Abstract

Abstract

Sebuah kalimat mempunyai dua tingkatan representasi; d-structure dan s-structure. Affect Alpha mengubah d-structure menjadi s-structure.

Abstract

Translating literary works is different from translating non-literary works. One of the literary texts meant in this study is novel. In the process of translating a novel, translators sometimes have problems to determine appropriate equivalent words. The equivalent words themselves must be literary words that are difficult to search. There are many factors that cause translators difficult to translate a novel. Some of them are lack of basic knowledge of English language and literature, misinterpretation and being careless in translation process. Consequently they have difficulties in linguistics, analysis, culture, and appreciation. So the way to overcome the problems is increasing the knowledge of both languages and cultures, having literary studies background, referring to guidance and rules of translating a novel or other literary works.

Abstract

Request is one of speech act phenomena, which we encounter most frequently in everyday social interaction. When expressing a request, the speaker has an intention to the hearer to do something that is beneficial to him/her. In this circumstance, the speaker is impossing on the hearer; while the hearer has to pay cost of carrying out the request. Brown and Levinson claim request as one kind of face threatening acts (FTA). Because of the nature of request, politeness strategy must be applied when expressing a request. There are four super strategies of politeness strategy defined by Brown and Levinson, i.e. bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, as well as off record. There are some reasons underlying the use of certain strategies. They are the urgency of the request itself, the relationship between the speaker and the hearer, not to mention the speaker’s willingness to lessen the imposition on the hearer. Yet, the use of the politeness strategies do not always work well. In other word, the speaker does not always gain what he wants.

Abstract

A text should have  a unity in order to represent its cohesiveness. One of the aspects in determining the unity is logical markers. Conjunctive Relation has a significant role in determining logical relation in a text. As logical markers, it unavoidably enables translators to configure logical meaning both in source text and in target text when translators are doing translation activity. In addition, conjunctive relation occasionally appears in several forms in either source text or target text. The  forms of conjunctive relation can be realized explicitly or metaphorically signaling logical relation.
