Abstract

The peat water has low pH and it can be improved by adding lime and alum. The use of lime, however, produced relatively large amount of sediment. To understand the effectiveness of combined lime and alum in osmofilter paper package to increase the pH and reduce the sediment, a study has been conducted on January-April 2016.Combination of 1.7 g lime and 1.45 g alum were wrapped using osmofilter paper and were immersed in 8 L of different pH (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) peat water. After being kept for 45 minutes, the water quality was checked. Result shown that the package of lime and alum was effective to improve the pH and reduced the sediment. In all treatments the pH increase up to 9, while the sediment decrease, from 38.34 to 34.34. The treated water was use to rear Cyprinus carpio and Oreochromis niloticus seedlings. By the 4th day the survival rate of both fish species was 90 %. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded that the use of combined lime, alum and osmofilter paper is effective to improve the quality of peat water.Keyword : Peat Water, Osmofilter paper, Alum, Lime

Abstract

Bandar Kayangan Lembah Sari Lake is a man-made lake that is used to store water for agricultural and tourism purposes. There are many aquatic plants present in the lake and to understand the types and coverage area of the aquatic plant, a study was conducted in March-April 2016. A purposive sampling method was applied in collecting the aquatic plant. The plants were then identified based on Van Steenis (1981). The map of Bandar Kayangan Lake was downloaded using Google Earth application and the aquatic plant coverage areas in each station were then measured as a basis to predict the plant coverage area in the lake. The aquatic plants found during this study consisted of 4 families and 4 species, they were Cyperus rotundus, Paspalum commersoni, Nymphaea sp., and Pandanus sp. The aquatic plants coverage in the Bandar Kayangan Lake was around 18% and it is categorized as rare. The area that is not covered by aquatic plant was around 82% (1,054.058 m2).Keyword : Bandar Kayangan Lembah Sari Lake, aquatic plant, coverage area.

Abstract

Fish behavior is affected by environmental condition, including photoperiod. Tounderstand the effects of different photoperiod toward O. hypophthalmus behavior, astudy has been conducted in Oktober 2015. The fish was reared in fiber tanks size100cm X 50cm dan height 40cm with water circulation system. The tanks were placedunder plastic tents that were completed with light bulb and timer to adjust the time. There were 5 treatments applied, namely Control (natural photoperiod), 24 hours dark(24D), 16 dark and 8 hours light (16D8L), 8 dark and 16 hours light (8D16L) and 24hours light (24L). Fish behavior was monitored hourly for a 72 hours periodcontinuously. Swimming and schooling activities, fish position and respons to light andfood were noted. Results shown that the photoperiod clearly affects the behavior offish. During the dark, fish tend to be in the surface, swimming actively, do not form agroup, sensitive to light and very agresive to take food provided. In contrast, during thelight period, fish less active, tend to form a group in the bottom of the tank, lesssensitive to light and less aggresive in taking food. Based on data obtained, it can beconcluded that photoperiod is affect the behavior of fish in general. Keywords: photoperiod, Ompok hypophthalmus, Behavior, Dark, Light

Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the dose of recombinant growthhormone (rGH) of Ephinepelus lanceolatus supplemented in the commercial diet thatgenerates the best performance on body weight, body length, specific growth rate, survival rate, feed efficiency, and feed convertion rate of river catfish (Hemibagrusnemurus) in aquaponic system using leafy vegetable (Ipomea reptans). The dose ofrGH administrated was 3, 6, and 9 mg/kg of commercial feed and no rGHsupplementation as control. Each treatment was design in triplicates. Catfishes ataverage 5-7 cm were reared in a fiber tank in a density 23 fish/tank for 30 days. Thefish were fed with the rGH suplplemented diet once a three days at satiation. Theresults showed that growth body weight (4,84 g) and length (3,4 cm), feed efficiency(94.76%) of fish treated by rGH with the doses of 3 mg/kg feed was higher (P<0.05)than other treatment. Specific growth rate of 3 mg/kg feed was 3,69 %, higher thanother treatment. Feed convertion rate of rGH 3mg/kg feed (1.06) was lower than othertreatment. Thus, supplementation rGH 3 mg/kg feed of catfish once in three days canbe applied in enhance the growth catfish (Hemibagrus nemurus) with a bestperformance of growth.Keyword: river catfish, recombinant growth hormone, aquaponic
