Al-Ulum adalah jurnal yang terbit berkala pada bulan Juni dan Desember, ditelaah dan direview oleh para ahli dalam bidangnya, diterbitkan oleh lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian pada Masyarakat Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Sultan Amai Gorontalo, Indonesia ISSN 1412-0534 E-ISSN 2442-8213 Al-Ulum telah diakreditasi dengan peringkat B oleh Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Keputusan Keputusan Direktur Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi No. 53/DIKTI/Kep/2013 untuk periode 2013-2018. Sekarang, AL-Ulum telah terakreditasi sistem online dengan peringkat “Sinta 2” untuk periode 2018-2022 oleh Kementerian Riset, Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi SK No. 21/E/KPT/2018.

Discourse of the implementation of character values on the National Educational System is not a new agenda. The implementation has motivated by the national awareness about the importance of character building toward the young generation as the guarantees for nation strength. The aim is to improve students’ potency and build them to be piety to Allah SWT, to have good personality, to be healthy, intellectual, smart, and creative, be autonomous, and become democratic citizen, responsible, in accordance with the message on the law of National Education system. It is indicated that the first value should be implemented is universal truth without formulating the source. Literature works is one of sources which full of moral teaching and can be analyzed to find out the truth, and transferred to the students. The values of educational character on literature work can be implemented to students through emotional analysis. Abu al-‘Atâhiyah poems is one of literary works which full of moral teaching and can be analyzed and implemented on education, both formal and non-formal schools.

Leaders are individuals who led a social activity. They should regulate, lead, organize, manage and evaluating people. Therefore, leadership should have a legitimate acknowledgment and support from his followers. In order to have a great deal of influence from his/her followers, a leader should have good personality and good character; that is, understand and aware his/her own existences, respect to others, have good morality and also devout to Allah SWT. To develop a good and strong leadership, a leader should have spiritual and emotional intelligence and develop these intelligences continually, so his/her good character eventually will be built and it will be useful for his/her organization and community.

Students consider that teaching of love in tasawuf consists of great values of educational character. The teaching of love itself stimulates good character as manifested in the willingness to live in peace which in turn enable to guide one to exercise good speech and deeds that could make other people feel happy,sincere, fair, and honest.On the basis of this reliance, one should realize that love could only be reached by implementing systematic character education because started from purifying self from any sinful deeds and then followed by fulfilling self with good deeds, such as love, patience, and tolerance. The benefit that can be acquired from the concept of love are empathy as well as mutual help among people, harmonious and peaceful life as member of community as well as nation.

This paper describes the link between educational character and language education. Educational character is an important solution to overcome the moral decline, among young people (especially students). Educational character is closely related to language education, because some of the values of the character contained in the language education. Schools play an important role as a vehicle for character building and reinforce the cultural values of the nation. Language education, including literary, is one vehicle for shaping the character of students. In other words, it has a role in the formation of character. In learning the language and literature, strategies, methods, media, and teaching materials need to be optimized to form the character of students. Yet, language education is not only the duty and responsibility of the language teacher, but the responsibility of all teachers because all the teachers definitely use language. Thus, the most important thing to do is to increase students reading ability which is a key to success.

The discourse of ikhtilaf is an undeniable reality. Consequently, to put forward opinion in the same agreement will likely to contradict with human nature which has been determined by Allah SWT. The different thoughts among the ulamas are actually good phenomena in Islamic teaching, which lead to Isla to be more variativ. Fiqh minded which are triggering into in-tolerancy dan discriminative character toward the other groups should be critically understood as an historical product which is very possible to be changed. This paper proposes tolerant character development in facing the difference among Islamic thought schools (mazhab fiqh) through four scopes of character education: that are, spiritual and emotional development, intellectual develompmet, physical and kinesthetic development, and affective and creativity development. These four characters will give per-ception to address the differences (ikhtilaf) among Muslims and eventually come to either tolerant or in-tolerant character.

The main purpose of education, according to Madjid as written in his fundamental political agenda about education, is increasing the value of the purity of human being given from God. This is related to the concept of tarbiyah and fitrah as keywords of Islamic education with the goal of fostering the whole person development through character building as well as the development of piety to Allah. This paper employs the semiotic research method and interpretive paradigm and qualitative methodology. This research was based on text analysis by reading text books as sign system. In Indonesian history, education has also raised the idea and the movement of modern nationalism. Therefore, education should be a form of the foremost strategic and productive inventory that should be put on one of the highest levels in the national development priority of Indonesia.

The development of terrorist groups continues to undergo metamorphosis through the transformation of the communication network and radicalism doctrine. This phenomenon makes affiliation efforts with radical groups, including building networks in the higher education. Radical Ideas easily penetrate campuses and universities. The vulnerability is not only seen from a psycho-social approach alone, but also as in instrument or media that outspread hatred and violence that designed to fit campus lifestyle. Some of the ways are such as books, magazines, bulletins, internet and social media networks. Universities can formulate appropriate and effective communication strategies as an effort in de-radicalisation, indoctrination, and de-ideologisation. Altering Islamic stigma as a terrorist religion and eliminating the image of Indonesia as implementing the teachings of Islam substantively according to Indonesian Islamic localities can do a terrorist country. Islam penetrated and developed in Indonesia not based on violence or religious radicalism, but by reflecting the spirit of Islam as the religion of blessing to the world (rahmatan lil alamin).

This article elaborates the actualisation and challenges of Islamic Higher Education (PTAI). This study shows that PTAIs are not only a transfer or transfer of knowledge institution, but they are also able to support the students and the community in developing its potential. In the case of the FKTK of UIN Alauddin, this study shows that the faculty's response to social change with the effort to build intelligence and broaden the horizons, build a work ethic and apply a positive-active curriculum, and perform scientific integrations. It thus becomes crucial effort in order to prepare learners to become human resources with high academic ability and social sensitivity. The study, hence, recommends that the PTAIs should orient themselves to the future by applying the pillars of true education, namely: learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together.

This article aims to elaborate the pattern of regeneration of Islamic scholars (ulama) in South Sulawesi by focusing on the study of Ma’had Aly As’adiyah Sengkang Wajo. In the search, a qualitative approach was used. Data collecting was done through interviews, observation, literature study and documentation. The results of the research indicate that the regeneration of Islamic scholars in South Sulawesi had been long conducted in some Pondok Pesantren (Islamic Boarding Schools). This study finds out that the regeneration of Islamic scholars was provided with a certain medium in a special program. The existence of Pondok Pesantren As’adiyah Sengkang by implementing the regeneration of Islamic scholars through Ma’had Aly caused Pondok Pesantren As’adiyah Sengkang to be one of 13 organizers of Ma’had Aly program that was given an operational license by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

Professional lecturers are lecturer professionalism that includes professionalism of teaching, research, and community service. The institution has the responsibility to develop the profession of the lecturer. An important step that can be done by higher education institutions is by developing lecturer profession guidance program covering the field of teaching, research, and community service. The program of developing and fostering the professionalism of the lecturers should be combined with the demands of science, technology, art that develops expansively and qualitatively. The development and professional development of this lecturer can be done through coaching programs based on institutional needs analysis. Programs can be said to succeed if in a lecturer there has been a process of transformation of the program. This transformation process can be seen from two things, namely: (1) improvement of ability in performing a task and (2) behaviour change which is reflected in attitude, discipline and work ethic.
