Abstract

Abstract   This study aimed at (1) describing how English teachers at Middle Years of Sekolah Buin Batu (SBB) develop curriculum; (2) describing how English teachers at Middle Years of SBB determine learning resources;(3) describing how English teachers at Middle Years of SBB deliver learning activities, and; (4) describing how English teachers at Middle Years assess students? learning progress. The subjects of the study were the English teachers and students at Middle Years of SBB in the academic year 2011/2012. The data were collected using some methods of data collection namely interview, observation, and documentation. Interview and documentation were used to collect data of curriculum and learning resources while interview, observation, and documentation were used to collect data of learning activities and assessment. The result of the study indicated that (1) English teachers at Middle Years of SBB develop curriculum. The teachers develop curriculum based on curriculum development procedure which covers the stages in team development and common understanding of curriculum development at SBB including inventory making, need analysis, drafting, verification, validation, finishing, approval, filing and archiving; (2) English teachers at Middle Years of SBB use various types of resources and identify teaching learning resources based on teachers? planning to achieve teaching learning objectives, propose to school leaders, request the resources through administration staff, purchase the resources after the Purchase Order (PO) is approved by Finance and Admin Manager; (3) English teachers at Middle years of SBB teach English based on Year level and use various types of methods recognizing every individual abilities and learning styles (4) English teachers at Middle Years of SBB employ various kinds of assessment techniques based on the school assessment policy and the learning objectives   Keywords: ELT, Curriculum Development, Learning Resources, Learning Activities, Learning Assessment

Abstract

This study was focused at finding out 1) the speech acts used, 2) the styles of politeness used, and 3) the speaking errors made by the students in handling ticket reservation. It was a qualitative research, and the subjects of the study were the eleventh grade students of UPW in SMKN 5 in academic year 2013/2014. The research data were collected through simulated speech. The speech acts that were used the most by the students were expressive. There were 37% expressive, followed by Assertive 34%, directive 18%, and commisive 11%. The politeness styles showed that 91% speech acts were categorized as polite and there were 9% speech acts categorized as impolite. The maxims that the students used were tact, generosity, approbation, and modesty. The students made some errors in speaking, grammar 25%, content 21%, pronunciation 20% and diction 6%. It can be concluded that the speech acts, politeness, and speaking skills have a significant rule to help the students to be able to communicate well. English teachers should teach the students more expressions to express actions and also let the students know about politeness so that they can be good and polite in communication.keyword : Speech acts, politeness, speaking errors

Abstract

Abstract This study focused oninvestigatingthe main effect of MCSR on second semester students? reading competency and the differential affect of MCSR between the students with good vocabulary mastery and with poor vocabulary mastery on students? reading competencyin EESP of Unmas Denpasar.The findings show thatthe students taught usingMCSRachieved better reading competency than those who were taught usingconventional teaching. Furthermore, there is an interactional effect between teaching strategies and vocabulary masteryon students? reading competency.The students with good vocabulary masteryimproved their reading competency when beingtaughtusingMCSR than usingconventional teaching.On the other hand, there is no difference in reading competency between the students who havepoor vocabulary mastery taughtwithMCSR and withconventional study.It can be concluded that this study provides an empirical evidence of the importance of the teaching strategy considering vocabulary mastery in English reading instructions. Abstract

This study aimed at describing and explaining the experiential meaning, interpersonal meaning and textual meaning as well as the nature of schematic structure in the students? writings under study. This study used descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis as its technique. In collecting the data, some techniques were used such as content analysis, document analysis and also interviewing. This study involved 24 students of the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Kubu in the academic year 2013/2014. Thus, the object of this study was 24 students? expository writings analyzed through Systemic Functional Linguistics. From the result of the study, it was found out that the students expressed the experiential meaning by using six process types. Mostly, they used material process in their writings. The students expressed the interpersonal meaning of the text through the use of declarative, imperative, modality and personal pronoun. It was revealed that the expository texts under study were mostly constructed in declarative forms. The students expressed the textual meaning of their expository texts through developing themes and rhemes of the clauses constructing the texts. For that reason, the thematic development or progression was analyzed to recognize the textual meanings. Meanwhile, it was identified that twenty three expository writings were built in three main stages, while there is one text which was constructed in two stages or generic structures. The three stages cover introduction (thesis), main body (arguments) and conclusion (reiteration).keyword : Discourse Semantics, Expository Writing, Systemic Functional Linguistics.

