Scripta-English Department Journal is Journal that publishes academic articles that recognize successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The journal invites submission of 1) Research that emanates from or informs campus-community partnerships; 2) Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; 3) Literature, Teaching English as Foreign Language and Technology; and 4) Commentary on emerging trends, developments, and/or challenges. The publication of this journal aims to spread conceptual thinking or ideas and the research findings obtained in the field of English Education and Literature. This journal will publish twice a year;  May and  November. The scope of Scripta-Journal of English Language Education is on Research on English linguistics and literature. We focus on: 1) LANGUAGE SCIENCE (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, mother tongue, language acquisition, ethnolinguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis/CDA, forensic linguistics). 2) LITERATURE SCIENCE (Oral literature and written literature with various approaches to structuralism, literary psychology, sociology of literature, post colonial. 4) Teaching English as a second or foreign language. Abstract

Abstract. This research aimed to analyze about a story entitled pacman by viastro on tumblr social media, which tried to find out the kinds of language style are mostly used in pacman story on tumblr. This research focused on Martin Joos theory which discussed about language style. There are frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method in which the data was collected by reading the whole story then finding out the conversation that contains language style. Later on, the researcher classified them based on the types of language style that were found on the conversation, then finding the dominant type of language style. After conducting the analysis, this study showed that there were three types of language style from five types of language style according Martin Joos. They were consultative, casual, and intimate style. Casual was found as the most dominant types of language style in the story with 10 data, intimate with 6 data, and consultative 2 data. Finally, the reseacher hopes that this study will be useful for the future improvement of studying literature, especially about language style.

Abstract

The use of mother tongue in English class has advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the function of the use of Sundanese language in learning English, as well as the views of students regarding the use of Sundanese language in English classes at MA Miftahussa'adah in grade 11 science and social studies. The methodology used in this study is a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection techniques in this study through observation, and interviews. The results showed: 1) The function of the use of the Sundanese mother tongue in learning English is as an introduction, explanation, expressing feelings or emotions and providing motivation, 2) Students have positive perception of the use of Sundanese in learning English. This study provides us with information about the use of mother tongue in the classroom. From the students we can see that the use of the mother tongue should not be completely eliminated but can only be minimized, this is to maintain the comfort of students in learning English. And so that students better understand well and easily the material taught by the teacher.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the students’ errors in using punctuation marks at Cakung East Jakarta. this research approach was descriptive quantitative method. In collecting the data, the researcher asked the students to rewrite the sentence with the right punctuation. The total population teenagers at Cakung and samples was 20 teenagers as the respondents. For the exam, The researcher discovers that the test's average score is 52.5, with 100 being the highest and 80 being the lowest possible scores. For the questioonnaire, the researcher finds the result of the questionnaire for the first statement always use a period to end statement sentence is 70% participant choose always, second statement use period in every sentence statement is 40% choose always, third statement use comma before writing a direct sentence is 35% choose sometimes, fourth statement use a comma in the middle of sentence is 40% choose often, fifth statement use quotation is 45% choose always, sixth statement exclamation point is 50% choose always, and the last use exclamation when showing a surprised expression is 45% choose always. The reason why they made erorr is because they did not know the limitation and the role of the structure and context.

Abstract

This research explores the implementation of the brain-writing strategy as an instructional approach to address the writing challenges encountered by students of secondary school level. Writing difficulties often arise due to incomplete involvement in the different stages of the writing process, especially a pre-writing stage. The aim of this study is to overcome the issues by utilizing the brain-writing strategy on the teaching of hortatory writing, while evaluating its impact on both student performance and perception. A triangulation mixed method was employed as the research design, integrating multiple data collection techniques from an observation, tests, and a classroom survey on perception. The study took place in a public high school, with a purposive sampling technique utilized to select 36 eleventh-grade students as participants. This sampling method ensured the deliberate selection of participants based on specific criteria pertinent to the research objectives. The findings that was collected from some observations illuminated the implementation of brain-writing strategy as an instructional strategy to enhance students’ writing skills, especially in the content and structure. Through the analysis of data collected via various methods, the researchers gained insights into the improvements in students’ performance and their perceptions of the strategy. This research contributes to the existing knowledge on effective writing instruction and offers valuable information for educators seeking innovative strategies to enhance students’ hortatory writing abilities. Ultimately, the findings aim to inform educational practices and assist students in overcoming writing challenges.

