The unemployment issue has opened the eyes of academic scientists and government. These things give the impression that the teaching and learning needs to be improved. One of the strategies that have been suggested by the Malaysia Education Blueprint (Higher Education) is to use experience-based approach. Teaching methods and adventure-based learning is a method characterized by experiential learning and inquiry learning. It is seen as having the characteristics of improving the skills of the 21st century in terms of leadership. The main objective of this study was to examine the effects of adventure-based learning through walks, explore race and flying fox in learning statistics (mathematics) against the student leadership skills. This study will employ a quantitative approach research using a quasi-experimental pre and post-test non-equivalent control group design. The sample for this study will be selected randomly at one Malaysia Teacher Training Institute and will be involved semester two students in Program Persediaan Ijazah Sarjana Muda Perguruan. Three main instruments will be used in this study such as the fundamental statistic achievement test, critical thinking test and leadership assessment questionnaire. The sample will be divided into two groups: the experimental groups will undergo an adventure-based learning approach while control groups remain to the conventional approach. The results of this study are expected to provide an alternative teaching approach that can be implemented by lecturers, teachers and educators in practicing the teaching and learning for the 21st century.

Mathematical representation is one of the mathematical higher order thinking skills, as a tool or way of thinking in communicating mathematical ideas. Referring to a research about the inconsistency of a mathematical communication profile involving gender differences and the phenomenon of more female students than men right now, there appears to be an allegation that there is a connection between gender differences and students mathematical representation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the improvement of students' mathematical representation capability in terms of gender differences. Subjects in this research were students of class X of High School in Medan, Indonesia, consisting of 13 men and 19 women. The research instrument is a mathematical representation test consisting of 4 questions. Data analysis to find out how the category of improvement of students’ mathematical representation, using index of N-gain. The results of the research are: (1) the improvement of mathematical representation ability in the lower and middle categories of male students is higher than female students, (2) there is no male students have high category mathematical representation, but there are female students have high category mathematical representation abilities, and (3) the ability of representation to make mathematical models and explain the verbal language of male students is higher than female students. While the representational ability of making tables and drawing female students is higher than male students. The implication of the research is needs to do deeper research to see the relationship of mathematical representation ability with the students' mathematical ability profile.

The ability of representation is one of the important components to develop students' thinking skills, because this capability is instrumental in helping students to transform abstract ideas into real idea and it can train students to improve problem solving skills with a variety of forms including pictures, diagrams, mathematical expressions, or words or written text. One model of learning that increases the ability of the mathematical representation is a learning model of problem-based learning. This research aims to: 1) determine a mathematical representation increased ability of students taught with problem based learning models 2) the interaction between the learning model of problem-based learning and grouping of students to increase the ability of the mathematical representation. This research is a quantitative research with an experimental method, that has pretest-posttest group design. The population was all students of class X SMA UnggulPidie Jaya by samples of two classes, namely class X3 as an experimental class and class X2 as the control class. The data collection was done by using test. Then analyzed by t -test and ANOVA at the 0.05 significance level after testing prerequisites are met. Based on the analysis we can conclude that: 1) to improve the mathematical representation of students who applied learning model of problem based learning is better than an increase in the ability of the mathematical representation of students who received conventional learning. 2) there is no interaction between the learning model and grouping of students to increase the ability of mathematical representation.
