Abstract

This study delves into how women's choices are represented through a sexual abuse survivor character in Colleen Hoover's novel Hopeless. The novel addresses the issue of women's choices, depicted by two main female characters who have experienced sexual abuse by their family members. This research uses representation theory and a postfeminist perspective to analyze this portrayal of women's choices. This research identifies three choice categories for sexual abuse survivors striving for happiness: 1) women decide what they want, 2) women dare to take risks, and 3) women choose to self-acceptance. The two main female characters in Hopeless are portrayed as courageous individuals who dare to break away from the victim label by making bold and meaningful choices.

Abstract

Environmental crisis has become a current issue for literary researches globally including in Indonesia. 'Mencari Ujung Pelangi' through an ecocritical approach, is providing a nuanced backdrop against which to explore the intricate dynamics of natural resource exploitation within literary contexts. This study is using eco-crititicism lens since it focuses on the relationship between literature and the environment. For the purpose of this study, the questions formulated were 1) How does "Mencari Ujung Pelangi" represent nature and environmental issues, and what critique does it offer against anthropocentric attitudes? 2) In what ways does the story promote environmental advocacy and consciousness, and how does it align with the ecocritical goals of fostering ecological awareness? Through the protagonist Alfi's eyes, we witness the impact of deforestation and industrialization”the factory replacing the forest”and the subsequent pollution of the nearby lake. The story critiques anthropocentrism”the human-centric view that prioritizes economic interests over ecological well-being”by highlighting the negative consequences of such attitudes.

Abstract

Set in Victorian to Edwardian England, the novel features a character with a homosexual identity, prompting this research on the character's non-conformity to heteronormative standards. This article aims to analyze the form of ideological control that emerges as the heteronormative norm in the novel Maurice through the perspective of class-consciousness Marxist, using Eagleton’s Ideology theory. Ideological theory through Marxist concepts, reveals context-based analysis of how economic structures shape ideology and social change. This article uses a descriptive-qualitative method with a mimetic approach, which describes the data collected through narration and dialogue from the novel. The findings categorize heteronormative norms as ideological control into three types: those stemming from religious dogma, the hegemony of masculinity in public schools, and the discourse on sexuality. Maurice explained the causal relationship between class position in the social strata and dominant norms, impacting the characters' lives.

Abstract

Cigarette advertisements are products that have restrictions and regulations in their promotion. With that, cigarette advertisements utilize creativity that has connotations to avoid bans that could lead to controversy. Through Roland Barthes' semiotic theory regarding the meanings of denotation and connotation, as well as myths, the connotations found in cigarette advertisements become a complex and interesting topic to discuss. By using a descriptive qualitative research method through the collection of primary and secondary data via observation and documentation. The results of the analysis through denotation, connotation, and myth are as follows: first, the denotation in advertisements in the form of illustrated images is a literal description that does not require deeper interpretation, while the connotation in advertisements in the form of illustrated images and text represents a secondary meaning that goes beyond denotation, which requires deeper interpretation. Second, the myth in advertisements that consist of illustrations and text is the result of a combination of meanings from the two associative terms, namely denotation and connotation, which are then agreed upon and believed.

Abstract

PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder is a serious mental condition that some people develop after a shocking, terrifying, or dangerous event which are mostly known as traumas. After a trauma, it is common to struggle with fear, anxiety, and sadness. Most people get better with time, but PTSD thoughts and feelings do not fade away completely. In the novels The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999) by Stephen Chbosky and Norwegian Wood (1987) by Haruki Murakami the characters Charlie and Naoko respectively, are observed to go through traumas due to childhood memories, complicated sexual relationships, and death of dear ones. Their post PTSD period has taken place in certain conditions which gave somewhat different endings to their stories denoting different components of personality as per the representation of Sigmund Freud’s theory of personality. According to Freud, id works on pleasure principle, super ego on the moral side and ego balances both id and superego of human psychology. This study is an exploration of Charlie and Naoko’s PTSD and their relationships throughout their lifetime to bring out the comparative personality of the characters in their post PTSD period though the theory of Freud.  The paper has been carried out through qualitative research of close textual analysis and comparative and contrastive methods of study.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the theme of intersectional in poetry written during three important periods: the Jim Crow Era, Harlem Renaissance, and Contemporary Era. Using close reading, this research explores how racism, sexism, and social class are intertwined and reflected in the works of poets, particularly women of color. The analysis is conducted by paying attention to the use of diction, symbolism, and poetic structure, as well as the social and historical context in which the poems were written. The results show that intersectional is a central element that shapes the experience of oppression in poetry from each era. In the Jim Crow Era, poets express racial and gender violence through strong and straightforward language, emphasizing the brutal reality of segregation and misogyny. In the Harlem Renaissance, there is an attempt to celebrate cultural identity while still considering the complexities of gendered oppression, with poets combining pride in Black identity with critiques of patriarchy. In the Contemporary Era, the complexities of intersectional identities are increasingly explored, reflecting the challenges faced by women of color in modern society, including issues of sexuality, queerness, and class dynamics. This research confirms that despite advances in social awareness, issues of racism and gender oppression remain enduring legacies, with poetry serving as both a reflection of these struggles and a form of resistance against them. Through this exploration, the study underscores the vital role of intersectional feminism in understanding the evolving experiences of African American women across time.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to uncover the cultural phases of the Aryojeding site in Rejotangan, Tulungagung, through the lens of Van Perseun's cultural theory. There are two nearby relics at the site: the tomb of Ki Ageng Sengguruh and the Aryojeding temple or shrine. The research method employed is qualitative-descriptive.The findings reveal mystical elements, evident in myths and food-related artifacts. Ontological studies highlight traditions such as pilgrimage and the slametan ritual during the Satu Suro (Javanese New Year). From a functional perspective, the community regards this tomb as both a historical source and a cultural heritage asset worth preserving, leading to its designation as a "site" that is part of a protected cultural reserve. Additionally, the site has a caretaker (juru kunci), reinforcing its functional phase as an educational medium.

Abstract

The Wayang Topeng Malang performance titled Dhalang Patah Kuda Narawangsa is one of the unique plays staged by Padepokan Asmarabangun, alongside Ronggeng Rara Jiwa – Rara Tangis. This play presents peculiarities surrounding gender fluidity, which influence the power relations among characters through the dialogues delivered. To further explore this notion, this study employs Connell’s theory of gender hegemony as the primary analytical tool, and Peirce’s semiotics theory as a supporting framework to examine the language used through discourse analysis. In doing so, it contributes to the field of Linguistic Anthropology. This study aims to document the Wayang Topeng Malangan performance and investigate the systems and forms of power embedded within it through linguistic practices. The research shows that the language used constructs a system of masculine power when interacting with characters that present as either masculine or feminine. This practice creates hegemony by rejecting heterogeneous expressions of masculinity and their constitutive elements. Thus, gendered power emerges through linguistic choices—particularly those that convey emotional detachment and aggressiveness. Gendered power relations in the form of hegemony are present in both private spaces, such as the household, and public spaces, such as governance. The more frequent the enactment of power in these spaces, the greater the scale of masculinity that is produced.