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effect of performance assessment and grammar mastery upon the students? writing ability. The research method used in this research was experimental. The population was 6 classes consisted of 180 students of the fourth semester students of the English Education Study Program of FKIP UNMAS Denpasar in the academic year 2012/2013. The sample of this study was 60 students which was divided into 2 groups, namely experimental and control group, by Cluster Random Sampling Technique. The research instruments used to obtain the data in this research were in form of tests which were analyzed using Statistical Two-Way ANOVA and Tukey Test. The research findings are first, there is a significant effect of performance assessment on the writing ability of the fourth semester students of the English Study Program of FKIP Unmas Denpasar in the academic year 2012/2013. Second, there is a significant effect of grammar mastery on the writing ability of the fourth semester students of the English Study Program of FKIP Unmas Denpasar in the academic year 2012/2013. Third, there is a significant effect of performance assessment and grammar mastery on the writing ability of the fourth semester students of the English Study Program of FKIP Unmas Denpasar in the academic year 2012/2013. Fourth, there is a significant effect between the students who have high grammar mastery assessed using performance assessment and assessed using conventional technique. Fifth, there is no significant effect between the students who have low grammar mastery assessed using performance assessment and assessed using conventional assessment technique.   Keywords: Performance assessment, grammar mastery, writing ability.

Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian pengembangan dengan menggunakan model Sugiyono. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi masalah dan kebutuhan RPP yang digunakan di SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja.mendesain dan mengembangkan RPP berbasis karakter serta mengukur efekivitas dan kualitas dari RPP yang dikembangkan di SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif dan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan RPP yang digunakan di SMK Triatma Jaya belum mencantumkan nilai karakter bangsa baik di kegiatan pembelajaran maupun pada penilaian RPP. Kegiatan pembelajaran cenderung monoton dan terjadi pengulangan materi. RPP yang dibuat berdasarkan Juknis Pengembangan RPP SMA yang disusun oleh Direktorat Pengembangan SMA dengan menambahkan penilaian karakter bangsa. RPP berbasis karakter dikembangkan dalam bentuk RPP yang terintegrasi. Hasil uji coba menunjukkan RPP yang dikembangkan efektif dan memiliki kualitas yang baik. Kata Kunci : rencana pelaksanaan pembelajaran, nilai-nilai karakter bangsa This study was a Research and Development study (R&D) used Sugiyono?s model which aimed at identifying problem and the needs of the lesson plans in SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja, determining the suitable design and developing character based lesson plan in SMK Triatma Jaya, measuring the effectiveness and the quality of the lesson plan developed. The data of the present study were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. This result showed that the existing lesson plans did not clearly state the values of nation character and the assessment and it was not explicitly stated on the learning activity. The learning activity seemed monotone. There seemed to be materials repetition. The materials must be suitable with the students? department. The lesson plans developed were designed based on technical guideline of lesson plan development proposed by Board Directors of Senior High School Development (2010) with character assessment as an addition. The lesson plans were developed in form of integrated lesson plan. The lesson plans developed were effective and the quality is excellent.keyword : lesson plan, the values of nation character

Abstract

Abstract The present study aims at analyzing the authenticity of teacher made assessment in State Senior High Schools in Buleleng Regency in terms of assessment planning, assessment implementation as perceived by teachers and students and the students? English achievement. It also investigates assessment contribution to students? English achievement. The mixed method design research took 32 English teachers and 32 classes of students as the sample. The data were gained by collecting assessment documents, administering questionnaires and interview. The study found that the assessment have high authenticity level of planning, high authenticity level of implementation as perceived by teachers and high authenticity level of level implementation as perceived by students. The students? achievement after being assessed by using their teacher made assessment is considered high. The study also confirmed that there is a significant contribution of the authenticity of teacher made assessment to students? English achievement. More specifically, assessment implementation as perceived by students gives the highest contribution. Keywords: authenticity, teacher made assessment, English achievement

