Abstract

One of the indicators of a healthy environment is proper waste management. However, waste has become a global issue, with approximately 40% of the world’s waste being improperly managed, and its volume is projected to reach 3.40 billion metric tons by 2050. In Indonesia, 65.83% of waste is still disposed of in landfills, with a total volume of 68.7 million tons per year, the majority of which consists of organic waste (41.27%) and household waste (38.28%). This study aims to analyze the impact of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) and other factors such as population size and education level on the amount of waste volume in Aceh Province from 2018 to 2020. Using a quantitative approach, secondary data obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Aceh Province were used in a panel data regression model. The results of the study show that GRDP and population size have a significant and positive influence on waste volume. These findings confirm that economic growth and population density increase the amount of waste, while higher education can reduce waste generation. Based on these results, it is expected that the government can formulate effective waste management policies, including improving the education level of the community to reduce the amount of waste produced. This study provides important insights for the government in planning better waste management in Aceh Province.

Abstract

East Java played a strategic role in Indonesia's economy, contributing 14.6% to the national GDP with economic growth returning to 5.34% in 2022. Whilst demonstrating sound economic performance, there were significant variations in human development levels across East Java's regions. The relationship between HDI components (health, education and per capita expenditure indices) and economic growth at the regional level required further examination. Previous studies showed complex relationships between human development and economic growth; however, research analysing the specific influence of each HDI component on economic growth at the provincial level remained limited. This study analysed the impact of Human Development Index (HDI) components on economic growth in East Java, Indonesia. Using panel data from 38 districts/cities during 2018-2022, this study employed a panel data regression model with a fixed effect approach. The variables examined included the GRDP growth rate as the dependent variable, and the health index (life expectancy), education index (expected years of schooling and mean years of schooling), and per capita expenditure index as independent variables. The results showed that the health index and per capita expenditure index had positive and significant effects on economic growth, whilst the education index had a negative effect. The analysis also revealed spatial variations in the influence of HDI components on economic growth across different regions. These findings emphasised the importance of balanced investment in health, education, and living standards to promote sustainable economic growth. The research provided policy implications for the government in designing comprehensive development strategies to improve human resource quality and economic performance in East Java.

Abstract

A deep understanding of the effect of interest rate parity on the rupiah exchange rate is crucial in formulating appropriate economic policies that are responsive to the dynamics of the global financial market. Fluctuations in the rupiah exchange rate not only affect the purchasing power of the Indonesian people, but also capital in this country. This study aims to comprehensively examine the effect of interest rate parity on the rupiah exchange rate in Indonesia in the context of the global economy, using a regression analysis approach, historical data on nominal interest rates, international interest rates, and the rupiah exchange rate are collected and analyzed to determine the relationship between these variables. Based on the covered interest rate parity (CIRP) theory and the covered interest rate parity (UIP) theory, this research hypothesis is proposed to test whether the difference in interest rates between Indonesia and its trading partner countries has a significant effect on the rupiah exchange rate. The results of the analysis that have been carried out state that the relationship between the nominal interest rates of Indonesia and the United States has no impact on the Rupiah/Dollar exchange rate until 2023.

Abstract

Poverty is a structural problem that is still a major challenge in underdeveloped areas such as Sumba Island. The purpose of this research is to analyze how government spending in the education and health sectors affects the Human Development Index, as well as to explore its effect on poverty levels. This study uses a quantitative method with panel data covering four districts on Sumba Island during the period 2019 to 2024. The data used was obtained from the official report of the Central Statistics Agency and the Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget document. The analysis in this study was carried out using panel data regression through a fixed-effect approach, which was determined based on the results of the Chow and Hausman test. The results obtained show that government spending on the education and health sectors has a positive and significant impact on the increase in the Human Development Index. In addition, the Human Development Index has a negative and significant effect on the poverty rate. These findings indicate that increased investment in basic services such as education and health is likely to drive human development and reduce poverty rates. Therefore, local governments need to focus budget policies on these sectors in a more targeted and sustainable manner.

Abstract

The tourism sector is the backbone of the economy in the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown DIY's vulnerability to shocks in the tourism sector. The drastic decline in tourist visits during the pandemic resulted in a decline in PAD. This study examines the effect of the tourism sector on Local Government Revenue (Pendapatan Asli Daerah, PAD) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) using an annual panel dataset from 2018 to 2024 across five districts/cities in DIY. The independent variables include the number of tourist attractions, number of visitors, number of hotels and accommodations, and number of restaurants, while the dependent variable is the PAD value in billion rupiahs. A panel regression method was employed, and the Random Effect Model (REM) was selected based on the results of the Chow test, Hausman test, and Lagrange Multiplier test. The analysis reveals that the number of hotels and accommodations has a positive and significant effect on PAD, whereas the number of tourist attractions has a negative and significant effect. The numbers of visitors and restaurants show positive but statistically insignificant effects. These findings recommend strengthening accommodation management and improving the quality of tourist attractions as strategies to support PAD growth in DIY through the tourism sector.

Abstract

This study examines various variables that are thought to affect the Indonesian Happiness Index. The type of data used is secondary data in the form of panel data consisting of 34 provinces in Indonesia with observation years 2017 and 2021. The results of various panel data regression tests show that the most suitable model is the Fixed Effect Model (FEM). The results of the study conducted show that the Human Development Index has a significant and positive effect on the Happiness Index, and the Gender Inequality Index has a significant and negative effect on the Happiness Index. Meanwhile, Gross Regional Domestic Product and School Participation Rate 16 to 18 years old are not proven to affect the Happiness Index significantly. An interesting finding in this study is that Indonesian people tend to feel less happy when men and women are given equal equality, because basically people tend to still adhere to a patriarchal culture.
