Abstract

This is a  preliminary study about the level of sexual harassment in Aceh, this study aims at describing the profile of victims of sexual abuse, sexual harassment diversity of forms of behavior that is natural, the environment in which the abuse and the causes that trigger sexual abuse so that they can be the basis of subsequent policy research in order to formulate various sexual harassment prevention strategies. A a survey is conducted by using quantitative and qualitative descriptive approaches with sample selection refers to the consideration of the sampling area. Eight regencies/cities, namely Subulussalam/Singkil  district and South Aceh's western coastal areas, Aceh Besar, Pidie, North Aceh and East Aceh's eastern coastal region and the Southeast Aceh Regency and Central Aceh for the central region. Data obtained through documentation and interviews were analyzed using the descriptive statistics (percentage tabulations, graphs and charts) as well as a comparative analysis of narrative logic. The results showed that, majority of sexual abuse victims are children and young women aged under 18 years old, still a student, the socioeconomic status of the family was in the middle to lower. While the perpetrators including men who come from different backgrounds in terms of ages, education, occupation, socioeconomic status, and place of residence. Forms of sexual abuse cases were rape and sexual abuse, in addition to the act of sodomy in a minority of cases. The cause of sexual harassment is a lack of parental supervision of children, the declining morality of the offender and economic factors. Psychological impact experienced by victims of sexual harassment is that they tend to be aloof, socially isolated people, expelled from school, self-blame, and prolonged trauma. The study recommends that forms of prevention and mitigation of sexual abuse should be implemented.

Abstract

In recent years, the numbers of international students in universities have increased rapidly and have become an important industry and financial resource for the host countries. However, each host country has divergent policies and strategies regarding their international student i.e. tuition fees, scholarship scheme, visa regulation and alumni program. These differences can potentially determine financial benefit that they receive from the foreign students. For example, the tuition fees for international students in German Universities are relatively smaller compared to other countries in Europe. However, a study found that an aggregate value of economic impact of international students to German economic is relatively higher than in the Netherlands and other European countries. Moreover, the economic gains are not solely obtained from tuitions fees and other spending during the study period. Rather, the bigger financial impact can be obtained after the graduation of the international students. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the economic implication of international students for the host countries. More importantly, this study discusses strategies of host countries to optimize the economic impact from their international countries. To do so, three countries have been selected as the object of research, namely the USA, the UK, and Germany. Data is collected from secondary data i.e. academic articles, government reports, and non-governmental organizations reports. The results of this study found that the host countries have implemented different strategies in dealing with their international students that potentially create different scope of economic impact in their national economic. Finally, policy suggestions are proposed to enhance the economic benefit of international students for host countries

Abstract

Knowledge is something that is very vital in human life, especially in building the civilization of a nation. This study focuses its analysis on how the concept of knowledge and its worldview both from the perspectives of the West and Islam. The results showed that knowledge in the West is a rational idea constructed by individuals based on the empirical experience. The characteristics of knowledge in the perspective of the West is a systematic, objective, general, reliable, and communal. Furthermore, Western knowledge derived from reason and the senses and therefore contributes to the truth that is both realism and idealism that Western knowledge of truth because truth is relative to current knowledge can be aborted by the truth of the knowledge that comes next if deemed no longer relevant. While knowledge in Islam are referred to as "al-‘ilm", meaning the arrival of an active life and creative on the meaning of something that comes from God resulting in truth and reality through the senses, reason and scientific activity. As for the sources of knowledge in Islam there are two; the source of divine and human sources. Divine source consists of three parts; al-Qur'an, al-Sunnah, and intuition (inspiration). While human resources are divided into two; senses and minds. Because the sources of knowledge in Islam are various, then the truth is generated also vary and stratified, i.e., the absolute truth (al-Qur'an), the truth of the original and authentic, but has dual implications (al-Sunnah and inspiration), and truth chances are still open to debate (mind and the senses). Comparison between the Western and Islamic knowledge have an impact on the overall concept of knowledge are summarized in different characters. Western knowledge has the character to be skeptical, rational-empirical, dichotomous, positivistic-objective, and is antimetafisika. While the character of knowledge in Islam is to be relied on spiritual strength (al-Qur'an), the harmonious relationship between revelation with reason, has a theocentric orientation, and the value-bounded.

