Abstract

Abstract Trophic State Index can be used to determine the trophic state of waters. The TSI was calculated based on physical, chemical and biological parameters and it is more representative for analyzing the trophical state of waters. To understand the trophic state of the Bandar Kayangan Lembah Sari Reservoir, a research has been conducted in March - April 2018. There were four sampling stations, namely station 1 (in the inlet, from the Ambang River), station 2 (in the inlet from the Merbau River), station 3 (in the middle of the lake) and station 4 (in the dam). In each station there were three sampling points, in the surface, in the middle of water column, and in the base of the river. Sampling were conducted 3 times, once/week. Water quality parameter measured were chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus, transparency, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and free carbondioxide. Trophic status was calculated based on Carlson’s Trophic State Index (TSI). The water quality parameter values were as follows: transparency 65.17-74.33 cm, total phosphorus 0.20-0.54 mg/L, chlorophyll-a 13.76-19.56 μg/L, depth 148.67-485 cm, temperature 27.33-29.33oC, pH 5, dissolved oxygen 4.10-7.69 mg/L, and free carbondioxide 3.32-7.32 mg/L. Trophic State Index value of the Bandar Kayangan Lembah Sari Reservoir was 68.17-72.25, and it indicates that the Bandar Kayangan water is inmedium to heavy eutrophic condition. Keywords:Ambang River, Merbau River, Carlson’sTrophic State Index, Water Quality

Abstract

AbstractNygard Index can be used to determine the trophic state of waters. Calculation of this index is based on the number of phytoplankton species that are belonged to these following groups, namely Chlorococcales, Euglenophyceae, Centric diatom, Myxophyceae and Desmidiaceae. To understand the trophic state of the Pekak Lake, a research has been conducted in March-April 2018. There were 3 sampling stations, namely S1 (in the inlet, from the Kampar  River), S2 (in the middle of the lake) and S3 (in the end of the lake). In each station there were two sampling points, in the surface (0.2 m), and 1 Secchi depth (0.75 m). Samplings were conducted 3 times, once/week. Water quality parameters measured were phytoplankton, transparency, temperature, pH, nitrate, phosphate, dissolved oxygen and free carbon dioxide. Results shown that there are 63 species of phytoplankton present, namely Class Chlorophyceae (22 species), Class Zygnematophyceae (16 species), Bacillariophyceae (12 species), Class Euglenophyceae (4 species),  and Class Myxophyceae (3 species), and Class Cryptophyceae (1 species). The water quality parameters are as follows: transparency 68.5-76.8 cm, temperature 28-30 0C, pH 5, nitrate 0.05-0.14 mg/L, phosphate 0.06-0.11 mg/L, dissolved oxygen 5.13-6.40 mg/L, free carbon dioxide 8.23-15.48 mg/L. Nygaard Index value of the Pekak Lake was 1.8–2.37, and it can be categorized as mesotrophic to eutrophic. Keywords: Oxbow Lake, Phytoplankton, Mesotrophic, Water Quality.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Kampar Kiri River is one of the rivers that are polluted due to human activities along the river. Decrement of water quality may affect the growth of fish and it is reflected on the pattern of otolith growth rings. A research aims to understand the pattern of otolith growth rings in the  H. macrolepidota was conducted in January to March 2018. Sampling was done four times for two months. The fish was captured using a gill net. There were 52 fishes (10 females and 42 males) captured. The otolith (sagita) were removed and shaved. Results shown that the otolith length was 0.75 to 6 mm and their weight was 0.0008 to 0.02 g. There were dark and light rings in the otolith. Twenty six fishes had dark rings (1-3 rings/fish). Distance between the nucleus and the first dark ring was 0.02 to 0.5 mm. These data indicates that the formation of the dark ring may not be affected by periodical condition such as season or periodic physiological condition such as reproductive activities. The formation of dark ring in the otolith seem to be individual and not concurrent in fish population. Water quality in the sampling area was good (temperature 26 to 27⁰C; pH 5; DO 2.2 to 3.9 mg/L; and CO2 9.9 to 15.9 mg/L) and it may be sufficient to support the life of the fish. Keywords: Polluted water, dark ring, relative growth, sagita

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe activities of petroleum drilling, ferry ports and leakages of underwater pipeline caused oil pollution in the coastal area of the Mengkapan Village. The oil pollutant will be carried by the waves  and settles to the sediment and it may causing  genetic changing in the microorganisms present in the sediment. The presence of oil pollution may trigger gene mutation in specific bacteria and it may be able to produce biosurfactants for degrading the oil. A study aims to investigate of biosurfactant producing bacteria in the sediment of the  coastal area of Mengkapan Village was conducted from March to May 2018. There were 2 stations, in the petroleum drilling area (St1) and in the Tanjung Buton port (St2). Morphological and biochemical characeristics shown that there were 3 bacteria species, namely Bacillus sp, Proteus sp and Pseudomonas sp present. Emulsification Index of the Bacillus sp was 42,85%, the Pseudomonas sp was  53%,and  Proteus sp was 25%, indicating that all bacteria obtained were potencial for producing biosurfactant. Keyword : Oil pollutant ,Pseudomonas sp , Emulsification Index, Biodegradation
