Abstract

This study analyzes comics as a visual art medium that communicates meaning through the interaction between images and text. The specific form of this interaction can be seen in the use of onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia in comics uses pictures as representations of sensory experiences to overcome the limitations of word use. Through pictures, onomatopoeia not only means the imitation of sounds, but also creates impressions, such as emotions or attitudes. This study aims to interpret the meaning of onomatopoeia accompanied by images in the comic Yowis Ben: Lika-liku Anak Band (YBLAB) karya Bayu Skak. The research used a descriptive qualitative method with the onomatopoeic categorization theory of Thomas & Clara (2004), and the onomatopoeic continuum theory of Sasamoto (2019). According to Thomas & Clara’s (2004) framework, the findings of this research show that there is one imitation word for animal sounds (Call of Animals), two imitation words for natural sounds (Sounds of Nature), four imitation words for human sounds (Sounds by Human), and six imitation words for various sounds (Miscellaneous Sounds). In addition, based on the continuum theory from Sasamoto (2019), it was found that, images in comics make the word onomatopoeia, which is an imitation of sound, experience a narrowing of meaning by making it more specific through the appearance of the meaning of impressions, the meaning of feelings, the details of events or events, and the intensity of events.

Abstract

The art of drumblek is a percussion music phenomenon typical of Salatiga, Central Java, which was born from local creativity by using musical instruments from used items such as barrels, blek, buckets, and bamboo. This research aims to explore the form, socio-cultural function, and development of drumblek as a performing art. The research method is qualitative with an ethnographic approach, involving field observation and in-depth interviews with the actors and drumblek preservationists. The results show that drumblek has undergone a transformation of the form of performance: from a simple appearance in the style of a traditional drumband to a dynamic carnival performance, complete with costume innovations and variations of instruments. This art continues to maintain the values of togetherness, creativity, and the spirit of mutual cooperation in its community. As a collective entertainment vehicle, drumblek also functions as a medium to strengthen Salatiga’s local cultural identity. Drumblek has become a symbol of pride of the Salatiga community. Thus, drumblek makes an important contribution as an innovative performing art while strengthening the cultural identity of the Salatiga community.

Abstract

This study aims to formulate knowledge regarding the creative processes in sustainable design through Practice-Led and Practice-Based Research approaches, using styrofoam waste utilization as a case study. As a non-biodegradable solid waste, the volume of styrofoam continues to escalate due to its extensive use in the industrial and household packaging sectors. This research explores the potential of such waste as a primary material for three-dimensional wall decorations that integrate sustainability principles. Through an exploratory method, the study encompasses stages of form development, surface design treatment using cement coating, and the application of spray-painting techniques to create dynamic visual effects. Experimental results demonstrate that styrofoam waste can be transformed into aesthetic elements characterized by structural integrity and artistic surface values. Beyond expanding the horizons of art and design practice, this research offers a tangible contribution to mitigating plastic-based waste that adversely affects the environment and health. Both theoretically and practically, this study generates novelty in material development, techniques, and waste-based design structures that support the advancement of Sustainable Design within the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) framework applicable to urban societies.

Abstract

This study examines the mechanisms of traditional music transmission at Sanggar Jiwa Etnik Blambangan in Banyuwangi, a rapidly growing sanggar (studio) where most members are young learners. The research focuses on the learning process, supporting factors, and documentation strategies that can be replicated as a teaching model for curriculum development in arts institutions. Specifically, this study supports plans to establish an arts campus in Banyuwangi. The research employs a participatory ethnographic approach, structured interviews, and creative organizational analysis to explore pedagogical interactions, sanggar structure, and innovations in musical practice. The theoretical framework integrates Lave & Wenger’s community of practice, Florida’s creative organization concepts, and an ethnomusicological approach to analyze musical structures and their social contexts. Findings reveal that Sanggar Jiwa Etnik Blambangan employs effective methods to simplify complex musical patterns, incorporates cultural context in each learning session, and makes traditional music more engaging and accessible to younger generations. This process not only enhances the accessibility of traditional music education but also fosters greater interest and active participation among sanggar members. These findings reinforce the potential of the sanggar’s learning model as a reference for arts curriculum development, particularly in the context of establishing an arts campus in Banyuwangi.

