Abstract

In the Karimun Besar Island, there are tin industries and it may produce heavy metal pollutant that contaminate the surrounding waters. To understand the lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) concentration in the coastal waters of the island, a research was conducted in December-January 2016. There were 3 stations, around the fishermen village (S1); in the harbor (S2) and in the recreation area (S3). Water and sediment were sampled 3 times, once/ 2 days. The samples were then analyzed using an AAS. Results shown that the highest Pb concentrations in the seawater and fresh water are obtained in the S2 (0,1865 mg/L and 0.0642 mg/L respectively), while the highest Pb in the sediment was in the S1 (0,1942 g/g). The highest Cu concentration in the seawater was in the S1 (0,0388 mg/L), while the highest Cu concentration in the freshwater and sediment was in the S3 (0,0317 mg/L and 0,1296 g/g respectively). In general, the concentration of Pb and Cu in the Southern Coast of the Karimun Besar Island is normal, its values are below the ERL and ERM standard. Based on the Igeo standard, the sediments can be categorized as non-polluted.Keyword : Heavy Metal, Seawater, Sediment, Karimun, Lead, Copper

Abstract

Tajwid lake is an oxbow lake that receives water from the Kampar River during rainy season. To understand the concentration of chlorophyll-a in this lake, a research has been conducted in February 2016. The chlorophyll-a samples were collected from three statios namely station I (in let), station II (in the middle of lake) and station III (in the end of the lake). In each station, the water was sampled from the surface, in middle of water column and in the bottom of the lake. Sampling was done three times, once per week. Results shown that chlorophyll-a concentration in the surface was 13.52-15.75 μg/L, in the middle of water column was 8.18-10.85 μg/L, and in the bottom of the lake was 4.87-7.17 μg/L. Water quality results shown that transparency: 52-69 cm, depth: 6-12 m, temperature: 28-30 0C, pH: 5-6, DO: 2.3-8.3 mg/L, CO2: 4.9-13.9 mg/L, nitrate: 0.02-0.11 mg/L, phosphate: 0.02-0.10 mg/L, and phytoplankton abundance: 723-4,485 cells/L. The concentration of chlorophyll-a in Tajwid Lake indicate that the trophic status of the lake was mesotrophic, the water quality is good and it may be able to support the life of aquatic organisms. Keywords : Chlorophyll-a, mesotrophic, Tajwid Lake

Abstract

This study was conducted from March to April 2016 in the Laboratory of PhysicalOceanography Marine Science Department Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science University ofRiau. This study aimed to explain a relationship between current velocity and wave propagationspeed, and sediment particle size to the results of sediment transport volume. The method used wasan experimental design with 4 treatments. Current velocity and wave propagation speed wereconsists of 2 level factors (V1 and V2) and sediment particle size were consists of 2 level factors(D1 and D2). Observations used the flume tank and wave generator for 10 minutes. The resultsshow that there was an effect of current velocity, wave propagation, and sediment particle size tosediment transport volume. If the current velocity increase so sediment transport volume alsoincreased. While if sediment particle size increase the sediment transport volume decreased.Observations in the laboratory and calculation of sediment transport that used an Engelund-Hansenformula showed differences. Differences caused by oceanographic factors such as water andsediment density, gravity, water depth, salinity and consistency. Keywords: The Volume of Sediment Transport, Current, Wave, Particle, Velocity.
