Scripta-English Department Journal is Journal that publishes academic articles that recognize successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The journal invites submission of 1) Research that emanates from or informs campus-community partnerships; 2) Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; 3) Literature, Teaching English as Foreign Language and Technology; and 4) Commentary on emerging trends, developments, and/or challenges. The publication of this journal aims to spread conceptual thinking or ideas and the research findings obtained in the field of English Education and Literature. This journal will publish twice a year;  May and  November. The scope of Scripta-Journal of English Language Education is on Research on English linguistics and literature. We focus on: 1) LANGUAGE SCIENCE (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, mother tongue, language acquisition, ethnolinguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis/CDA, forensic linguistics). 2) LITERATURE SCIENCE (Oral literature and written literature with various approaches to structuralism, literary psychology, sociology of literature, post colonial. 4) Teaching English as a second or foreign language. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the difficulties faced by students when studying English in an online school and the solutions they use to overcome those difficulties. The objective of this descriptive qualitative research is to explain the real situation of eighth grade students' learning problems at SMPN 3 Satu Atap Karangsambung, with the researcher as the key instrument. Researchers used the WhatsApp application to disseminate a questionnaire and conduct interviews with respondents in order to collect data. In analyzing the data, the researcher detects and categorizes learning difficulties, displays and calculates the percentage of data using the original text in the form of an essay, and provides findings and recommendations after evaluating the data. The study's findings revealed five challenges that students face when studying English in an online education setting. The most common issue students have is increasing English vocabulary, which has an impact on the appearance of the other four obstacles. In addition, the majority of students utilized the same approach to overcome their learning difficulties, according to the findings. The findings of this study aid teachers in assessing the learning process in order to better meet the needs of students.

Abstract

This study aims to find out rhetorical proof and rhetorical figure of repetition, to analyze the speech delivery strategy, and to explain the application of rhetoric in teaching speaking. This research belongs to qualitative research. The main instrument in this research was the researcher itself using documentation. The data of this research was taken from RM’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly in the form text and video. The unit analysis of this research was the transcript of RM’s speech and the video of the speech. The researcher analyzed the data using content analysis. The result of this research showed that RM used rhetorical proof logos (10%), ethos (42%), and pathos (48%) in his speech. He also provided rhetorical figure of repetition such as anaphora (45%), epistrophe (11%), mesodiplosis (22%), anadiplosis (11%), and conduplication (11%) to give his speech the touch of art. In delivering speech, he used speech delivery strategy, includes storytelling for 54%, tone of voice, pause, and body movement. Moreover, the result of the study in this research can be applied in English learning at the tenth grade, especially in spoken advertisement.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to reveal student’s personality, the students’ speaking ability, dan to find out if there is any specific influence of student’s personality (extrovert introvert) on their speaking ability in English Education Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo. This research was quantitative research. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and documentation. Data collection techniques used questionnaire and documentation. Data analysis used descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. This study shows that (1) the dominant students’ personality was in extrovert category with the means score = 84.47. (2) The students' speaking ability was in good category with the means score = 77.55 at the interval of 70 - 79. (3) There was positive and significant influence of students’ personality on speaking ability with the value of regression analysis was 0.486 and the significant level score 0.000 was lower than 0.05. The regression model (students’ personality) was able to be explained its influence on speaking ability by 22.22%, while the influence of 77.78% is explained by other factors that are not used in this regression model.

Abstract

Understanding English news is one of secondary students’ competency in English skills. The researchers choose Arirang News as a learning material for teaching grammar. The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not Arirang News effective to be implemented as a learning material in order to improve students’ English proficiency for ten graders of high school students. The research method was a quantitative method with pre-experimental design. The researcher took X BDP B consist of 33 students as experimental class. The result showed that Arirang News can be said to be effective because based on data post-test experiments were higher than the results of the data pre-test.

