Abstract

he lineage of the children of adultery as agreed by religious scholars (‘ulamā’) and Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) is ascribed to the mother, not the father. This is due to the unclarity of the marital bond between the woman and the man who conduct adultery, and due to the uncertainty of sperms that fertilize the ovum (egg cell) of a woman. Consequently, the children of adultery become exiled and marginalized in society, bearing mistakes of their ‘parents’. In fact, Islam has emphasized that every child born is essentially chaste. If the child born from adultery is ascribed to the mother, he/she does not have whatever rights from the father. Therefore, it is important to review the question regarding the lineage of the children of adultery, in order to determine the future of the children. Based on the literature research with critical analysis method, this article argues that the children of adultery remain to be biologically ascribed to the father together with their rights from the latter. The children born from adultery do not bear the mistakes of their ‘parents.’ In the contemporary era, to determine the children lineage can use such a tool as DNA test that is believed as accurate.

Abstract

Ibn al-Haytham (965-1039) is so far known merely as a mathematician and scientist. It is understand-able because most of his available works at this time are on mathematics and science. As a result, researches on his philosophical, psychological, and theological thought are still lacking. This paper discusses Ibn al-Haytham’s philosophy of happiness, using historical research method by collecting and analyzing his works linguistically, particularly his Kitāb Thamarat al-Ḥikmah. The results reveal that Ibn al-Haytham, as well as Muslim philosophers of his time, accepted the concept of happiness from Greek philosophers, such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. However, he incorporated religio-metaphysical dimensions to his concept of happiness. This finding shows that Ibn al-Haytham is not only a mathematician and scientist, but also a philosopher like al-Fārābī, Ibn Miskawayh, and al-Ghazālī.

Abstract

Nowadays, the proliferation of radicalization among the so-called Generation Z in the online space shows an alarming phenomenon. This article is to explore how online media is used by a woman of generation Z, Nurdhania, to access ideological propaganda of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The questions are how was the propaganda embedded in Nurdhania’s mind? How big are the Nurdhania’s commitment, involvement, and struggle in supporting ISIS? To answer these questions, this research used the method of ethnography, through the internet, of blogs and social media that belong to Nurdhania, and conducted an interview with one of her relatives in Yogyakarta. This article argues that Nurdhania was exposed to the ideology of ISIS because of (1) her confusion with the uncertainty of the future; (2) a ‘moral panic’ she had experienced; and (3) the Islamic State highlighted as the most ideal state system.

Abstract

Religious discourse in political praxis always attracts the attention of many experts. Some of them consider that the use of religion represents more pragmatic interest of political parties for stimulating voters in general elections. This study argues that the use of religion in political praxis is not merely for the pragmatic purposes of the party, but also for the party’s idealistic goals. This is the reason that makes the implementation of political education important for integrating religious dimensions. NasDem Party of East Java is known for its concern in promoting its ideal image as a nationalist-religious party. In order to realize its image and political vision, NasDem carries religion-based politics in its political education. This article aims to study issues such as how religious dimensions are contained in political education and how the orientations of the agency of political party are. This article found an important finding that there were two dimensions in the implementation of political education, namely the ritual-symbolic and substantive religious dimensions. The orientation of the symbolic religious dimension is to strengthen the faith and the creation of nationality-religious integrated understanding, while the substantive dimension is oriented to shape a humanist-religious consciousness and God’s mandate in the political role.

Abstract

Pondok Pesantren Salaf Al-Anwar, Sarang, Rembang, Central Java, is one of pondok pensantrens based on Nahdlatul Ulama’s moderate (tawassuṭ) understanding, and adheres to the teachings of ahl al-sunnah wa al-jamā‘ah. The purpose of this study is to understand and describe the religious moderation model developed and implemented at Al-Anwar. The results of this descriptive-qualitative study show that the religious moderation model carried out at Al-Anwar is a model of implementing an educational system based on the Salaf curriculum, in which message materials are based on the books of turāth. This model, along with kiai’s strong credibility, becomes an effective media in instilling moderate attitudes for ‘santri’ and the society. The implementation of religious moderation in pesantren can be done through the attitudes and behaviours of santri, which are always guided by the pesantren’s two principles of thought: Firstly, ‘santri’ must have special knowledge as a provision for themselves and general knowledge to face their community. Secondly, ‘santri’ in solving social problems must always refer to the four pillars of the nation.

