Abstract

This study aimed at describing and explaining the experiential meaning, interpersonal meaning and textual meaning as well as the nature of schematic structure in the students? writings under study. This study used descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis as its technique. In collecting the data, some techniques were used such as content analysis, document analysis and also interviewing. This study involved 24 students of the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Kubu in the academic year 2013/2014. Thus, the object of this study was 24 students? expository writings analyzed through Systemic Functional Linguistics. From the result of the study, it was found out that the students expressed the experiential meaning by using six process types. Mostly, they used material process in their writings. The students expressed the interpersonal meaning of the text through the use of declarative, imperative, modality and personal pronoun. It was revealed that the expository texts under study were mostly constructed in declarative forms. The students expressed the textual meaning of their expository texts through developing themes and rhemes of the clauses constructing the texts. For that reason, the thematic development or progression was analyzed to recognize the textual meanings. Meanwhile, it was identified that twenty three expository writings were built in three main stages, while there is one text which was constructed in two stages or generic structures. The three stages cover introduction (thesis), main body (arguments) and conclusion (reiteration).keyword : Discourse Semantics, Expository Writing, Systemic Functional Linguistics.

Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian pengembangan dengan menggunakan model Sugiyono. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi masalah dan kebutuhan RPP yang digunakan di SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja.mendesain dan mengembangkan RPP berbasis karakter serta mengukur efekivitas dan kualitas dari RPP yang dikembangkan di SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif dan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan RPP yang digunakan di SMK Triatma Jaya belum mencantumkan nilai karakter bangsa baik di kegiatan pembelajaran maupun pada penilaian RPP. Kegiatan pembelajaran cenderung monoton dan terjadi pengulangan materi. RPP yang dibuat berdasarkan Juknis Pengembangan RPP SMA yang disusun oleh Direktorat Pengembangan SMA dengan menambahkan penilaian karakter bangsa. RPP berbasis karakter dikembangkan dalam bentuk RPP yang terintegrasi. Hasil uji coba menunjukkan RPP yang dikembangkan efektif dan memiliki kualitas yang baik. Kata Kunci : rencana pelaksanaan pembelajaran, nilai-nilai karakter bangsa This study was a Research and Development study (R&D) used Sugiyono?s model which aimed at identifying problem and the needs of the lesson plans in SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja, determining the suitable design and developing character based lesson plan in SMK Triatma Jaya, measuring the effectiveness and the quality of the lesson plan developed. The data of the present study were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. This result showed that the existing lesson plans did not clearly state the values of nation character and the assessment and it was not explicitly stated on the learning activity. The learning activity seemed monotone. There seemed to be materials repetition. The materials must be suitable with the students? department. The lesson plans developed were designed based on technical guideline of lesson plan development proposed by Board Directors of Senior High School Development (2010) with character assessment as an addition. The lesson plans were developed in form of integrated lesson plan. The lesson plans developed were effective and the quality is excellent.keyword : lesson plan, the values of nation character

