Abstract

Humans have an important role in protecting nature or the environment; therefore, environmental ethics are needed to preserve the environment. The Adiwiyata program can instill environmental ethics in school communities, especially students. This research was conducted to describe environmental ethics as reflected in the behavior of elementary school students around the school canteen. The indicators of environmental ethics observed around the canteen included: (1) responsibility for the environment, (2) solidarity with the environment, (3) compassion and care for nature or the environment, (4) not damaging nature or the environment, and (5) living simply and in harmony with nature. This type of research was descriptive research, and the research instruments were observation and interviews. The results showed that environmental ethics had not yet been reflected in students’ behavior. Student awareness in protecting the environment was still low, as seen from the lack of environmental ethics in their behavior. Schools should pay more attention to environmental ethics in students’ behavior and implement activities that can instill or enhance environmental ethics among students.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low level of students’ narrative essay writing skills. Several factors contributed to this condition, including students’ low interest and boredom in writing activities, limited vocabulary mastery, difficulties in word choice and spelling, and inadequate use of punctuation. As a result, students’ essays tended to be very simple, generally consisting of only one to two sentences, and lacked coherence between sentences, which prevented the formation of well-structured paragraphs. Students also experienced confusion in using punctuation marks such as periods, commas, question marks, and exclamation points correctly. This study aimed to determine the effect of using flash card media on the narrative essay writing skills of third-grade students at SDN 188 Pekanbaru. The research employed a quasi-experimental method using a nonequivalent control group design. The population of this study consisted of third-grade students at SDN 188 Pekanbaru, with Class IIIA (40 students) as the control group and Class IIIB (40 students) as the experimental group. The sampling technique used was saturated sampling. The research instrument was an essay test in the form of a narrative writing assignment. Hypothesis testing was conducted using the t-test and Effect Size (ES) analysis. The results showed that the use of flash card media had a significant effect on students’ narrative writing skills, with the magnitude of the effect categorized as medium.

Abstract

Educational development through education must be adjusted to the needs of the community. Changes in the learning process under the 2013 Curriculum have significantly affected teachers’ readiness to implement it in schools. Based on the results of a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) conducted with elementary school teachers in the Kuningan region, it was found that most teachers still experience difficulties in implementing learning processes in accordance with the 2013 Curriculum. These findings indicate the need for further investigation into the factors causing teachers’ difficulties in applying the curriculum-based learning process. Therefore, this study aims to examine the implementation of process standards in the 2013 Curriculum at the elementary school level. This research employed a case study method and was conducted at public elementary schools in Kuningan Regency, namely SD Negeri Dukuhdalem (Japara District), SD Negeri 1 Manislor (Jalaksana District), and SD Negeri 1 Purwawinangun (Kuningan District). The research instruments used were observation sheets and interview guides. The results of the study indicate that the main obstacles in implementing the syllabus under the 2013 Curriculum include a lack of socialization regarding changes in syllabus content, teachers’ difficulties in preparing lesson plans—particularly in incorporating activities aligned with the scientific approach—and discrepancies between the required learning materials and those provided in textbooks. In terms of classroom management, teachers faced challenges related to their limited readiness to adapt to changes in the learning process. Furthermore, in the assessment aspect, most teachers reported difficulties due to the complexity of the assessment system and the limited availability of assessment instruments. These findings suggest that teachers still encounter significant challenges in fully implementing the learning and assessment processes mandated by the 2013 Curriculum.