Abstract

The purpose is to investigate the students' perceptions of QuillBot utilization in writing class based on the framework of TAM 3. The problems include the students' perceptions of QuillBot in terms of usefulness, ease of use, and behavioral intention. The methodology is a descriptive study using a closed-ended questionnaire in the form of a Likert scale with five scales from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The questionnaire consists of 11 items covering three aspects: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention to use QuillBot. The responses were then analyzed through a descriptive statistics framework, including frequency, percentage, and mean score. All aspects of TAM are perceived positively by the students. The perceived usefulness reaches 81.6%, categorized as positive perception, with a mean value of 4.26. The perceived ease of use reaches 90.75%, with a mean value of 4.34 categorized as strongly positive. The behavioral intention reaches 100% with a mean value of 4.82, categorized as strongly positive. This study has presented the result of an investigation of students'' perceptions of three aspects of TAM, including PU, PEU, and BI, towards QuillBot utilization. Therefore, QuillBot can be recommended as an alternative paraphrasing tool for EFL learners, especially in writing class.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the increase in students' motivation in participating in learning and language skills, especially telling stories using Quizizz media at Muhammadiyah Elementary School, Purworejo. This type of research uses mixed research methods, namely using qualitative methods to measure motivation and using quantitative methods to measure the increase in students‘ storytelling abilities. The subjects in this research were students at SD Muhammadiyah Purworejo. Data collection uses interview, observation, and test related to the Quizizz media learning process. Data analysis techniques use descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. This media improved the students‘ storytelling ability and their motivation in learning. It received a positive response for its use in the learning process so it is suitable as a solution to problems that arise for students. They become more enthusiastic and enthusiastic, so they can eliminate feelings of boredom and laziness while learning from home because it provides a feeling of fun, comfort, and humor in learning. So that their intellectual intelligence can develop well.

Abstract

This research was conducted to examine whether Genre Based Approach can improve students' descriptive text writing skills. A quantitative research design was adopted in this study using a pre-test and post-test control design. The research sample was 70 students of grade X Mechatronics of SMKN 3 Salatiga. The instrument is a written test. Data were analyzed using SPSS. The results showed that the average value of the pre-test was 65.56 (SD = 9.92672) and the average value of the post-test was 77.69 (SD = 6.56754). Based on the t-test, the sig. is 0.00. It is less than 0.05, so that there is a significant difference before and after the treatment. study of Genre-based Approach had a positive effect on students' writing skills in descriptive text. The study provides valuable insights and contributes to the broader field of research on the relationship between Genre-Based Approach, Jigsaw Online Searching Strategy and students’ writing proficiency.

Abstract

Writing is one of the skills that is quite challenging for students, especially middle school students. The aim of this study is to enhance the students` wiritng skill on Short Functional Text; Invitation Card. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR). The participants were students of class VIII D SMP N 1 Sukoharjo. The instruments used were observation, writing test, and questionnaires about students` responses. The results of this study showed that student’s ability in wiriting an invitation card still low before the application of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method and Canva Application learning media and increase after the use of PBL and Canva application. Students also experience improvement in their ability to write invitation cards that is shown by the result of 96% percentage of achievement of learning objectives.

Abstract

This study investigates the improvement of Video Assisted Project-Based Learning (VAPBL) in improving learners' speaking skills. While VAPBL, has been employed in many studies, the development of learners' speaking skills in terms of fluency, accuracy, and coherence has received less attention in the literature. Twenty-two learners from the language class of Secondary School, participated in the study. The investigation employed Classroom Action Research design to measure the outcome of VAPBL on learners' speaking proficiency. The two cycles involved selecting appropriate video materials and designing project-based learning activities aligned with curriculum objectives. There are two cycles in this research and each cycle consist of three meetings. During the application phase, learners engaged in VAPBL activities over a specified period, including watching videos, participating in discussions, and completing project-based tasks. The findings revealed a significant advancement in learners' speaking abilities following the application of VAPBL. Moreover, in the questionnaire the learners’ perception have positive outcome of VAPBL in language learning activities. This study underscores the importance of interactive and collaborative learning environments facilitated by VAPBL in enhancing learners' speaking skills.

Abstract

This research aimed to get the three aspect of discourse analysis: contextual, grammatical and lexical aspect of the song lyric entitled Boulevard. In this study, the researcher would like to discuss the song lyric using qualitative approach. After analyzing it, the researcher found that the lyric was about a sad story of a heartbroken man and hoping to get a happy life with his lover if he got another chance. In the side of grammatical and lexical analysis give a cohession and coherence in the song lyric. The result of the grammatical and lexical aspect gives a depiction of cohesion and coherence of the song discourse of “Boulevard”. It can be seen that there are seven forms of first singular personal pronoun of “I”, nine forms of second plural personal pronoun of “you”, and three form of first plural personal pronoun of “we”. Though, it is difficult to find lexical aspect of this song discourse in the song lyric “Boulevard, there are collocation and equivalency aspect in it. They are “My love” and “lovers”, “happy forever” and “love together” as colocation aspect. Whereas “let me know” and “tell me”, “go” and “left” as the equivalency aspect.
