Abstract

This article aims to reveal the political thoughts of Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im regarding the concept of a secular state. The material object of this study is An-Na'im's political thought in the form of a secular state concept which is reviewed using epistemology as its formal object. The results of this study explain that: first, the basic assumption of An-Na'im's political thought is a post-secularist worldview. Second, the paradigm is anthropocentric positivism. Third, the framework is constitutionalism, human rights, and citizenship. All these three are used by An-Na'im primarily to make sharia relevant to the context of a modern state. Viewed from an Islamic perspective, the epistemology of An-Na'im's political thought is problematic because after all, post-secularism is still rooted in the principle of separation of state and religion. Making post-secularism a basic assumption is a form of confusion in perspective. Making anthropocentric positivism a paradigm also means placing human knowledge as the main truth. Likewise, framing sharia within the framework of constitutionalism, human rights, and citizenship is a step that has the potential to ignore aspects of the maslahat contained in sharia.

Abstract

Hermeneutics has changed the paradigm of the study of contemporary Islamic thought towards the direction of Islamic science, placing modern Islamic issues into the discourse of theodiplomacy. Many modernist scholars have initiated an overhaul of the concept of "soar skyward" Islam, offering through hermeneutics a "down-to-earth" idea of Islam. Hermeneutics has given birth to various controversies through the use of the methods "to explain," "to interpret," and "to say," ignoring the approaches of al-shadaf (charismatic study), al-lubab (essence study), tahqiq (ensuring the exploration of the position of words), and tadqiq (comparing to the opinions of competent scholars). This study was conducted using qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The results showed that hermeneutics has initiated the occurrence of rereading, reinterpretation, rethinking, renewing, and rebuilding to strive for adjustments toward the new Islamic order. Therefore, the existence of Hermeneutics does not make calculations of right and wrong, strong and weak, black and white, and Islam-West in every interpretation of the Qur'an. It's just that the interpretation of modernity issues carried out by the approach of Islamization of science and applied Islamology giving birth to various worldview controversies such as Progressive Islam, pluralist Islam, humanist Islam, and reverse Islam.

Abstract

Islamic epistemological discourse, such as polygamy, contains a variety of opinions (multi-opinion). Polygamy is a debate among Muslim scholars. Some argue that polygamy is permissible, while others prohibit it. On the other hand, the Qur’an and hadith allow polygamy as long as certain conditions are met. This article aims to explain the epistemology of Muhammad Syahrur's Islamic thought and its implications for the study of polygamy hadith. This is qualitative research based on library data reference sources. The research findings show that: First, the study of Muhammad Syahrur's Islamic epistemology is based on three important aspects, namely the condition of being (al-kainūnah), the condition of process (As-Sairūrah) and the condition of becoming (As-Hairūrah). Second, Muhammad Syahrur's thoughts are based on the logic of historical aspects of the past which refer to the polygamy hadith regarding the conditions for polygamy, namely 1) a polygamous woman is both a widow and a mother (having children); and 2) a man who practices polygamy must fairly provide physical and spiritual support to their wives and children. This thinking is based on Syahrur's scientific epistemology in constructing religious studies. Third, Muhammad Syahrur's scientific epistemology is influenced by four aspects, namely mihwar regarding philosophy, theological, anthropological, and naturalistic regarding environmental or natural conditions.

Abstract

This study agrees that the theory of anthropocentrism environmental ethics has a weakness because it places human interests as a moral standard, but this research disagrees with the view that this weakness is influenced by religion. Conversely, religion is an important factor for the improvement of the theory of anthropocentrism environmental ethics. This study uses a qualitative method where data is obtained through tracking and reading various literature. The collected data were analyzed with hermeneutic and heuristic theories. This study found that the weakness of the theory of anthropocentrism environmental ethics lies in its scope which is only in the interests of humans. This weakness is seen as influenced by religious understanding that places humans as the center of the universe so that it gives rise to exploitative attitudes in humans. This view is wrong because in religion (Islam) humans are indeed given a high position, but with a great responsibility to protect nature. The reconstruction of this view leads to a new form of environmental ethics, namely theo-anthropocentrism in which it is hoped that humans can act wisely on the universe as God's representatives in the world.

Abstract

The value of ukhuwah is often understood as a teaching of brotherhood that applies to fellow groups or religions only. The main focus in this study is the values of the Ukhuwwah Trilogy: ukhuwwah Islamiyyah (brotherhood among Muslims), ukhuwwah basyariyyah (brotherhood among mankind), as well as ukhuwwah wathaniyah (brotherhood in national bonds). This research is a literature study using descriptive methods and a contextual interpretation approach. The result provides that the verses of the Qur’an talking about ukhuwah has implications for the meaning of social relations which are not only about teachings and rules relating to fellow Muslims, but also the values of brotherhood among human beings which are an important factor in creating internal and inter-religious harmony. So that the values contained in the ukhuwah verses can be used as guidelines in deradicalization efforts. These verses also have implications for meaning as guidelines for living side by side by establishing good communication with anyone based on humanity (basyariyyah). The main goal is also to maintain good relations between citizens based on nationalism.
