who have difficulties to find a way to solve mathematical problems. It showed that, there is a correlation between mathematical abilities of the students with intuition that students use in solving mathematical problems. On the other hand, the gender factor influencing the way to gain knowledge of mathematics. The influence of the gender factor in the process of conceptualization showed that gender may affect the use of intuition in understanding mathematical concepts. The aims of this study is to determine the differences between women's and men’s intuition on vocational students who have a high level of mathematical ability, medium and low in mathematical problem solving. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive research  without the use of statistical analysis. the population is a whole class X SMK 1 Banda Aceh by taking six subjects consisted of 3  male and 3 female subjects at various levels, through learning achievement tests and consultation with subject teachers.
