Abstract

This study explores how sacred Qur’anic manuscripts in Madura, Indonesia, are embedded in local mythological narratives and transformed into cultural and economic resources. Although these manuscripts are preserved as religious artifacts, they also function as “living texts” that circulate meaning and power within spiritual, cultural, and touristic contexts. The research aims to examine how local myths surrounding these manuscripts mediate between faith, authority, and contemporary cultural tourism. Using a qualitative approach that includes participant observation and semi-structured interviews with manuscript custodians, religious leaders, and visitors, the study analyzes how stories of miraculous origins—such as manuscripts written in one night or underwater—shape public perception and enhance symbolic value. The findings reveal that these narratives serve not only as expressions of belief but also as strategies of cultural preservation and commodification, turning sacred texts into heritage objects that attract visitors and generate community pride. The study contributes to a broader understanding of how religious heritage in Muslim societies is continually reinterpreted through narrative, economy, and local identity.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Mappano Bine tradition in Bone Regency as a communicative practice that integrates local wisdom, Islamic values, and ecological ethics. Drawing on a qualitative design with interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis, the research examines how environmental communication is enacted through ritual performances, symbolic expressions, and collective practices. The findings indicate that Mappano Bine extends beyond agricultural celebration; it serves as a communicative act that weaves Islamic spirituality prayer, gratitude, and communal responsibility into indigenous ritual forms. These practices generate ecological consciousness and transmit environmental ethics across generations through oral narratives, ritual symbols, and communal participation. The study advances the field of environmental communication by framing Mappano Bine as a hybrid communicative model where religious and indigenous values converge to promote ecological harmony and cultural continuity. While challenges such as modernization and youth disengagement persist, the contribution lies in positioning ritual as an analytical lens for understanding the intersection of faith, culture, and ecological communication.

Abstract

This study investigates the political dynamics of pesantren alumni from three influential pesantrens in East Java’s region: Pesantren Nurul Jadid Probolinggo, Pesantren Sidogiri Pasuruan, and Pesantren Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Situbondo, with fieldwork conducted in Bondowoso and Jember. Focusing on the 2024 presidential election, this research explores two key issues: the emergence of polarization among alumni groups and their adoption of political marketing strategies. Using a qualitative approach, the study finds that polarization intensified in line with divergent political preferences among the founding families of the parent pesantren. This division occurred not only across alumni networks of different pesantren origins but also within alumni of the same alma mater. The findings also show that each alumni group employed political marketing principles, combining push and pull strategies, to mobilize support and strengthen voter engagement for their preferred presidential candidate.

Abstract

This study examines the production of religious space in the Sunan Ampel area of Surabaya through a sociological-historical approach, emphasizing the concept of lived space and the dialectics between sacrality and economy. Departing from Henri Lefebvre’s theory of space production, this article argues that the sacredness of Ampel is not a static entity that is inherited ahistorically, but rather the result of social construction that continues to be produced and reproduced through ritual practices, social relations, economic activities, and collective memory that are formed historically. This research uses a qualitative method with in-depth interviews, field observations, and historical document analysis. The study’s findings show that, sociologically and historically, Ampel evolved from a religious settlement into an urban religious pilgrimage and tourism area with layers of symbolic, social, and economic meaning. The dialectic between sacredness and economics does not exist as a structural conflict of a binary nature, but rather as an everyday social experience negotiated by the actors. In the Sunan Ampel lived space, economic activities are tied to religious ethics and the moral economy, thereby supporting the sacred space’s sustainability. Abstract

This study focuses on the identity and ideological orientation of two Islamic political parties, as well as their steps towards ideological moderation and specific electoral strategies within the political landscapes of two different countries. This is a library-based research that explores the identity of political Islam ideology in secular democracies, utilizing a combination of historical and political approaches. The sources include literature and writings about political Islam groups in Indonesia and Turkey, specifically PKS and AKP, derived from reputable books and scholarly articles. The study concludes that both PKS and AKP are moderate in ideology and politics. PKS, especially in post-New Order, transformed through moderation and inclusion, maintaining its Islamist identity while forming coalitions with nationalist parties for survival. Meanwhile, AKP combines moderate Islamism with conservative democracy, though Erdogan’s dominant leadership tends toward authoritarianism.