Abstract

Studi eksperimen ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi pengaruh pembelajaran berbasis masalah dan asesmen kinerja terhadap kompetensi membaca dan menulis siswa kelas sepuluh SMAN 1 Mengwi pada tahun ajaran 2011/2012. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan 2x2 faktorial. 96 siswa dilibatkan sebagai sampel penelitian. Mereka dipilih dengan teknik sampling acak. Data kompetensi membaca dan menulis dikumpulkan melalui tes essay. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan Analysis Varian Multivariat (MANAVA) Temuan penelitian ini adalah 1) pembelajaran berbasis masalah berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap kompetensi membaca dan menulis siswa yang terjadi secara simultan dan terpisah, 2) asesmen kinerja berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap kompetensi membaca dan menulis siswa yang terjadi secara simultan dan terpisah, 3) terdapat interaksi signifikan antara model pembelajaran dan tipe asesmen terhadap kompetensi membaca dan menulis yang terjadi simultan dan terpisah, 4) tidak terdapat interaksi signifikan antara model pembelajaran dan tipe asesmen terhadapak kompetensi membaca siswa, 5) terdapat interaksi signifikan antara model pembelajaran dan tipe asesmen terhadapak kompetensi menulis siswa.Kata Kunci : pembelajaran berbasis masalah, asesmen kinerja, kompetensi membaca, kompetensi menulis This experimental study aimed at investigating the effect of Problem Based Learning and Performance Assessment on reading and writing competencies of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Mengwi in the academic year 2011/2012. This research applied 2x2 factorial design. 96 students were selected as sample through random sampling. Data of students? reading and writing competencies were collected by using essay tests. The students? answers were scored by using analytical scoring rubric. The acquired data were analyzed statistically by Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) at 5% significance level. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 2 Sukawati. Penelitian ini meliputi jenis dari strategi komunikasi, alasan dari penggunaan strategi komunikasi dan persepsi siswa terhadap strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh guru. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah guru bahasa Inggris di SMP N 2 Sukawati di kelas tujuh dan delapan. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan beberapa instrument, seperti lembar observasi, kuesioner dan pedoman wawancara. Jenis dari strategi komunikasi didapatkan melalui mengobservasi dan merekam guru dalam proses belajar mengajar, sedangkan kuesioner digunakan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh guru. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 14 jenis dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh guru. Strategi perubahan kode adalah yang paling sering digunakan oleh guru. Strategi tersebut muncul sebanyak 35 kali di dalam proses belajar mengajar. Alasan dari guru menggunakan strategi tersebut adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa selama proses belajar mengajar berlangsung dan membuat siswa mengerti mengenai materi. Data juga menunjukkan bahwa guru mendapatkan persepsi yang positif dari siswanya dalam menggunakan strategi komunikasi selama proses belajar mengajar. Kata Kunci : Strategi Komunikasi, guru bahasa Inggris, dan proses belajar mengajar. This study aimed at describing Communication Strategies used by Junior High School English teachers in SMP N 2 Sukawati. It includes kinds of Communication Strategies, the reasons of the use of Communication Strategies and the students? perception toward Communication Strategies used by the teachers. The subjects of this study were Junior High School English teachers of the seventh and eighth grades of SMP Negeri 2 Sukawati. The data were collected by using some instruments namely observation sheet, questionnaire and interview guide. The kinds of Communication Strategies were gathered by observing and recording the teacher during teaching and learning process, while the questionnaire was used to investigate the students? perception toward the Communication Strategies used by the teachers. The results of this study showed that there were 14 kinds of Communication Strategies used by the teachers. Code switching strategy was the most frequently used by the teachers. It occurred for 35 times in teaching and learning process. The reasons of the teachers used those strategies were to improve the students? speaking abilities during teaching and learning process, and made them understood the material. The data also showed that the teachers got positive perception from their students in applying Communication Strategies during teaching and learning process. keyword : Communication Strategies, English teacher, teaching and learning process

