Abstract

One of the raw materials for propellant or explosive double base type is nitrocellulose. Availability of cellulose which is the main component of biomass is very abundant in Indonesia, particularly solid waste palm oil industry. With cellulose content of 34.89%, palm midrib is one solid waste palm with potential to be used as the main raw material cellulose. Purity cellulose levels that must be achieved to produce nitrocellulose propellant as raw material is more than 92%. So as to improve the purity of the cellulose in the palm midrib must be purified using hydrogen peroxide, which is initiated by the hydrolysis with EFB ash extract. Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that can be used for the bleaching process, because this compound is more environmentally friendly than chlorine. The purpose of this is to obtain the best conditions to obtain cellulose purity of more than 92%. The bleaching process is done by varying the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%) and pH (8, 9, 10, 11, 12). Pulp composition analysis of purified cellulose. Obtained the best process conditions is the concentration of 3% hydrogen peroxide and pH 9 with 95.11% purity cellulose.  Keywords :  Palm Midrib, Bleaching, Hydrogen Peroxide, Cellulose

Abstract

Bioethanol is an ethanol which can be obtained by glucose fermentation from carbohydrate source that uses microorganisms help continued by distillation process. Adsorption is a separation process where the components of a fluid phase moves to the absorbing surface of the solid (adsorbent). In the fermentation process pineapple peel waste with Zymomonas mobilis and distillation process obtained the highest ethanol content of 11%, ethanol content obtained is not too high, so it needs a process that can increase the purity of bioethanol with distillation adsorption process. Bioethanol purification process using natural zeolite as adsorbent with variable change is the type of adsorbent of natural zeolite without activation with base activated natural zeolite and bioethanol:adsorbent ratio is 1:0,35 ; 1:0,5 ; 1:0,65. From the experimental results indicated that the highest ethanol content obtained of the zeolite and ethanol massa ratio of 1:0,65 with using base activated natural zeolite, ethanol content of 99,8% which fulfill Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for both technical ethanol and denatured bioethanol specification.  Keywords : bioethanol, solid state fermentation, pineapple peel, distillation adsorption, natural zeolite

Abstract

POFA is an agrowaste ash which is produced from fibers, nut shells, and empty fruit bunches when burnt at temperatures of about 800-10000C in boiler. The production of POFA is rising every year, it is disposed for landfills, now become an important environmental disposal issue. A large area is required for the disposal of these POFA waste materials. The landfill of POFA is the problem for the palm oil industry when it is not reused for any work. POFA contains a large amount of silicon dioxide with high pozzolanic reactivity and has high potential to be used in any engineering work. This research examined POFA characteristics in geotechnical application and its influence by curing periods on 0, 7 and 28 days. In this paper, physical and mechanical characteristics of POFA in geotechnical work will be shown. The chemical composition of POFA prove the existence of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and CaO as important substances supporting pozzolan reaction during cured. The result shows that the characteristic of POFA has similar behaviour with sands. Coefficient of permeability decreased during curing periods. Besides, cohesion shear strength, angle of friction, cohesion undrained, and CBR value are improve during curing periods.    Keywords:  POFA, geotechnic, pozzolan reaction

Abstract

Earthquakes from 2004 to 2009 in Indonesia has resulted in many deaths and the collapse of the building. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has published FEMA 310 as a handbook for seismic evaluation of buildings. FEMA 310 evaluation includes evaluation of phase one, two and three. Evaluation of phase one (tier 1) using a checklist of structural, non-structural, region of low sismicity and also geologic site hazard and foundation. Evaluation of the second phase (tier 2) is a linear analysis for structures such as static equivalence analysis and dynamic. Evaluation of the third stage (tier 3) is non- linear analysis of such a pushover. If the evaluation phase of the assessment does not meet the criteria, then it should proceed to the second phase, as well as for further evaluation. The building is located in the city of Pekanbaru that is reviewed and evaluated up to the second phase. Calculation of seismic shear force have used seismic hazard map of Indonesia has been published in 2010. This is one step to improve the performance of structures to resist earthquakes, it is expected that this will reduce structural damage and avoid loss of life. The results of the evaluation phase one (tier 1) that has been conducted shows that the buildings that were reviewed non- compliant for weak story and soft story. Evaluation of the second phase (tier 2) shows that all the columns in buildings were able to bear the load, while some beam were over strength, however both of building can be declared the buildings are safe against earthquakes (compliant). Keywords : Earthquake, FEMA 310, quick assessment, seismic evaluation
