Abstract

This research focuses on the critique of modernism as an effort to preserve the ocean in Okky Madasari’s Mata dan Manusia Laut (Mata and the Sea Man). Modernism, which is considered the pinnacle of human civilization, is actually depicted in this novel as exploiting the sea. The purpose of this study is to reveal how sea preservation efforts in children’s novels are presented through issues of contradiction with modernism. By using a descriptive qualitative method  based on Todorrov’s structuralism perspective, especially regarding point of view, the results of this study are that there is a binary opposition between the lives of the land people who are advanced in civilization and the sea people who are considered primitive, giving rise to a hierarchical relationship between subject and object. However, the Bajo tribe which maintains their local beliefs actually shows behavior in protecting and caring for the sea, in contrast to modernists who use technology to exploit the exoticism of the sea. Thus, it can be concluded that this novel contains character education values regarding: (1) the mindset of modernism must be positioned in balance with the values of local wisdom of the Indonesian people, (2) local beliefs that are considered irrational are actually capable of maintaining sea preservation.

Abstract

The Donggala woven fabric is characterized by a wide range of motif designs that are influenced by the community’s depictions of their own identity and the environment, including both nature and culture. This influence is evident in the designs’ substance, which showcases a fusion of the Kaili community’s culture and natural beauty in Central Sulawesi. The objective of this study is to comprehend the philosophical principles that are reflected in the motif designs of Donggala woven fabric and to offer a comprehensive account of the evolution of human thought within the culture that supports it. This study implemented a philosophical method that is supplemented by a historical method. Hermeneutics and van Peursen’s cultural philosophy are employed as the philosophical analysis method. The results indicate that the meanings embedded in the motif designs of Donggala woven fabric are representative of the evolution of the Kaili ethnic community’s perspective on themselves, others, the universe, and the dimension of religiosity. The motif patterns of Donggala woven fabric are designed from this perspective. The characteristics of Donggala woven fabric motif designs are influenced by mythical, ontological, and functional modes of thought from a philosophical perspective. Donggala woven fabric is distinguished by its consistent use of the fundamental motif of buya bomba or floral patterns. A diversity of decorative patterns that have been preserved to this day are represented by this fundamental motif. It demonstrates that the Kaili community is consistently focused on the natural environment as the foundation of their thought and behavior, which is reflected in the ecological characteristics of the Donggala woven fabric motif designs.

Abstract

This study aims to examine objects as symbols in Opal (2020). It is one of the animations that applied inanimate objects as symbols to support its theme. This animation delves into the theme of child neglect inside of a dysfunctional family and it uses cigarettes, mirrors, and pills as symbols to deliver the theme. To understand this utilization of symbols, Saussure’s semiotics theory signifier and signified is applied. By employing the semiotics theory, researchers found out that those objects are signifiers that signified ignorant, narcissistic, and abusive human behavior. Cigarettes symbolizes the  ignorant  grandfather  who is  an  active  smoker  despite  of  his health problem; mirrors symbolize the narcissistic father who is excessively obsessed with himself regardless of the harmful things he has done; pills symbolize the abusive mother who abuses her drug use just like how she abuses her daughter for her own pleasure. Therefore, this animation successfully applied objects as symbols that symbolize human behavior to support the theme of child neglect and give the impression how such harmless things can lead to bigger problems that cause harm to ourselves and others.

Abstract

Women in the past are reconstructed by both male and female authors into positioned subjects. The transformation of women from object to subject is recorded in two Javanese novels of the Reformation era that become the material object of this research, namely Kidung Tresna Sang Pikatan and Prau Layar Ing Kali Code. Aspects of women’s subjectivation in these Javanese novels are identified, categorized and analyzed by applying the concept of gender, which views the resistance of female characters in literary works as an effort  to negotiate how  women  should be positioned. In both novels, the analysis will focus on two characters, Wulan in Kidung Tresna Sang Pikatan and Gandawati in Prau Layar Ing Kali Code. Both characters are characterized by their dominance over me. To see this phenomenon, the author tries to apply Haraway’s view of critical feminism and the concept of cyborg. The research proves that women have an important role in both narratives built by the author in the transformative novel that is sourced from historical stories and pre-existing myths.

Abstract

This article examines recognition of the self in symbolic interactionism, and how con-sciousness can apprehend distortions in self-concept, particularly after the social re-strictions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through a literature review, a critical analy-sis method is carried out using a social epistemology approach to symbolic interaction-ism theory in social encounters with significant individuals and strangers, through un-derstanding the meaning derived from a number of intersubjectivities. Symbolic in-teractionism theory develops in various situations and levels of self-understanding, ranging from Herbert Mead’s the self to Erving Goffman’s concept of dramaturgy. These theories then provide an approach to how individuals in small-scale social struc-tures seek to be accepted within larger constructs. In line with this, the study aims to explain the capabilities of the self in society, which according to Axel Honneth will be influenced by the specific social group chosen, and the rules for engaging in it as an individual to play a role and be recognized for their achievements. The results of the study show how consciousness of concept of the self in symbolic interactionism can first find deep intersubjectivity and true meaning to be able to avoid distortions on a comprehensive path towards real self-recognition.

Abstract

This writing explores the records of the Resident of Kediri in 1919, as documented in the Memori van Overgave of Resident H. Altmann. He observed several irregularities in the water   channels, particularly in the Brantas River. In this memorandum, a report was submitted to the East Java Office concerning the management of Brantas River irrigation, which was coordinated by the Irrigatie Afdeling Brantas (IAB). The IAB was headquartered in Mojokerto and had a representative office in Pare, Kediri. In his presentation, the Resident of Kediri expressed significant frustration with the irrigation system of the Brantas River. This was due to the large amount of sand entering the river from mountainous areas. Additionally, there was growing concern that poor maintenance of the Brantas River’s flow could disrupt waterway transportation, which served as a key economic route connecting downstream regions. The excessive sand in the river could lead to sedimentation causing the riverbed to become shallow. As a result, during his tenure, Hendrik Altmann frequently complained about the poor state of the water channels, considering the Brantas River’s crucial role as a trade route. On the other hand, inadequate management of the river hindered economic activities in the Kediri region. Analyzing this memorandum reveals that environmental issues in the Kediri Residency were extensive—not only the eruption of Mount Kelud but also its aftermath. The volcanic materials deposited in the river led to sedimentation, which subsequently caused flooding, especially in the Kediri Residency area.
