Abstract

This study was intended to figure out the effectiveness of Numbered Heads Together in improving speaking skill of the seventh grade students of SMP PGRI 4 Denpasar. This study was conducted in class VII B which consisted of 16 students: 12 males and 4 females. This study was conducted by the fact that the subjects still faced problem in speaking skill especially in vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Based on the result of the pre-test which was carried out in the pre-cycle, among 16 subjects who did the pre-test, there was none of the subjects passed the minimum score. The present study was then carried out by implementing Numbered Heads Together in successive two cycles where each cycle consisted of two sessions. The results of post-tests score for cycle I was 2.67 while in cycle II was 3.18. The results of post-test in each cycle showed that there was a significant progressing achievement of the subjects’ speaking skill. In addition, the data analysis of questionnaire score showed the comparative percentages figures of 55.78% for option A, 42.40% for option B, 1.80% for option C and 0% of option D. The result of the questionnaire above clearly showed that the students’ learning behavior and motivation have been improved significantly when Numbered Heads Together was implemented in teaching speaking. In conclusion, the present classroom action study proved that Numbered Heads Together was effective to improve the seventh grade students’ of SMP PGRI 4 Denpasar ability in speaking skill; in addition, the subjects also responded positively to the implementation of Numbered Heads Together.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aimed at describing the form and process of linguistic implicature form which exists in the communication among students of SMP N 1 Sawan. The method of data collection in this research was observation interview and recording. The data gathered were then analyzed through three phase namely data reduction, data display, and data verification. The result of this study showed that there were three forms of language functions namely imperatives or command, reporting and questioning. The reason of choosing those forms of language function was to avoid misunderstanding among speakers or hearers so that no one will get offended. Besides, the use of imperatives, report, and questions was due to the factor of familiarity and intimacy between speakers. In relation to conversational implicature, the students of SMP N 1 Sawan use six kinds of implicature. Those are, asking, rejecting, mocking, commanding, ordering, and informing facts. Hopefully, the result of this research can give contribution in understanding the implied meaning of the speaker to the hearer.

Abstract

This study aimed at (1) improving the math reasoning and communicating skill of VIIIA students at SMP Negeri 3 Karangasem and (2) investigating the students’ responses towards the implementation of 5E Learning Cycle model assisted by structured student worksheet. This study was a classroom action research whisch was conducted in 3 cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning phase, action phase, observation/evaluation phase, and reflection phase. The subject of the study was 30 VIIIA students at SMP Negeri 3 Karangasem in the academic year 2013/2014. Math reasoning and communicating skill data were gathered through an essay test and the students’ response data was collected through a questionnaire. Afterwards, the data was analyzed by means of descriptive analysis. The findings revealed that the implementation of 5E Learning Cycle model assisted by structured student worksheet was able to improve the math reasoning and communicating skill of VIIIA students at SMP Negeri 3 Karangasem. It was proven by the mean score 23.06 (quite good) in cycle I turned into 28.57 (good) in cycle II, and it turned into 34.2 (very good) in cycle III. The students gave positive responses towards the implementation of 5E Learning Cycle model assisted by structured student worksheet which was proven by the mean score 35.7.

Abstract

Balinese always preserve cultural traditions as the inheritance of their ancestors. Omed-omedan tradition is a unique and rare tradition since such tradition cannot be encountered in other areas. Therefore, it is interesting to be discussed in a paper. This reseacrh was aimed at finding out: How is the process of implementation of Omed-omedan tradition at Banjar Kaja Kelurahan Sesetan, South Denpasar Sub-District, Denpasar City?, What is the relationship between Omed-omedan tradition and the series of Nyepi Holiday at Banjar Kaja Kelurahan Sesetan, South Denpasar Sub-District Denpasar City? What is the meaning of Omed-omedan tradition for the people at Banjar Kaja Kelurahan Sesetan, South Denpasar Sub-District, Denpasar City? The theoretical bases applied in this research are 1). Culture, 2). Religious systems, 3). Society. The results of the research show that the implementation of Omed-omedan Tradition must be conducted as it relates to Ida Bhatara Sesuhunan at in Banjar Kaja Sesetan temple, which is believed to be able to provide safety for His people, in addition, Omedomedan tradition is also an event of Masima Krama (visit and forgive each other) to welcome Caka New Year (Nyepi Holiday). The conclusions of this research are 1). Omed-omedan tradition is Purwa Dresta, namely a religious custom and it is not allowed if it is not conducted because if it is not conducted, it is believed it would lead to the undesirable things, 2). In its performance, Omed-omedan tradition is an event of Masima Krama in order to welcome Caka New Year, 3). The meaning of this Omed-omedan tradition is as a devotion to Ida Bhatara Sesuhunan, as by always conducting this tradition, the members of Banjar Kaja Sesetan are believed to always have His protection.

