Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a zoonotic viral disease which causes encephalitis in children (5-9 years old) . The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. The presence of JE virus, vector and reservoir host in Indonesia, will increase the concern of the possibility of JE outbreak in Indonesia. JE infection in human was reported by clinical and serological findings. Recently, JE case in Bali was declared as hyperendemic (usually sporadic) . In animals, JE infection has been confirmed by serology and viral isolation, while JE vector had been found in different species of mosquitoes by successful viral isolation from those mosquitoes. The prevention and control of JE are conducted by socialization about JE to the society, by cutting the JE transmission cycle (virus, vector and host), including pig farm relocation . The development of regional laboratories (facilities and human resources) to diagnose JE and the establishment BSL of 3 laboratory in the central laboratory institute to isolate the JE virus and to conduct further JE research on the role of animal in transmitting JE to human, must be conducted . The constraint of cattle development in Indonesia is low productivity, which was caused by low reproduction efficiency. Unestroes and difficulty of heat detection influenced to the calving interval. This calving interval is one of the causal factors of low reproduction efficiency. The efforts to solve this problem are to control and to predict heat period using synchronization technology. Synchronization technology on catlle has been developed from corpus luteum enucleated, utilizing of gonadotropin, progesteron, estrogen, prostaglandine and modification of those hormones. Application method for synchronization could be done by intra musculair, subcutan implantation, intra vaginal and mixed with food. Each method has its own strength and weaknesses. However, to handle anestroes cases is more effective to use combination of progesteron, PGF2α and estrogen. In order to obtain reproduction efficiency it is suggested to take the anestroes in hand as soon as possible. Key words : Cattle, synchronization estrous

Broiler chicken has high fat content, especially abdominal and subcutan fat which reduced carcass quality and efficiency of feed energy. Genetic approach could be potentially applied to reduce high abdominal and intramuscular fat in broiler chicken through the selection program at gene level related to fat metabolism. This paper describes the metabolism and biosynthesis of body fat and the role of its controlled genes. Fat synthesis is controlled by feed quality and metabolism and biosynthesis process occurred in liver. These processes are controlled by many family genes, but certain genes have dominant role in the process; those are triglyceride lipase genes, fatty acid synthase genes and fatty acid binding protein genes. Expression of fatty acid synthase genes has positive correlation with fat content in liver and intramuscular. Expression of fatty acid binding protein genes was related to the increased abdominal fat deposit. These genes are polymorphic, so that they can be used as a genetic marker in selection to optimize feed efficiency, to minimize abdominal fat and to increase economic value of broiler chicken. Key words: Fat, triglyceride lipase genes, fatty acid synthase genes, fatty acid binding protein genes

Development of local chicken production based on local feed ingredient is in line with the vision of Indonesian goverment to fulfill meat and egg national requirement based on local resources. There are two big problem which become stumblingblock in developing local chicken production. The first problem is the difficulty to get day old chick of local chicken. This problem can be solved by integrating breeder institutions belong to goverment with research institution and with local chicken producer association. The second problem is the low performance of local chicken. To improve local chicken performance, it can be done by improving the breed, feed and management. Several research results show that good performance of local chicken were obtained by inclusion of local feed ingredients in the ration. Therefore, development of local chicken production based an local feed resources can be applied. Key words: Development, local chicken, local resources

