Abstract

Abstract            In the swamp area of the Sawah Village, the water quality is affected by pollutant originated from activities conducted around and in the swamp area. The low quality water may negatively affects the growth of Monopterusalbus and it is reflected in the growth pattern in the otolith of fish living in that swamp. A research aims to understand the pattern of otolith growth rings of theMonopterusalbuswas conducted in March to May 2018.The fish was captured using fishing gears, once/week. There were 61 fishes (31 females, 15 transitionand 15 males). The otoliths (sagita) is taken by tweezers and shaved using fine grindstone. Growth ring pattern in the otolith was studied using a binocular microscope. The length of otolith was 2.25-4.75 mm and weight 0.0040-0.0200 gram. Results shown that the  number of dark ring in the otolith of the fish ranged from 1 to 4. The distance between the nucleus and the first dark ring was varied (0.25-1.75 mm). These data indicates that the formation of dark ring may not be affected by periodical condition but it is affected by individual problem. The number of dark ring in otolith indicate that the fish is able to live properly in the swamp areas. Keywords: dark ring, sagita, freshwater eel, eel growth

Abstract

AbstractThe increment of the number of floating cages in the Koto Panjang Dam may result on increment of organic materials in the water and thus affect the presence of phytoplankton. A study aims to understand the phytoplankton composition around the cages area was conducted on April-May 2018. Samplings were conducted 3 times, once/week. There were 3 stations namely Station 1 area with 100-150 floating cages, Station 2 area with 200-300 floating cages and Station 3 area with 946 floating cages.   In each station, there were 3 sampling points, in the surface, in 2 Secchi depth, and in 4 Secchi depth. Water quality parameters measured were transparency, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, nitrate and phosphate. Results shown that there were 8 genera presents, namely Chlorophyceae (29 species), Zygnematophyceae (17 species), Trebuoxiophyceae (2 species), Cyanophyceae (14 species), Bacillariophyceae (14 species), Meidiophyceae (1 species), Cryptophyceae (1 species) and Euglenophyceae (1 species). They were consisted of 79 phytoplankton species. As the number of cages increase, types of phytoplankton present decrease. However, there is relationship between cages and abundance. As the number of cages increase, phytoplankton abundance also increase. The highest abundance was 72,468 cells/L (Station 3) and the lowest was 24,580 cells/L (Station 1). Other water quality parameter measured were transparency : 101-138 cm;       temperature : 28.3-31.70C; pH : 5.0-5.5; dissolved oxygen : 2.21-7.23 mg/L;    free carbon dioxide : 11.09-26.93 mg/L; nitrate : 0.06-0.17 mg/L and      phosphate : 0.07-0.26 mg/L. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded trophic state of Koto Panjang reservoir was categorized as eutrophic. Keyword: Koto Panjang Reservoir, Water quality, Organic Matter, Eutrophic

Abstract

Abstract                The noodle industry liquid waste is rich in Amoniak andTSS and thus need to be processed before being flown to environment. A research aims to reduce the Amoniak andTSS on liquid waste using biofilters has been conducted in March-April 2018. The noodle industry liquid waste (175 liters) was treated using a batch system that was consisted of 1 anaerob and 2 aerob tanks and a Pistia stratiotesphytoremediation pond. The liquid waste was kept for 10 ten days in anaerob tank with media gravel, sand and fibers. Then 7 days in aerob tanks with media chopped plastic bottle. Finally 15 days in a phytoremediation pondthat was completed withPistia stratiotes. By the end of the experiment, the Amoniak reduced from 9,4 mg/L to  3 mg/L (effectiveness 68.08%) and TSS reduced from 441 mg/L to 155 mg/L (effectiveness 64.85%). Other water quality parameter such as pH was normal and DO was improved. The treated waste was used for rearing Osphronemus gourami  (3-6 cm TL)and was kept for 15 days. The survival rate of the fish was 95%. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded that the combination of biofilters and phytoremediation system using Pistia stratiotes is effective to reduce the Amoniak and TSS content in thenoodle industry liquid waste. Keywords: Waste water, chopped plastic bottle media, batch system, waste management