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: (1) bagaimana implementasi PBL di dalam pengajaran menulis essay, (2) bagaimana respon mahasiswa terhadap aplikasi PBP pada pembelajaran menulis essay, dan (3) sejauh mana efektifitas dari pembelajaran berbasis projek dalam meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis essay. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskripsif yang menggunakan desain Sequential Exploratory dari penggabungan metode kwantitatif dan kwalitatif (mixed method) oleh Clark & Creswell, 2008:178-180. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah 20 mahasiswa jurusan pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Fokus dari penelitian ini adalah aplikasi PBP dalam pengajaran menulis essay. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan recana pembelajaran, test menulis, rubrik penilaian, catatan lapangan, dan kemudian dianalisa menggunakan Paired Sample t-Test dan interpretasi kualitatif data. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) Aplikasi PBP di kelas mendukung proses pembelajaran menulis, (2) Pembelajaran Berbasis Projek mampu meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam 5 aspek menulis yaitu; ?main idea?, ?on topic?, ?details?, ?parts of essay?, and ?word choice?, dan (3) Mahasiswa memberikan respon yang positif terhadap penggunaan PBP di kelas menulis, setelah mengaplikasikan beberapa modifikasi. Hasil penelitian ini memiliki kontribusi penting untuk pendidikan Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing secara umum dan pembelajaran berbasis projek secara khusus.Kata Kunci : Kemampuan Menulis, Pembelajaran Berbasis Projek, Respon Mahasiswa This study aimed at investigating: (1) how is the implementation of Project-Based Learning in essay writing classroom, (2) how do students respond to the application of PBL in teaching essay writing, and (3) to what extent is the effectiveness of PBL approach in improving students? essay writing skill. This study is a descriptive study which is employed Sequential Exploratory Design of mixed method by Clark & Creswell, 2008:178-180. The subjects of this study were 20 adult learners in English Education Department of Mahasaraswati University Denpasar in academic year 2013/2014. The focus of this research is the application of PBL in teaching essay writing. The data were collected by the means of lesson plan, writing test, scoring rubrics, and field notes which were analyzed using Paired Sample t-Test and qualitative data interpretation. The results indicated that: (1) The implementation of PBL supports the instructional process of essay writing, (2) PBL is effective in improving students? ability in 5 domains of writing, those are; ?main idea?, ?on topic?, ?details?, ?parts of essay?, and ?word choice?, and (3) Students gave positive responses toward the application of PBL after several modifications of implementations. Asril Marjohan, M.A This study attempted to describe and explain (a) the cohesion of English narrative writings produced by the students under study; (b) the coherence of English narrative writings produced by the students under study; (c) the problems encountered by the students under study in creating cohesion and coherence in their English narrative writing. This study was designed as qualitative study. This study was conducted on 30 students of the ninth grade in SMP Negeri 2 Banjar. The data were collected through students? narrative writings, students? questionnaire and teachers? interview. The data were analyzed by using the theory introduced by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The analysis was concerned with grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction), lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation) and aspect of coherence that were found in the students? writings. The results of this study show that (a) the students were able to use the five types of cohesive devices to make their writing coherent. The first cohesive devices used were reference (70.77%) with personal reference as the dominant use. Then, it was followed by conjunction (28.51%), substitution (0.57%), ellipsis (0.14%). Lexical cohesion was used 137 item dominated with repetition (78%). (b) The students? produced coherence of the narratives through the development of themes, and the generic structure. (c) Some problems of coherence identified were the problems with reference (personal, demonstrative), conjunction (additive, adversative, causal, temporal) and limited choice of lexical item. Asril Marjohan, M.A Penelitian ini bermaksud mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan (a) penanda kohesi tulisan narasi siswa; (b) koherensi tulisan narasi siswa; (c) masalah kohesi dan koherensi dalam tulisan narasi siswa. Bentuk penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada 30 siswa kelas Sembilan SMP Negeri 2 Banjar. Data diperoleh melalui tulisan narasi siswa, kuesioner siswa dan wawancara guru. Data yang diperoleh dianalis berdasarkan teori Halliday and Hasan (1976). Analisis fokus pada kohesi gramatikal (referensi, substitusi, ellipsis, konjungsi), kohesi leksikal (pengulangan dan kolokasi) dan aspek koherensi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan (a) Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (a) siswa pada dasarnya mampu menggunakan lima piranti kohesif untuk membuat tulisan mereka menjadi koherensi. Penanda kohesi yang dimaksud adalah referensi (70,77%) yang didominasi dengan penggunaan referensi personal. Kemudian, diikuti oleh konjungsi (28.51%,) substitusi (0,57%), ellipsis (0,14%). Penggunaan kohesi leksikal 137 butir yang didominasi dengan pengulangan (78%). (b) Koherensi teks narasi diciptakan dengan pengembangan ide utama dari teks itu yang didukung oleh ide setiap paragraf, penggunaan generic structure dari teks narasi. Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the effect of RAFT strategy and anxiety upon writing competency. It was an experimental research with 2x2 factorial design. The result showed that (a) there was significant difference in writing competency between the students taught by RAFT strategy and those taught by conventional strategy,b) there was an interactional effect between the implementation of RAFT strategy and the students? anxiety, (c) there was significant different in the writing competency between the students? with high anxiety, taught by RAFT strategy and those who are taught by conventional technique, (d) there was significant different in the writing competency between the students? with low anxiety, taught by implementing RAFT strategy and those who are taught by conventional strategykeyword : anxiety, RAFT strategy, writing competency.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan instrumen self assessment untuk meningkatkan kompetensi menulis siswa sekolah menengah pertama kelas 8 di Denpasar . Penelitian dan Pengembangan digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Analisis kebutuhan dilakukan di tiga sekolah yang berbeda di Denpasar untuk mendapatkan kebutuhan yang diperlukan oleh guru. Terdapat dua metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu kuesioner dan wawancara . Hasil wawancara dan kuesioner kemudian dianalisis untuk mengetahui jenis self-assessment yang dibutuhkan . Berdasarkan analisis kebutuhan , ditemukan bahwa guru memerlukan self -assessment yang berfokus pada pengembangan siswa . Hasil analisis kebutuhan kemudian digunakan sebagai data untuk mengembangkan instrumen. Penelitian ini menggunakan model ADDIE dalam mengembangkan instrumen yang merupakan pendekatan sistematis untuk proses desain pembelajaran terdiri dari langkah-langkah model meliputi Analisis , Desain , Pengembangan , Implementasi , dan Evaluasi . Selanjutnya, untuk mengetahui kualitas instrumen, self-assessment prototipe dinilai oleh expert judges dan guru . Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa kualitas instrumen yang dikembangkan adalah baik berdasarkan hasil jugdments ahli dan guru . Dengan demikian, alat penilaian berbentuk self-assessment direkomendasikan untuk digunakan karena akan memberikan kontribusi yang berarti bagi pengembangan keterampilan menulis di sekolah-sekolah SMP di Denpasar .Kata Kunci : kompetensi menulis, penilaian diri, This study aimed at developing self-assessment instrument to improve the writing competency of grade 8 junior high schools students in Denpasar. Research and Development was employed for this study. The need analysis was conducted in three different schools in Denpasar resulting the needs required by the teachers. There were two methods used in this study namely questionnaire and interview. The result of the interview and the questionnaire were analyzed in order to know the kind of self assessment needed. Based on the need analysis, it was found that the teachers needed self assessment which focuses on the development of students. The result of the need analysis then used as a data to develop the instrument. This study used ADDIE model in developing the instrument which is a systematic approach to the instructional design process consist of for the steps of the model includes Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Furthermore, in order to find out the quality of developed self- assessment instrument the prototype were measured by judges and teachers. The finding shows that the quality of the developed instrument was good based on the result of the expert judgments and user judgement. Thus, the self assessment instrument is recommended to be used as it will result a meaningful contribution to the development of writing skills in junior high schools in Denpasar.keyword : self-assessment, writing competency