Abstract

The previous research identified students’ listening and using the media is a way to enhance it, one of the media is the VOA Learning English website. The objective of the study is to find out and explain VOA learning English website as media can build English student listening skills. This study used quantitative research in this investigation. Moreover, this study used a pre-experimental design employed in the investigation. Based on quantitative research techniques, the writer was given the correlation between independent factors and population-dependent variables in this study. Pre-experimental design. The research was conducted at SMA PGRI 117 Tangerang. The pre-test and post-test scores revealed significant (2-tailed) findings of 0.077 a (0.05), where the significance score was higher than 0.05, based on the calculation table data normality. It indicates that the pre-test and post-test data are both normal. As a result, the data used in this study are normal, allowing for a smooth transition to the subsequent statistical test. Based on the statistical calculation, there is a positive influence between teaching listening skills by VOA Learning English website and without VOA Learning English website. The result shows that the value of the tscore (15.412) is higher than the ttable (1.714) at the significance degree of 5%. Thus that the Hypothesis (H1) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (H0) is accepted. Hence, VOA Learning English website can build English students’ listening skills of class tenth-grade students of SMA PGRI 117 Tangerang.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop learning media in the form of a Word Square-based exercise module on the topic of writing descriptive text. This research is a research and development method using a development model, namely ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). The subjects in this study were students of class X MIPA 1 SMAN 9 Tangerang. The data analysis used in this research is descriptive quantitative with percentage results. The results of the study obtained an assessment, among others; 1) material expert validation with 4 assessment aspects obtained an average percentage score of 83.09% with high and very valid criteria, 2) media expert validation with 3 assessment aspects obtained an average percentage score of 89.38% with very valid criteria, 3) validation of linguists with 3 aspects of assessment obtained an average percentage score of 84.16% with very valid criteria. The assessment of student responses on the small class test got an average score of 84.99% with high criteria and on the large class test an average percentage score of 84.33% with high criteria. Based on the results of the assessment, it can be stated that the learning media in the form of a Word Square-based exercise module that was developed is valid or suitable for use in learning to write descriptive text.

Abstract

Based on the 2013 curriculum, this study analyzes an English textbook for senior high school students in the XI grade entitled "Bahasa Inggris." The assessment used a BSNP rubric, which is in accordance with the 2013 curriculum's core and basic competencies. An explanation-heavy descriptive qualitative methodology is used in this investigation. Using the BSNP assessment criteria, the researcher modified the textbook material to match the core competencies and basic competencies of the 2013 curriculum. Data were obtained by the researcher using document analysis. Secondly, because the researcher focused on the subject in the first semester, only four chapters were analyzed. According to the study's findings, 53% of the content is proof of concept. This indicates that the content used for the XI grade in the "Bahasa Inggris" textbook during the first semester is still acceptable.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve students’ vocabulary skills through outdoor learning activity. This research was conducted in SMP Islam Ruhama, Cirendeu. The population of this research was seventh-grade students in academic year 2022/2023. The sample of this research was 7.1 consists of 24 students. The method of this study was quantitative method and using pre-experimental design. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test as an instrument that given to the students. The data were analyzed by using the formula statistical computerization repeated measures (paired samples t-test) of SPSS V.28. The result score of the data indicated that the average in pre-test was (51,45). And the total average in post-test were (84,79). There was a significance different from the result post-test score was higher than pre-test score. Thus, it can be concluded that the Outdoor Learning Activity has a significant effect on the vocabulary skills of students in class 7.1 at SMP Islam Ruhama, Cirendeu.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the students' challenges in learning vocabulary and the effectiveness of teaching practice in students’ vocabulary mastery. This research used a qualitative research method with a descriptive qualitative research design. The data source in this research was taken by participants at SMP Islam Terpadu Assalaam, in class 9C, in the academic year 2022/2023. The researcher used checklist observation and semi-structured interviews to collect the data in this research. This research shows that students’ confidence and understanding are the main challenges of teaching practice for students in mastery of vocabulary in blended learning. Berfore using YouTube videos and Role-play activities, 3 of 6 students feel difficult and not interested to learn vocabulary. After using YouTube videos and Role-play activities, the result of the study shows that 5 of 6 participants need such interactive media. After learning vocabulary using YouTube videos and Role-play activities, 5 of the 6 participants are interesting to learn vocabulary. 5 of 6 participants feel Role-play and YouTube videos can help them to master vocabulary in pronouncing the words, building sentences and understanding how to use the words.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine how effectively the Listen English Practice App at SMP Islam Ruhama improves students' understanding of listening. The population of this research is eight²-grade students, and the sample is 27 students. The method of this study is experimental research with a pre-experimental design that applies the pre-test and post-test. In this study, the researcher used one class as an experiment. Data has been analyzed using a t-test, data analysis shows the average value of the pre-test is 51.29 and the post-test is 80.74. Interpretation of data shows that there are some significant differences between listening skills using Listen English Practice App and not using Listen English Practice App. This shows that the Listen English Practice App is influential for eight²-grade students junior high school students of SMP Islam Ruhama. An option in learning media is the Listen English Practice Application; it has a positive impact on the research and can encourage students to study English.