Abstract

The utilisation of flash cards is one of the teaching methods in early literacy learning of the subject of Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language). These are simply cards that display the written words. Flash cards can be bright and colourful and make a real impact on visual learners. Among many methods, it was considered one of the best fits for children at reading age. This article aims to determine the extent to which the use of flash card as a medium of learning could improve the reading skills of students of class I at the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri-MIN (National Islamic Elementary School) Rukoh, Banda Aceh for the academic year of 2012/2013. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR), which is the research conducted in a classroom using the specific learning media, which in this regard is the flash cards. Data for this study was gathered through experiments, observation during the learning process, and interview with several selected teachers and students. Data were then analysed using the descriptive-comparative technique, in which each test results of the students’ reading abilities were compared to each other. The study found that the teaching process using flash cards as a medium of learning was able to improve early reading skills of students of MIN Rukoh, Banda Aceh

Abstract

Discipline is one of the important aspects of an individual's life. This study aims was to examine and analyze the level of learning the discipline of the student in SMAN 5 Banda Aceh before and after groups counseling service using self-management techniques and to determine whether there is a significant increase learning discipline between before and after self-management techniques. The quantitative approach with the pre-experiment, one group pre-post test design was performed in this study. Samples were taken by purposive sampling as much as 10 students of the 30 students that suspected of having a low level of learning discipline. The collecting data were used a learning discipline questionnaires by using Likert Scale 1-4. Data were analyzed by non-parametric statistical test (Sign test). The results showed that the level of the student's learning discipline was increased after given self-management techniques as many as 10 treatments, with a mean pre-post test 150.7 147.5 i.e. from the low category to a higher category, with a positive change. Based on binomial table where n= 10 and p 0.05, the probability of X 10 is 0.001. It is concluded that the self-management techniques can improve students’ learning discipline.

Abstract

One of the factors that lead to juvenile delinquency is the lack of father’s  involvement. This study aimed to examine the relationship between father involvement and juvenile delinquency on adolescents in Banda Aceh. A total of 335 adolescents aged 16 to 17 years old in Banda Aceh were selected using the multi stage cluster and disproportionate stratified random sampling. The instrument used in this study was an adapted of  Father Involvement Scale by Finley and Schwartz, and Self Reported Delinquency by Elliott and Ageton. Using the Spearman correlation analysis, the study found that was a negative and significant correlation between father involvement and juvenile delinquency on adolescents in Banda Aceh (r = −0,287 p 0,05). It indicated that the high score of father’s involvement would decrease adolescent’s juvenile delinquency score and vice versa. Thus, it can be concluded that the adolescents who have the high level of father involvement are less likely to participate in negative behavior.Salah satu faktor yang menyebabkan perilaku kenakalan remaja adalah kurangnya keterlibatan ayah dalam pengasuhan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan keterlibatan ayah dalam pengasuhan dengan kenakalan pada remaja di Kota Banda Aceh. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik multi stage sampling, yaitu cluster sampling dan disproportionate stratified random sampling. Sampel yang terlibat dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 335 remaja berusia 16 sampai 17 tahun di  Kota Banda Aceh. Alat ukur yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah skala adaptasi Father Involvement Scale yang disusun oleh Finley dan Schwartz serta Self-Reported Delinquency (SRD) yang disusun oleh Elliott dan Ageton. Hasil analisis data menggunakan teknik Spearman menunjukkan terdapat hubungan negatif dan signifikan antara keterlibatan ayah dengan kenakalan remaja (r = -0,287, p0,05).  Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa semakin tinggi keterlibatan ayah dalam pengasuhan maka semakin rendah kenakalan pada remaja dan begitupula sebaliknya. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa remaja yang melaporkan keterlibatan ayah yang tinggi dalam pengasuhan dapat mengurangi tingkat perilaku kenakalan pada remaja.