Abstract

English is an international language that should be mastered if we want to communicate with people around the world. Unfortunately in Indonesia, English becomes a frightening lesson. This condition might happen because the inability of the lecturers in choosing and varying teaching technique. This hence encourages the writer to try to offer a procedural and effective teaching technique to support learning the language, that is, PPP (Presentation Practice and Production). Each phase of this technique is well organized as it has different things to be applied so that the students will find the technique much more various and interesting. During the three phases, both lecturer and students will do different activities, for example, participation or lecturers’ roles and students’ roles, types of control, and mistakes’ treatment. The only thing that makes this technique is quite different with other techniques is that it provides the students with a plenty of times to practice what they have already studied in the classroom. Therefore, the students will learn the language contextually by using a procedural and effective teaching technique.

Abstract

Based on observations in class XI of Saraswati 2 Denpasar Vocational High School, several obstacles were found when learning took place, including (1) student involvement in learning was still lacking, (2) students were less prepared to take part in learning, (3) lack of collaboration between students in completing assignment, (4) students have not been able to conclude the material being studied. In accordance with the file taken through interviews with the mathematics teacher of class XI of Saraswati 2 Denpasar Vocational High School, information the achievement of mathematics learning is categorized as low, because it has not reached the minimum completeness criteria that have been established of Saraswati 2 Denpasar Vocational High School. This study uses a qualitative approach and this type of research is a classroom action study (CAR). This research was carried out for up to two cycles. The percentage increase in the average score of student learning activities from cycle I to cycle II is 43.31% and the percentage increase in the average value of student learning achievement, learning completeness, and absorption from cycle I to cycle II are respectively: 8, 31%; 31.99%; and 8.31%. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the activities and student achievement in integral learning are not necessarily algebraic functions through the application of NHT type cooperative learning model in class XI students of Saraswati 2 Denpasar Vocational High School 2014/2015 of the academic year has increased.

Abstract

Keterampilan berbicara merupakan salah satu keterampilan yang harus selalu dilatih agar mereka dapat berkomunikasi dengan baik.Di samping itu, karakter juga merupakan salah satu hal yang sangat penting karena orang yang sukses bukan hanya karena hard skill tetapi juga soft skill.Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengatasi permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa semester tiga Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris yaitu keterampilan berbicara dan karakter.Penelitian dilaksanakan dalam beberapa siklus penelitian tindakan kelas dengan menerapkan model pembelajaran kolaborasi think-pair-share dengan konsep tri kaya parisudha. Setelah beberapa siklus, hasil penelitian menunjukkan terjadinya peningkatan dari pra siklus sampai siklus IV.Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa model pembelajaran yang diterapkan telah berhasil meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara dan mengembangkan karakter disiplin, jujur, kooperatif, kreatif dan saling menghormati.

Abstract

The study aimed at improving the students’ reading comprehension by implementing Modified Collaborative Strategic Reading (MCSR) technique. The subject was grade eleven students of SMA (SLUA) Saraswati 1 Denpasar, in which the amount was thirty students. There were two cycles (eight meetings), in this Classroom based Action Research. There were three instruments used: test, questionnaire, and diary. From the result of the post-test and analyzed questionnaire, it is shown that there is an increase in every meeting. This can be concluded that MCSR is effective in improving the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed at improving the activities and achievements of students learning. This research is a Class Action Research which was done in three cycles. Based on the result of data analysis, it shows that the student learning activity score of cycle I until cycle III and category in a row are “14,897”, “19,583”, and “20,710” with category are “fairly active”, “active”, and “very active”. The result of data analisys of learning achivement, the average score, mastery learning, and absorptive ability of cycle I until cycle III in a row are “7,67”, “7,77”, and “8,25”; “53,85%”, “71,05%”, and “89,74%”; and “76,7%”, “77,7%”, and “82,5%”. The result of data analisys of implementation of the learning of cycle I until cycle III and category in a row are “79,54%”, “93,175%” and “100%” with category are “good”, “very good”, and “very good”. While for result analisys data of student response, achieving very positive category with an average score of responses student “32,13”. Thus, the application of cooperative learning type TGT in learning the math flat side geometry can improve the activities and achievements of students learning.

Abstract

The study was conducted to know the influence of implementing Cooperative Learning Model Group Investigation (GI) type toward students’ motivation in learning. It was done by using batur Lake Geopark as the learning site. Design of the study is Non Equivalent pretest-posttest control group. The subject was all grade ten students of SMA Negeri 1 Kintamani in academic year 2012/2013. Through systematic sampling technique, there were 21 students for control group and 20 students for experiment group. The data was gathered by using quiestionaire, and then analyzed with non parametric statistics: Mann Whitney U Test. The results showed that there is a significant influence toward students’ learning motivation after having GI, around 254.11, sd= 14.1.