Fulfillment of animal protein in Indonesia, come from animal products including fish i.e. meat, milk and egg. In the early of 1900 period beef cattle was a major product contributing to animal protein consumption but in the current decade poultry products come to replace it. Reformation in breeding strategy and its combination with feed conversion can enhance production efficiency and product number, maintain the continuity and the quality of products. These factors have not been included in a breeding plan for beef cattle, yet. The only appropriate breeding program is in Bali cattle that have not introduced feed intake and conversion into the planning. The ideal breeding program is to produce elite breeding stock and high quality of final stock from crossbreds that is labeled as a quality standard of the animal including recognized feed conversion and daily gain weight. Until recently, cattle meat is believed as a dominant source of red meat that fulfills the market demands of Indonesia’s consumers. Meat demands tend to increase in the future caused by the increase income of human beings. As a consequence, the population of cattle tends to decrease and their role as meat producer should be in part or fully overcome and substituted by other ruminant livestock. Buffalo is one of the native ruminant livestock breeds of Indonesia that nutritionally and physiologically is not so different from cattle. This animal may be suitable and affordable to enhance the meat production. However, the present progress of buffalo population is not as good as cattle. This may be to some extent, related to the governmental policy that never lists it for a long time, as a high priority program in livestock development. Beside this constraint, buffalo has some strength to be optimized by improving its genetic potentiality and environmental related aspects. This paper deals with the effort of improving the nutrition and feed availability of buffalo with special focus on the applied feed technology. In the future, this approach will hopefully accelerate the buffalo population rate. Key words: Buffalo, feed technology, forage, red meat, milk, nutrition, livestock farming

Mastitis in Ettawa crossbred goat is commonly found and caused economic loss. Staphylococcus aureus is one of bacteria caused clinical mastitis or subclinical mastitis in Ettawa crossbred goat. The aim of this review was to provide an overview of clinical and subclinical mastitis in the Ettawa crossbred goat caused by S. aureus from epidemiological aspect, clinical symptoms, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control. Mastitis should be eliminated because it lead to death for the goats and lambs. In addition, S. aureus has greater risk for contamination in milk because it produces heat-stable toxin. Isolation and identification bacteria with total of somatic cell counts are important as a reference to determine the actions to decrease the occurrence of mastitis. Some preventive measures for mastitis include clean milking, dipping the teats with a disinfectant and antibiotic treatment during dry lactation. Key words: Ettawa crossbred goat, mastitis, S. aureus, diagnosis, preventif

Decreasing areas of fertile soil in Java due to non agriculture purposes and increasing demand for agriculture products along with increasing human population and industrial growth have led to cultivate marginals soils like tidal swamp land areas to the development of agriculture. Integrated farming system concepts involving food crops such as rice and corn with cattle or buffaloes could be applied in tidal swamp land areas of South Sumatera. They were supported by appropriate carrying capacity and planting pattern, and sufficient supply of rice and corn straws as feed. However, infrastructural constraints, such as isolated location, and inappropriate facilities, especially by transportation were found. An integration of crop and livestock that is supported by transportation through rivers connect to markets is recommended. If such effort is sucsessful, it will increase crop production and ruminant productivity, significantly. Key words: Tidal swamp land, carrying capacity, planting pattern, agricultural by productcs

Timor deer (Rusa timorensis) is a newly domesticated animal in Indonesia and other countries in the world. It is a potential source of meat and livelihood. Low birth rate is a problem of deer farming in Indonesia. It happens because of low concern for key aspects of behaviors including reproductive behavior. The aim of this review is to give information about reproductive behavior of Timor deer in natural habitat and captivity breeding. Libido and estrous behaviors of Timor deer in captivity breeding were similar with natural habitat. However, male Timor deer in captivity breeding took longer time to approach the females before mating, compared with those in their natural habitat. Aggressive behavior commonly leads mating. Parturition and maternal behavior of hinds are affected by limitation of space, therefore dividing the area of cage which depends on age and physiological status is needed to improve reproductive management. Key words: Reproductive behavior, captivity, Timor deer

Cauda epididymal sperm could be used as an alternative of male gamete source for application in reproductive technology, because the sperm is motile and has ability for fertilizing oocyte. This sperm could be collected from life or death animal, then it might be processed for chilling or freezing. Epididymis from death animal could also be preserved at 5°C for several days before collecting and processing. Cauda epididymal sperm which has motility more than 40% can be applied for artificial insemination (AI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) programs. Key words: Cauda epididymal spermatozoa, Al, IVF