Abstract

ABSTRACT This experimental study aims at investigating the effect of Project Based Learning (PBL) and students? perceived learning discipline on students? writing competency of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Mataram. PBL is a teaching method which underlies on project given to the students. Besides teaching method, learning discipline is taken into account because it is predicted can affect the students? achievement in learning foreign language. This research involved three type variables, namely: teaching method as independent variable, learning discipline as moderator variable, and students? writing competency as dependent variable. To conduct this research, 80 students were selected as the sample. The design of this research was 2x2 factorial design. Data were collected by an instrument called posttest which is essay type test. The acquired data were analyzed statistically by two way ANOVA. This research discovers: 1) there is a significant effect of PBL on students? writing competency, 2) there is no significant effect of the interaction between teaching methods (PBL and conventional teaching method) and students? learning discipline level (high and low levels) on students? writing competency, 3) PBL has significant effect for both high and low discipline students. Based on the analysis, PBL has positive effect on students? writing competency. So, it is recommended to apply this teaching method in writing class as an alternative way to improve students? writing competency.Key words: project based learning, learning discipline, writing competency

Abstract

This study aimed at (i) developing authentic reading material for the tenth year students of Vocational high school based on the School Based Curriculum that meet the criteria of a good reading material, (ii) identifying the reading materials which have been used in SMK negeri 1 Kubutambahan, (iii) identifying the types of reading material which are needed to be developed fro the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan, (iv) identifying the reading topics which were needed to be developed for the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan, (v) developing reading activities that could be included and needed to be developed for the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan.  The data were gained using research instruments such as questionnaires, rubrics, and interview guides in order to find the compatibility of the existing materials and the developed materials with the syllabus and the criteria of good materials. Gall and Gall design model was employed as the present research procedures. The obtained data were quantitatively analyzed by using percentage of frequency. From the results, new materials were developed based on the requirements of syllabus analysis, criteria of good materials and good reading materials. After being developed, the materials were evaluated by experts. The results of the analysis were used as guideline for revising the developed materials. After being revised, the new materials were field-tested in the tenth year grade of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan after conducting pre-test in order to identify the students? prior knowledge. After field-test, post-test was conducted to identify whether or not the developed materials could improve the students? reading comprehension. The next step was revising the results of the field test. After field-testing, the rubrics for analyzing the quality of developed materials were distributed to the teacher and the students. The obtained data were analyzed and categorized to ascertain rating scales. In conclusion, it was found that (i) the reading materials were developed based on the criteria of good materials, and the school-based curriculum and BSNP for the tenth year students of Vocational High School and considered as good reading materials, based on the criteria proposed by Tomlinson (1998, (ii) the existing materials in the English book used did not fully meet the requirements of the syllabus and curriculum, and categorized as average materials, (iii) authentic reading materials were the type of materials needed to be developed for the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan, (iv) the reading topics which were needed to be developed were based on the SBC syllabus, (v) the reading activities that can be included and needed to be developed for the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan were reading activities which based on the criteria proposed by Tomlinson (1998) and SBC. Abstract

  Abstract   This qualitative study focused on analyzing the teacher?s beliefs and pedagogical practices in EFL employed by the teachers at Madrasah Tsanawiyah at Sakra Barat. The subjects of this research were all of the English teachers of Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Sakra Barat. The data were collected through questionaire, interview, observation and document study. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman (1984), interactive model. It was found that teachers of Madrasah Tsanawiyah at Sakra Barat, in teaching learning process had certain kinds of beliefs with regard to the teaching and learning process, namely, (1) Teaching grammar is important in EFL, (2) Drilling is effective (3) Language as medium of instruction, (4) Cooperative learning, (5) contextual materials in teaching, (6) communicative activities. Teachers? beliefs influence their pedagogical practices in teaching and learning process in the classroom reflected their beliefs.   Keywords: Beliefs, EFL, and Pedagogical Practices.