Abstract

Session musicians occupy a unique position as mobile and flexible professionals who must be able to adapt to diverse musical situations while facing unstable economic and social pressures. The transition from formal education to an industry that demands multidimensional competencies often becomes a highly challenging phase, where the artistic idealism of graduates meets a competitive and unpredictable reality. This study aims to understand the transition of graduates from the Vocational Program in Music Performance toward a career as session musicians in Jakarta’s music industry. The main focus of this research is to reveal the challenges faced by the graduates and the adaptive strategies they develop to sustain their careers. This research employs a qualitative case study approach within the framework of grounded theory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and both participatory and non-participatory observations involving fourteen informants, consisting of music college graduates, community musicians, producers, and music directors. Data analysis was conducted through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding to identify thematic categories. The results show that formal education provides a technical foundation but does not fully prepare graduates to face the fluid and uncertain realities of the industry. Conversely, adaptive strategies such as cross-genre musical flexibility, non- formal learning through mentoring and observation, personal branding, reputation management, networking, and technological adaptation emerge as key competencies determining career success. These findings affirm that the resilience of session musicians is shaped not only by technical skills but also by social, symbolic, and cultural capital developed beyond formal education. Theoretically, this study expands the discussion on musicians’ professional identity and the precarity of creative labor in Indonesia. Practically, it implies the need to strengthen the vocational music curriculum to emphasize not only musical skills but also professional networking, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy to better prepare graduates for the competitive music industry.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of Generative AI and Text-to-Image Generators has introduced a paradigm shift in art production, challenging traditional notions of creativity and authorship. This study aims to examine the “artistic experience” of creators in the process of producing visual works using the Midjourney platform, specifically within the context of urban photography (portrait, street, and landscape). Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this research utilizes Terry Barrett’s theory of photography criticism as a methodological bridge to translate visual elements such as Subject, Form, Medium, and Style into precise linguistic prompts. The findings reveal that while Midjourney can successfully reconstruct the “image logic” of a scene based on text, it introduces a significant “aesthetic deviation.” Comparative analysis shows that AI- generated images tend to be hyper-realistic, displaying “more mature” color tones and a cinematic polish that often removes the raw, authentic grit found in human-captured urban photography. Furthermore, the study identifies a “framing effect,” where direct comparison paradoxically heightens the appreciation for human creativity. The research concludes that the integration of AI into the creative process does not eliminate the artist but fundamentally shifts their role from a technical operator of visual machinery to a linguistic architect. In the urban creative ecosystem, this implies a new form of literacy where the ability to articulate visual concepts textually becomes as crucial as the ability to capture light, democratizing artistic creation for urban society while raising new questions about the ontology of authenticity.

Abstract

Banyuwangi is famous for its culture as proven by national and international awards. One of the components of culture is indigenous knowledge. The cultural elements of Banyuwangi have also been covered by television stations. TRANS7 created a program that raised the theme of Banyuwangi culture, for example Bocah Petualang. The program, which is known as Si Bolang, not only covered culture, but also practiced indigenous knowledge of Banyuwangi. This study aims to identify local knowledge of Banyuwangi represented by the Bocah Petualang television program. The results of the study show that the Banyuwangi community has local knowledge about traditional games (cars and river rafts), sources of animal protein (bibis, wader, and eel), cooking spices (kecombrang flower), healthy drinks (jamu cabe Jawa and wedang jahe susu), healthy food (watercress decoction and stir-fried durian flowers), livestock (freshwater fish and honey bees), plantations (ranti tomatoes and dragon fruit), handicrafts (bamboo weaving), and dance. The conclusion of this study is that the indigenous knowledge of Banyuwangi in the television program Bocah Petualang is about traditional games, high protein aquatic animals, the benefits of kecombrang, healthy beverages, healthy foods, animal husbandry, plantations, woven ethnomathematics, and motor stimuli in dance art. This study found that insects (spiders) can be used to eradicate pests. The results of this study can be a source of reference for studies about the nutrition of durian flowers. The results of this study can also be a source of inspiration for creative industry practitioners to innovate in creating contents based on local knowledge.

Abstract

In this research, the representation of suicide in modern Javanese theatre is analyzed as a symbol of resistance against repressive power, with an emphasis on the altruistic values typical of Javanese culture. Two theatre scripts, KUP (Sego Gurih Theatre Company) and Dumeh (Sedhut Senut Theatre Company), are the focus of this study because they feature main characters who choose suicide. A hermeneutic approach within an interpretive framework and content analysis of the texts have been used. This method finds that suicide in both texts is not meant as a personal act of despair, but rather as a political and spiritual statement grounded in the ethics of self-sacrifice in Javanese cosmology. In this context, harmony, obedience, and self-control assume a resistance-oriented connotation. Modern Javanese-language theatre, therefore, is positioned as a space for emancipatory social critique. Thus, suicide is understood not merely as a tragic act, but as a dramatic and political strategy used to uphold justice and restore collective dignity. This research contributes to studying Javanese culture and theatrical practice as a medium for contemplating the relationship between the body, power, and spirituality.

Abstract

In the evolution of contemporary art, drawings and/or paintings remains a resilient medium yet continues to exhibit increasingly diverse visual expressions. Postmodern paintings frequently explore styles through eclectic elements and still predominantly utilize traditional techniques involving colored paint on flat surfaces as an artistic powerful paradigmatic medium. The author was interested to investigate and study further in research, as well as to innovate practically by utilizing the concept of appropriation as a stylization pattern to create images over existing images (overlay drawings). This approach consisted of several methods used include the stages of exploration, improvisation, and implementation; starting with visual comparison, experimentation with drawing media, and the application of the eclecticism of the painting by utilizing a plane material with a cross-section of the image/pattern as a medium of two-dimensional artwork (painting). As contemporary works of art often seeks to present uniqueness that triggers reflection, this research-creation aims to explore and expand the possibilities of using different— if not new—painting media while still maintaining the dimensional aspects of its flat surface. The findings of this research are an alternative offer to trigger innovation in different works of art, presenting a shift in conventional views that stimulate discussion of the novelty of fine art, while also being useful in providing an overview of the essence of postmodernism that reflects the complexity of contemporary art through elaboration of conventional painting ‘standards’. Ultimately, this creation yields a distinctive alternative painting work due to its eclectic visual mix. The implication is the expanding possibilities of using media and creative patterns in creating a painting, which is not merely limited to a plain surface, but alternatively responds to the surface of a pictorial medium by adding images to it using conventional painting techniques.
