The development of Islam in Indonesia cannot be separated from the role and influence of Islamic organizations. Islamic organizations in this region are usually divided into two; traditionalist and modernist. One of the Islamic organizations labelled as traditionalists is Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah. Studies on Al Washliyah have been carried out, but the research on the role of Al Washliyah in developing the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā'ah school has not been carried out and is still neglected. This article aims to examine the role of the Al Washliyah organization in strengthening the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā'ah school in Indonesia. By combining library and field studies, this study found that Al Washliyah played an active role in developing the thought of the school through its institution called the Al Washliyah Fatwa Council, while the scholars of Al Washliyah had produced works in theology in line with the framework of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah.

Materialism and consumerism influence people’s consumption behaviour, considering that the purpose of consumption is not only to fulfil life’s needs but also for mere satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of Islamization of economics, especially the theory of consumption, referring to the theory of Islamization of science of al-Attas and al-Faruqi. The results of this study indicate that the Islamization of economics in consumption theory is very important to liberate society from the secular doctrine of materialism; Islamizing the goods and services concept by limiting it with the term of ḥalālan ṭayyiban; incorporating the element of maṣlaḥah as the main foundation in consumption instead of satisfaction. With the Islamization of economics on consumption theory, it is hoped that it can provide a change and enlightenment, particularly in the consumption behaviour of the Muslim community, and generally for economic development.

This study employs a qualitative approach with a library method, combined with the perspective of the sociology of religion. Theoretically, this study is aimed to enrich the scholarship on social and religious studies, and practically to build Islamic culture that upholds the values of moderatism. The findings of this study contain an in-depth description of local wisdom values of pesantren in Madura, their role in, and influence on, the formation of Islamic moderatism among the Madurese community.

For Javanese, one way to cure the sick is to do suwuk (jampi). Suwuk tradition, namely healing by reciting mantras (certain readings) that are blown on the crown of the patient and sometimes also use water media, especially for some modern Muslims, was initially seen as a healing practice that contains elements of shirk because it was considered not in accordance with the principles of Islamic 'aqīdah. Today, this view begins to change after a normative source has been found from a number of traditions that allow ruqyah that works similar to suwuk. It was also strengthened by the results of experiments and the findings of a number of scientists about the effect of certain readings and the wonders of water. This article will explain the tradition of suwuk which is the same as ruqyah, then elaborate normative sources of the Qur’ān and the Ḥadīth which legalize it and the view of modern science that supports it, so that its existence is still relevant to modernity.

The word kāfir is always interesting to be interpreted. Basically, this word is used by the Qur’ān to mention the unbelievers of Allah and who are hostile to Muslims in the process of Islamic da’wah. But this article will describe the use of the word kāfir in the contemporary era. Is it still relevant to be mentioned for the unbeliever of Allah? Dose it has another interpretation term in real life and evident? To answer these questions, Izzat Darwazah’s view on kāfir in the Qur’ān, i.e., al-Kāfir will be conducted as a model of interpretation. This article finds that the word kāfir, officially, cannot be removed from the Qur’ān and intellectual discourse. However, it will not be relevant to call the unbeliever as kāfir. Yet, the common word used in the democratic era is non-Muslim. This word also will eliminate the barrier between Muslim and the unbeliever in a plural society; and as linguistic analysis, more compatible than kāfir which had metaphor meaning.

Islamic and political discourse in Indonesia has had a long experience. Since Indonesia’s independence, the discourse on political Islam has become a fundamental conversation, especially at the beginning of independence. The conversation continued well in the New Order era and got strengthened in the era of bureaucratic reform. If in the New Order era, political Islam was strongly suppressed, so that it had almost no land to develop, then in the era of bureaucratic reform it became even stronger. The emergence of radical and extreme Islamic groups marked the growing strength of the Islamic era which carried the khilāfah movement. In the midst of this reality, moderate Islam emerged, which carried the theme of Nusantara Islam and Progressive Islam. Both of them were imaginatively contemplated by the Nur Syam with the conception of Progressive Nusantara Islam projected to be a permanent solution to overcome the radical Islam in Indonesia.

The soul is one of the topics that really attracts the attention of Muslim and Western scientists. Not a few of those who spend their time to study this problem. However, the study of the soul in the West is not based on religion. In contrast to Muslim scientists who make religion as the footing. This paper intends to discuss the concept of the soul emphasized by one of the Muslim scientists, Ibn Sīnā. By using the descriptive-analysis method, this study produces three important conclusions. First, the soul is the initial perfection to make a real human being. Second, the soul is eternal and does not go along with the destruction of the body. Third, when the soul is separated from the body and is eternal, it has a degree of happiness and misery. To reveal more deeply about the nature of the soul and its existence is very important to discuss.

This article aims to discuss the relationship between Ahmad Lutfi Fathullah and digitalization of Ḥadīth in Indonesia. The emergence of digitalization of Ḥadith in Indonesia can be associated with one of the leading scholars in the field of Ḥadīth, namely Ahmad Lutfi Fathullah through the Center of Ḥadīth Studies (PKH). The reason for the efforts of Ḥadīth digitalization by Ahmad Lutfi Fathullah departed from the awareness to maintain the existence of Ḥadīth studies in the modern era that demands the use of technological tools. The effort to digitalize the Ḥadīth as the result of collaboration with the use of technology has now given birth to a variety of digital Ḥadīth products, such as software, websites, android applications and Ḥadīth visualization. The effort to digitalize the Ḥadīth, one of which is undertaken by Ahmad Lutfi Fathullah at this time, has made the tradition of Ḥadīth studies, especially in Indonesia experience a dynamic orientation and transformation of Ḥadīth studies.

Since Nahdlatul Ulama scholars have been preaching Islamic knowledge using language and the social culture of their audience, the message of preachings (da‘wa) is easily absorbed by the audience. Such Islamic da‘wa is recognised as a cultural Islamic da‘wa, making Islam accommodative to the local culture without reducing any of the values of Islamic principles; and challenging the radical Islamic discourse strongly emerg-ing in post-reformasi Indonesia. This article would revisit the concept of cultural Islamic da‘wa developed by Nahdlatul Ulama scholars, by tracing the strong chains of its genealogies, then exploring the strategies conducted in line with the dream of displaying a “soft” face of Islam in Indonesia. As a result, this article argues that the cultural Islamic da‘wa of Nahdlatul Ulama scholars is inspired by, even adopts to, that of Walisongo in the 15th and 16th centuries Indonesia. Its aim is to make sharī‘ah applicated substantively, other than normatively, by the society, through a strategy of cultural approaches, rather than structural ones.

his research is focused on the regulation of implementing guarantee for halal products in Indonesia and crucial issues related to them. This research is normative juridical research using a statute approach. The conclusions of this study include; first, there are several crucial issues and topics relating to the implementation of guarantee of halal products in Indonesia, namely halal certification, mandatory and voluntary in halal certification, criminal provisions, and halal product guarantee management institutions. Second, the regulation of halal product guarantees when viewed from the Statute Approach can be analyzed using three legal principles: (1) lex superior derogat legi inferiori concludes that all rules for guaranteeing lower halal products are replaced by the higher ones; (2) lex specialis derogat legi generali confirms that the JPH Law is a specific regulation that regulates the guarantee of halal products; and (3) lex posterior derogat legi priori requires that the rules for guaranteeing halal products as contained in the JPH Law replace the guarantee rules for halal products that existed in the previous period.
