Abstract

This article was made based on an observation on the application of a Local Culture-Based Project in Balinese Language and Religious Literature Study Program of Denpasar State Hindu Dharma Institute. The basic reason for the application of this Project-Based Learning method is that, students were less motivated in following the EFL course. Students found that English would give a very minimum support for Balinese language and culture. English as a foreign language seems to be a threat for Balinese language sustainability. Therefore, the writer would show the students their actual connection in which English as a world dominant language could empower the existence of local culture including the language itself. (Regmi, 2013) stated that people should consider that the present existed local language that is used to pass the local context and culture on from generation to generation will die. Therefore, its integration to English as a world dominant language is one of the effective ways to preserve the local culture. Writer then designed project task which deal with local Balinese Culture. Students were asked to make a „Multilingual Pictured Folklore Book‟ during EFL course. Methodological triangulation (e.g. survey, interview and observation) were applied to confirm the students‟ respond toward the application of the Project. The result shows that PBL approach implemented in the present study was proven effective in improving the students‟ interest in learning English. Besides, the students gave a positive response toward the application of the Project.

Abstract

Metacognitive learning strategies (MLS) have been proven to promote problem solving skills and enable students to achieve better in learning (Aurah, 2013; Magogwe, 2013). Researches on MLS have also been done to investigate its effect on students’ performance in various ELT skills, e.g. listening, reading, speaking and writing. Most of the researchers found that MLS plays a significant role in students’ learning those four skills. However, there is still lack of studies done in academic writing especially within the Indonesian EFL setting. Besides, a research which is done by controlling various variables, e.g. English proficiency, students’ self-efficacy (self-regulatory factors), modes of writing (paper-based & internet based), etc. is required to give a clearer picture about the role of MLS in EFL academic writing. Keywords: metacognitive learning strategies, academic writing

Abstract

The vast development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)improves the integration of technology for the academic purpose. This phenomenon thenraises an issue of technology acceptance, which becomes an interesting field of investigationfor many scholars. In this respect, Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has proven to be arobust, powerful, and parsimonious framework for predicting user acceptance oftechnology integration in various fields (Lai, 2017; Rondan-Cataluna et al., 2015). Althoughthere is a lot of research studies reported the use of TAM and its developed versions ininvestigating the technology acceptance in the educational field, there is no publication thattrying to map current studies which focus on educational technology acceptance researchespecially in ELT. Based on the needs of providing such information, this article wouldpresent the state of the art of the current research trends on the application of TAMframework in investigating ICT integration acceptance in ELT. The main part of this articlewould describe the evolution of TAM framework, followed by the discussion of recentresearch results concerning the technology acceptance, and the future trends of technologyacceptance research in ELT. This state of the art article is expected to inspire other researchersto conduct further studies on technology acceptance in ELT and also suggest the ELTpractitioners about the current and future trends in technology integration for academicpurpose.

Abstract

AbstractEnglish is not a compulsory subject in early childhood education (ECD) curriculum in Indonesia. However, practically, many ECD schools implement English language learning which adds value to the existence of the ECD School itself, in addition to the demand of parents. Therefore, many problems arise in the ELT practice in ECD schools, one of which is the problem of the appropriateness of approaches and methods of ELT applied to the young learner. This article aims to promote the English learning approaches in teaching English for young learner (TEYL) that have been presented by Professor Jack C. Richard in his official web page, complemented by methods that can be implemented by ECD school Teachers. Several related studies on the effectiveness of the method are also presented to provide empirical evidence from various contexts. Finally, conclusions and suggestions about TEYL approaches and methods are addressed to readers, especially for ECD practitioners and researchers interested in TEYL.Keywords: Approach, Method, English Languge Teaching, Early Childhood.AbstrakBahasa Inggris merupakan mata pelajaran yang tidak diwajibkan dalam kurikulum PAUD di Indonesia. Abstract

One of the important components which determine the quality of education is the quality of instructional process. A qualified instructional process is characterized by the involvement of all instructional aspects, namely; human resources, material, media, and also the environment where the instructional process takes place, (Mukhid, 2007). All of those instructional aspects need to be accommodated by an appropriate method in order to make them effective. An instructional method that is proved effective in improving the instructional process is Project-Based Learning (PBL). This method of teaching and learning would facilitate the students with the instructional process that accommodate the students? creativity and potentials. PBL provides authentic challenges and choices of processes in accomplishing the task. The teacher guides the students as a facilitator while the students do the project using their individual initiative. Moreover, individual initiative which is different in every student then empowers the team work to get the expected goal (Liegel, 2004). Finally, the instructional syllabus should first be constructed to implement PBL effectively that could accommodate all of its advantages. This article would elaborates the application of EFL syllabus that is made based on PBL method. The syllabus was applied in Applied English Class of Religious Education Department, IHDN Denpasar. The findings highlight both benefits and shortcomings of this type of syllabus and also emphasize the importance of Project-Based Syllabus in improving the quality of instructional process.