Abstract

The popularity of al-Bukhārī as the expert of ḥadīth is indisputable; he reached his top figure; his name becomes a guarantee of his ḥadīth validity; besides, he is also well-known as the expert of Islamic law (faqīh). However, his expertise in Islamic law is often disregarded. In fact, the authority of al-Bukhārī in Islamic law reaches its peak as an absolute mujtahid (mujtahid muṭṭlaq). This phenomenon raised some questions. Firstly, is al-Bukhārī affiliated with one of the established Sunnī madhhabs? When a mujtahid has reached his absolute rank, he needs his own fiqh methodology construction, other than following another methodology. Secondly, does al-Bukhārī have his own methodology? Frankly, an absolute mujtahid has an opportunity to establish his own madhhab ordained to his name. Thirdly, why is al-Bukhārī madhhab unpopular among Sunnī madhhabs? This article found that al-Bukhārī is not affiliated to certain madhhabs, then explored the methodology formation as well as other factors underlying the failure of formation of al-Bukhārī’s madhhab.

Abstract

This article seeks to explore Niẓām al-Mulk’s political career and his contribution to Islamic political thought. As a prominent wazīr of two Seljuq sultans, Alp Arslan and Malikshah, Niẓām al-Mulk played an important role in running the government for almost 30 years. His adherence to Sunni theological doctrines and Shafi'i school of law has made him a defender of Sunnism against other sects like Ismailism. As a political figure and thinker, Niẓām al-Mulk regarded justice and religion as a fundamental basis for the state. In Siyāsat-nāma, he elaborates many political bodies needed to build a strong state and government, such as wazīr, qādī, tax collectors, military, and intelligent agency. It can be argued that Niẓām al-Mulk’s political thought as formulated in his work, Siyāsat-nāma (the Book of Government), is based on his political and governmental experiences, his understanding of Islamic doctrines, and Persian political traditions.

Abstract

This article describes the dynamics of da‘wa movement of Salafis and their response to its stigmatization as being heretical and radical. The phenomenon of radical movements with their terrorist actions shapes the stigma of being radical to the Salafis. The spread and acceleration of the Salafi movement have put the da‘wa of the traditionalists in trouble. The stigma of Salafis as being radical and heretical results in the resistance against the Salafis to stop their da‘wa in many places. The stigmatization of the Salafis as being radical and intolerant drives the Salafis to show their identity as unidentical with the stigmatization. A number of persecutions towards the Salafis is the implication of this stigma. This article has resulted from interviews with Salafi figures and dā‘īs who felt annoyed with the stigmatization. The appearance of Salafis which resembles those stigmatized as radicals lead to the emergence of public opinion that the Salafis are radical, while on the contrary, this article finds that the Salafis in fact fight against radical thoughts that lead to radical and terrorist actions.

Abstract

The term “halal” (ḥalāl) is now not only the domain of religious studies but also has implications for socio-economic studies. Halal discourse finds space for debate in lecture studies, seminars, and conferences both at local and international levels. The business sector also gives serious attention to the halal labelling of the products produced. It is a fact that halal claims have become widespread and become a product phenomenon not only in Indonesia, but also in the world. This phenomenon needs to be seen and examined whether it is as a form of religious awareness and obedience or just a business-oriented trending calculation. By using Habermas’ critical theory, this study reveals that “halal” can be interpreted as a phenomenon of identity disclosure both in religious, social, and state life. “Halal” is not only related to the issue of whether or not it is permissible, but also has an influence on various lines of life, whether religious, social, cultural, political, or economic. In addition, this study also reveals that the “halalization” of products, both goods and services, raises halal consumption behaviour as a form of religious obedience, even though this is not actually a measure of the religiosity of a religious community.
