Abstract

This article seeks to examine Fethullah Gulen’s da‘wah activities by which he integrates his movement into the globalized world. Despite the fact that Turkish Coup in 2016 tarnished Gulen and his movement, and scholars come to question Gulen’s intentions, Gulen’s activities are to be explored so as for Islamic movements somewhere else to emulate his success in da‘wah. This article offers a perspective using the da‘wah approach. Question under discussion in this article is as to which steps of da‘wah lead Gulen movement to be a respected Islamic movement prior to the 2016. Gulen managed to widen the da‘wah from merely conventional da‘wah such a that of preaching into educations, dialogues, and economic. It is indeed Gulen’s emotional preaching that fascinates listeners and drives them voluntarily to engage in his activities of da‘wah and to give hand to his missionary works which include building schools, TV stations, radios, hospitals, and banks. Gulen’s da‘wah in economic goes in line with his effort to broaden his influence on international level which in turn leads the movement integrated into the global economy. It is interfaith dialogue and pluralism that bring Gulen into integrating Islam with cosmopolitanism in the globalized world. Muslims no longer belong solely to ummah, but they are citizen of the globalized world.

Abstract

The development of ḥadīth in Indonesia needs an epistemological change, from ideological to critical reasoning. If the epistemology does not change, the development of hadith will be stagnant. Ḥadīth studies will only repeat the views of scholars from the classical period that cannot be applied in Indonesian context, or even will not be able to contribute to solve socio-religious problems in modern society. It is because the development of method in understanding hadith is not only influenced by time and situation, but also by changes in epistemology. A contemporary thinker, Muḥammad Shaḥrūr has a controversial theory of hadith understanding where he uses burhānÄ« epistemology, an epistemology that prioritizes reason rather than text or intuition. The implication of Shaḥrūr's thought in the domain of contemporary ḥadīth studies will imply that hadith studies will take into account historical factors and social sciences to grasp meaning relevant and compatible with the principle of humanism. This is of course relevant with the principle of Islam, ṣāliḥ kull zamān wa makān.

Abstract

This article explores the thought of Abdul Karim Amrullah on the issue of rābiṭah in Minangkabau. He is regarded as very critical in responding social and cultural life, especially relating to tarekat. All behaviors of society should have basis from the Qur'ān and Sunnah. All acts which are not based on the Qur'ān and Sunnah are considered as innovation (bid'ah) that should be avoided. Amrullah categorically rejected rābiṭah for there was no sharī'ah basis for it, although the kaum tua (conservative) in Minangkabau attempted to conserve rābiṭah in their surau. Rābiṭah as one of wasīlah (mediator) is understood as a medium to reach God through substitute face. What is meant is the murshid who taught their followers to achieve the determined position in their own tarekat. Amrullah's criticism towards rābiṭah in Minangkabau initially resulted in resistance, especially among the founder of tarekat. However, in the course of time, the issue of tarekat declined and even underwent significant decay in Minangkabau.

Abstract

This paper aims to track the construction of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah reasoning and reading patterns of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah according to Ibn Taymīyah perspective. The study of the philosophy of Islamic Law in the perspective of Ibn Taymīyah in Islamic thought is still not much discussed, even not yet formulated with a comprehensive framework of construction of reason. Maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah in Ibn Taymīyah’s perspective has a reciprocal reading pattern in quadric jalb al-maṣlaḥah and daf‘ al-mafsadah at one time simultaneously. These quadrics here are relational dialectics between min jānib al-wujūd and min jānib al-‘adam. Ibn Taymīyah as one of the most knowledgeable scholars of science has a unique reading pattern on how the legal texts (ayāt al-aḥkām) and their intentions (al-maqāṣid) are dialecticalized.

Abstract

Abstract: What is the main factor of terrorism; Islamic doctrine, or political factor? There are three mainstream opinions provide theoretical reviews. Firstly, those who believe that the justification of acts of violence to terrorism is an inherent product of religious doctrine. Secondly, those who consider that terrorism is a profane matter have absolutely nothing to do with religion. Thirdly, the opinion which states that terrorism is syncretism and interrelated modification between politics and religion. This article tries to examine the three views above by dissecting other perspectives in order to get a clearer picture of the discourse of Islamism transforming into a radical movement leading to terrorism. Doctrinal and political motives are so strongly integrated and overlapping in the structure of the motives and actions of these radical groups. Departing from the view that Islamism is a movement that aims to make radical-revolutionary changes in social structure institutions, this article collects theories that can be used as maps to understand the construction of Islamism.

Abstract

This article focuses on the study of the contextualization of the meaning of the ḥadīth about tashabbuh using both macro and micro socio-historical study approach. The study was conducted to find the significance of the meaning contained in the ḥadīth about the prohibition of tashabbuh, using the study of ḥadīth literature and historical sources. The results of the study found that; (1) the study of the ḥadīth about the prohibition of tashabbuh cannot be understood by only using a textual-literal approach, because it can only narrow down the meaning of ḥadīth, so it is more likely to lead to a fundamentalist-radicalist understanding; (2) Studying the ḥadīths is to find the meaning behind the text, context, and contextualization of the ḥadīth, theologically normative aims to maintain the faith dan the belief in tawḥīd, while socially cultural aims to realize the Islamic foundation as tolerance and raḥmah; (3) there are two types of tashabbuh in the theological-normative domain; showing absolute prohibition, and social welfare; showing skill as long as it does not conflict with the basic rules of sharī'ah and realizes maṣlaḥah for human life.

Abstract

Baḥth al-masā’il is a forum in which traditionalist Muslims of Nahdlatul Ulama get their fatwas. Nahdlatul Ulama practices taqlīd and therefore madhhab in its fatwa by relying upon opinions of especially Shāfi‘ī jurists. Since 1992, some forward-minded people within Nahdlatul Ulama introduced the use of madhhab manhajī through istinbāṭ method in addition to madhhab qawlī. However, the co-existence of these two methods creates everlasting polarization within Nahdlatul Ulama. There once the division of application, though, in which manhajī was employed in mawḍū'īyah cases and qawlī was practised in wāqi‘īyah cases, but it did not last long. The National Congress of Nahdlatul Ulama in 2015, when istinbāṭ of madhhab manhajī was discussed once again, unveiled fierce debates between supporters of the two methods. The East Java Branch of Nahdlatul Ulama, which are fervent supporters of qawlī, insists on its sole employment in the fatwa. All their baḥth al-masā’il wāqi‘īyahs after the 2015 Congress use qawlī. However, manhajī start to appear in their baḥth al-masā’il mawḍū‘īyah, especially in cases where various approaches should be deployed, such as fatwa on Islam Nusantara.

Abstract

This article will show that the implementation of the Javanese Islamic tradition in the form of the ritual of the life cycle (life circle) is the implementation of the ideology of Shāfi‘ī developed by his followers (aṣḥāb). The ideology was then known as the ideology of aṣḥāb al-shāfi‘īyah. The ritual of life in the form of a birth ritual (metu), marriage (manten) and death (mati) has been mentioned in the classic Islamic book (kitab kuning). Allegations that Javanese Islam as syncretic Islam and the adoption of Hindu and Buddhist traditions are wrong. The ritual of the life circle as shown in this article is emerging from within Islam itself as an embodiment of the interpretation of Islamic doctrine. The researcher gets this conclusion after doing research of various classic Islamic books that explain the ritual of the life circle. To find out the conclusion, the researcher used the ideological criticism of Pierre F. Bourdieu. This article, therefore, rejects the views of outsiders such as Geertz, Beatty and Mulder, who explain that the ritual of Javanese Muslim is an impure doctrine of Islam.