Abstract

Educational problematic and the alternative solutions of Senior High School in rural-isolated-small Island have been studied. The subject school was located in small village in Pulau Nasi Island, about one hour sailing by small boat from the state capital, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Data were collected based on structured interviews, questioners, direct observation and focus group discussion (FGD). The respondents were the school principal, teachers, students and representative community people as well as the Head of District Education Office. This study found that the subject school has C grade according to national education standard parameters and it has the lowest national examination score among senior high schools in the district. The majority of teachers (60%) do not stay on the isolated island and it caused the curriculum was not accomplished. Majority respondents said very often teachers were not in the classroom because they could not come to the island due to bad weather (high wave ocean) and other reasons. They came to the school only at their teaching hours and then back to the mainland so that their interaction time with the students was very limited. The characteristics of teachers who stay on the island are those who married or have relative with the local resident and temporary contracted teachers who are proposing to be hired as government permanent teachers. Majority teachers who already hold permanent job status stay on the mainland (city) and they prefer to take risk sailing to the island weekly rather than staying in the village. These phenomena do not occur in the bigger island (Simeulue) where is a district capital with town facilities. To overcome this problem, the majority respondents suggested several alternative solutions including improvement in the school management such as hiring new contracted teachers to replace current teachers who are not willing stay on the small island. The district education was also insisted to implement education regulation consistently

Abstract

This study aims to identify the relationship between willingness and pressure amongst teacher of Economics in implementing kurikulum tingkat satuan pendidikan. This study used a questionnaire with 109 teachers from twelve middle schools in Aceh Besar district, who were directly involved in the process of implementing the curriculum. Descriptive analyses used were frequency, percent, mean value and standard deviation. It was found that the level of willingness of the teachers was at a moderate level with an overall mean value of 3.46. Meanwhile, the level of pressure was at a high level with an overall mean value at 3.56. An inferential statistical correlation test was used to test hypotheses. It was found that there was a relationship between the level of willingness and the level of pressure. It can be concluded that willingness will influence the pressure of the teachers to implement the curriculum.

Abstract

The development of concepts and theories of Islamic Education have started since the First Conference on Muslim Education in Mecca in 1997. However, throughout these concepts, the Muslims scholars fail to link the concept of Islamic Education with the struggle for social justice in the Muslim community. This paper aims to discuss why social justice issues seem to be overlooked, this paper also offers recommendation on reframing of Islamic educational theory. For this purpose, this paper analyzes documents resulted from the World Conferences of the Muslim Education, and from another conference with the theme Toward Construction of a Contemporary Islamic Educational Theory conducted in Amman-Jordan. The author found that Islamic education theories surprisingly devoid of social justice issues, and put more emphasis on individual development, simplification of the concept of society as mere group of individuals, and to avoid resistance (risks if taking confrontative issues such as social justice) from the dictatorial regimes holding power in Muslim countries

Abstract

The system of education plays a significant role in all aspects of human life, including in empowering the welfare of its citizens. A good system of education during the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam has led her people to be saluted and admired both by locals and foreigners. This study aims at discovering the problem hampering the system of education, focusing on the district of Aceh as a case study as well as providing the recommendation for enhancing its educational system. To establish a good educational system, we need to reform the curricula, renovate the educational facilities, empower lecturers’ abilities and skills, improve students’ quality, and shorten educational bureaucracy. To produce a knowledgeable and taqwa (pious) student, the curricula of Islamic educational system have to be in harmony with the Divine injunctions, al-Qur’an and Hadits. Then, the educational facilities, lecturers’ abilities, and skills of teaching and educational bureaucracy as well have to enhance and monitored regularly for from time to time. The experiences of success from other countries and universities in their adoption of Islamic educational system, such as International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) can be comprehensively learned as the basis for the future educational reforms. Finally, to make good educational system be realized, the government has also to actively cooperate and involve in empowering the educational system, inter alia, by providing sufficient budget for educational agenda.