Abstract

Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan instrumen penilaian diri untuk kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas VIII SMP. Secara spesifik focus penelitian ini; 1) mengetahui instrumen penilaian diri yang ingin dikembangkan; 2) mengembangkan prototipe instrumen penilaian diri; dan 3) menguji kualitas instrumen penilaian diri yang dikembangkan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode R&D model Gall, Gall & Borg (2003). Subyek penelitian ini adalah 11 guru bahasa Inggris dan silabus untuk siswa kelas delapan SMP. Data diperoleh dengan menggunakan kuesioner, wawancara, observasi, dan silabus analisis. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ada dua bentuk instrumen penilaian diri yang perlu dikembangkan, yaitu aspek bahasa dan aspek non bahasa. Prototipe instrumen penilaian diri dikembangkan dengan mempertimbangkan analisis kebutuhan dan grand teori. Instrumen penilaian diri divalidasi dan direvisi oleh dua expert judges dan user judges. Berdasarkan validasi dari expert dan user judges, kualitas instrumen penilaian diri yang dikembangkan dikategorikan sebagai instrumen yang sangat baik dengan validasi yang sangat tinggi.Kata Kunci : instrumen evaluasi diri, kompetensi berbicara The main purpose of this study was to develop self assessment instruments for speaking competency of the eighth grade students of junior high school. The focus of this study was specifically on; 1) finding out the types of self-assessment needed to be developed; 2) developing the prototype of self assessment instruments; and 3) examining the quality of the developed self-assessment instruments. This study used R&D method of Gall, Gall & Borg (2003) design model. The subjects of this study were eleven English teachers and syllabus for the eighth grade students of junior high school. The data were obtained through questionnaire, interview, observation and syllabus analysis. The results revealed that there were two form of self-assessment instruments needed to be developed, namely linguistic aspect and non-linguistic aspect self assessment. The prototype of self assessment instruments were developed by considering the need analysis results and grand theory. The instruments were validated and revised by two expert judges and user judges. Based on the validation from expert judges and user judges, the quality of the developed self assessment instruments was categorized as excellent instruments with very high validity.keyword : self assessment instruments, speaking competency