Abstract

This study examines judicial considerations regarding wife’s maintenance in marital cases based on an analysis of decisions of the Religious Court of Pekanbaru during the period 2019-2024. The objective of this research is to identify patterns of judicial reasoning in granting or denying wife’s maintenance, including normative foundations, the application of the concept of nushūz, the use of ex officio authority, the determination of maintenance amounts, and attention to the execution of court decisions. The main argument of this study asserts that decisions on wife’s maintenance are not uniform, but are shaped by a combination of legal and factual factors that form specific patterns of judicial consideration. This research employs a normative legal method with a case approach and content analysis of selected court decisions. The findings indicate a shift in judicial practice toward more substantive protection of wives’ rights, as reflected in the increasing use of ex officio authority and references to judicial policies. Nevertheless, disparities remain in the proof of nushūz, variations in maintenance amounts, and limitations in the effectiveness of decision enforcement. This study argues that the quality of protection for wife’s maintenance largely depends on the consistency of judicial reasoning and the design of operative rulings oriented toward enforceability.

Abstract

The enactment of Law No. 16 of 2019, which raised the minimum marriage age to 19, has paradoxically contributed to a significant increase in marriage dispensation applications in Indonesia. This study examines the exercise of judicial discretion in marriage dispensation cases at the Bangkinang Religious Court and analyzes its socio-legal implications for children and their families. Employing a qualitative socio-legal approach, the research is based on document analysis of four court decisions in 2024 and in-depth interviews with judges, families, and community actors. The findings reveal that judicial discretion is not solely grounded in statutory norms but is substantially shaped by contextual considerations, including moral urgency, psychological readiness, economic capacity, and familial support. However, the frequent granting of dispensations raises critical concerns regarding the erosion of child protection principles and the potential normalization of underage marriage. The study argues for the establishment of clearer regulatory guidelines and a multidisciplinary assessment framework to ensure that judicial discretion aligns with the best interests of the child and broader social justice objectives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of livelihood practices in Muslim families in Pekanbaru City and explain the relationship between the norms of fiqh munakahat and social reality through a socio legal approach. The study used a qualitative method with data collection techniques including in depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results show that livelihood practices in Muslim families are dynamic and divided into three main patterns: normative, collaborative, and collective. Economic factors are the main determinant driving changes in livelihood practices, especially in the context of the pressures of life’s needs in urban areas. Meanwhile, educational and social factors play a role in shaping perspectives and relationship patterns within the family. These findings indicate that livelihood practices are the result of the interaction between fiqh norms and social reality. Conceptually, this study confirms that fiqh munakahat has an adaptive capacity to respond to social change through the principles of justice, benefit, and propriety. Therefore, variations in maintenance practices cannot be understood as deviations, but rather as a contextualization of sharia values in contemporary Muslim family life. This research contributes to the development of Islamic family law studies that are more contextual, empirical, and responsive to social dynamics.

Abstract

This article examines the legal contestation surrounding me’en batee, the Acehnese term for domino, within Aceh’s Sharia-based local legal order. While me’en batee is often practiced as social entertainment, it is also associated with gambling, wasted time, public disorder, and neglect of religious obligations. The issue has become more complex as domino is increasingly framed as an organized sport when played without betting. Using normative juridical research with socio-legal sensitivity, this article analyzes statutory materials, Aceh’s qanun, Islamic legal concepts, academic literature, and selected public discourses. It argues that the problem of me’en batee is not a complete legal vacuum, since gambling and maysir are already regulated under national law and Qanun Aceh No. 6 of 2014. The main issue is normative ambiguity: how to distinguish entertainment, sport, and prohibited gambling. The article proposes a proportional qanun-based regulatory model that is preventive and regulatory rather than merely punitive, aiming to protect Sharia-based public order while avoiding overcriminalization.
