Reading the Bible through a postcolonial lens has become today’s trend in biblical hermeneutics. It triggers pros and cons within the evangelical circle. Is it friend or foe? Rather than uncritically accepting or refusing it, the article chooses a middle way, being “open but cautious” toward it. The article assumes that every reading method has its strengths and weaknesses and, thus, it can offer valuable things. Applying the content analysis theory, the author finds that a postcolonial biblical reading is somehow relevant to a contextual and transformative biblical reading, regardless of its multiple problems. It enables the readers to be self-critical, context-sensitive, and practical in faith-life integration. The article concludes that postcolonial reading of the Bible can be both (evangelical) friend and foe.

This article is a historical study of alternative contextual evangelism models to Intau(means“person”)Bolaang Mongondow, which is communally called tribe or society (ethnic group/people group) Bolaang Mongondow. This study uses a literature review approach. It begins with researching the religion and beliefs of Intau Bolaang Mongondow. Then proceed with the socio-cultural phenomena of Intau Bolaang Mongondow, namely the dynamics of acculturation, openness to external influences, public attitudes towards change, and its essential element to determine alternative contextual evangelistic approaches. This study's final results show that attention to culture in developing a contextual evangelistic approach does not mean that the church must conform fully or assume harmony between the Gospel and culture. It is precisely by understanding and utilizing culture in the preaching of the contextual Gospel that it will be seen that Christian values have an advantage regarding the guarantee of eternal salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, efforts to prepare a contextual evangelist who has integrity, character, and competence regarding the Bible and culture are significant. Likewise, efforts to pioneer and develop contextual churches in the Intau Bolaang Mongondow environment must touch and empower those cultural values.

Habakkuk’s prophecy that the righteous will live by his belief (Hab. 2:4a) resonates in Paul’s letters, especially the text of Roma ns 1:17. This paper describes the authentic meaning of the term ‘believe’ in Habakkuk’s prophecy. Furthermore, this accurate meaning gets a more specific articulation in Paul’s idea of faith. This paper uses the Historical-Critical method and analyzes the text of Habakkuk 2:4b and the text of Rome 1:17. The correlation between these two texts comes to formulate the faith of the righteous in Christianity, namely credibility, justice, firmness, and faithfulness in carrying out the truth based on love, credibility, justice, firmness, and loyalty to fulfil God’s will.

This research was motivated by concerns about the problem of modern slavery. The author will interpret Exodus 20:8-11 on the Sabbath to respond to the issue of slavery. The method of interpretation that will be used is deconstruction and social criticism. The use of the social criticism method sees the text as a practice of discourse that is ideologically charged and has specific interests. The text is not neutral but rather is advocating. In the text itself, two social groups conflict with each other. The interpretation of the existing Sabbath is interpreted normatively, legalistically, ritualistically, sociologically, theologically and eschatologically. The results of reinterpreting the Sabbath using a deconstructive method show that the Sabbath has been abolished because every day is interpreted as a forced workday. Forced labour is driven by fear and worry. The Sabbath was forgotten for political and economic motives. The Sabbath was abolished because time was money, so people were traded and enslaved for the sake of making money. The reinterpretation of the Sabbath text with the method of social criticism finds the theological meaning of the Sabbath. The God of the Sabbath is described as the forerunner of the liberation of slavery throughout the ages. God’s Sabbath-keeping people today have a liberation mission to help people who are victims of modern slavery.

This article attempts to analyze the important role of God-fearers in informing the early Christian identity. Luke and Acts use an ethnic-reasoning to define the Christian community. Luke and Acts uses the words gentiles, unbeliever and other ethnic groups, such as Romans and Greeks, to describe outsiders. When outsiders join the Christian community, they need a new identity that contrasts with their former. This study employs ethnicity theory to understand how people from different groups accept each other while negotiating their differences, such as their cultures, beliefs, and social relationships. The conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch and Cornelius in Acts 8-10 demonstrates how the early Christians began to develop a fluid identity. Meaning some exceptions may be allowed for Gentiles to retain their practices and customs while at the same time becoming a member of the Christian community. In this new group, God-fearers find a sense of solidarity and belonging as they enter into a table fellowship in the name of Jesus Christ, showing the uniqueness of the Christian identity.
